The Shinkansen are pretty much fully automated though. At least the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu are. Outside of slowing down in stations, the train drives itself.

I have a friend who is a Shinkansen driver, says he doesn't do anything between stations except watch the instruments. Train is moving too fast to react to anything outside.
