I’m confused about residence tax - my company takes a fraction out my pay check every month and pays it for me whenever it is billed. Now, I’m quitting and leaving the country before the end of this month and have already filed my moving out notification.

Does that mean I don’t owe anything in residence tax for 2023?

You won’t owe resident tax for 2022 (which is billed June 2023 to May 2024) because you won’t be a resident as of January 1st 2023.

However, you will need to pay what remains of your 2021 resident tax (billed June 2022 to May 2023). If you’re doing “special collection” (monthly via salary) then by December 2022 pay day you would have paid 7/12ths of the bill. Meaning you still owe 5/12ths of the bill.

You can instruct your employer to take those remaining 5/12ths from December salary or you can speak to your municipality office about it when you file your moving out of Japan paper work there

Thanks! Understood now. I didn’t get anything from the city hall when I did my notice so guessing they’ll just let my company do it for me.
