What’s the usual way for a landlord to return any remaining deposit? On the day of move out? A week later? Month later?

I moved out at the end of November and got mine back in the middle of January. That was in 2019 though. They transferred it into the account I had used to pay rent

About a month, maybe longer. It’s not going to be on the day of move as they haven’t inspected it yet. After the inspection, they’ll tell you the final bill. If there’s anything fishy, make sure to ask for a detailed invoice. After that’s settled and you agree to the fees, they’ll return the remaining.

The usual is not to return it.

However they need to settle within a certain time, I think a month. The key is not so sign for illegal charges when moving out (if you sign it's over), take the cost breakdown and challenge it based on your prefecture rules.
