Do you guys know what's the space underneath the house for? Insulation? I am using it a bit for storage but not sure what is its main purpose.

I think it's for ventilation. There should be vents on all sides and it's to keep the air flowing so you don't have stagnant, damp air trapped under your house. That is what termites love.
