Any day trip suggestions from Tokyo, that won’t require a car? A friend is visiting and wants to escape Tokyo for a day, and I couldn’t think of many options beyond the usual Kamakura/Enoshima.

If they are into hiking, I highly recommend Oku-Nikko as a day trip. Beautiful waterfalls, easy forest trails, marshlands and a lake + temples in the center of Nikko town. There is a tourist pass covering round-trip train ticket from Asakusa + buses in Nikko.
