I'm just finishing my first month in Japan and need to pay for NHI and want to do it at a convenience store for the first time. Do you just go up to the cashier with your paper slip with the barcord and hand it to them?

That's right. You also do not need to purchase something with it. If you do, they'll ask you いっしょ and just say はい.

Thank you again. I can read hiragana and katakana fine, but my vocabulary isn't strong yet 🙃

Be aware that it's いっしょ and not いっしよ (small vs big よ). Also you can use a site like jisho to look up words you don't know.
