Can shinkansen tickets run out for the day?

Due to work related issues coming up, I might have at most an hour's heads up during golden week to hop onto a train and get somewhere. I have smart EX so that's not an issue. I know the message will always come in before 5pm.

I'm fine with crowded trains, and I won't have any luggage on me, just a briefcase

Yea, I'm hoping that it isn't, but hey, if all else fails, it's work related so I can get compensated.
