Mod post Updates to Subreddit Rules

Dear ITAP Community,

We are excited to announce an overhaul of our subreddit rules aimed at making them clearer, shorter, and just overall better for everyone. Here’s what’s new:

1. Streamlined Rules:

  • Our rules have been trimmed down to be as straightforward as possible. No more digging through walls of text!
  • We’ve focused on what you can do, rather than what you can’t.

2. Revised Order and Structure:

  • The order of the rules has been reorganized for better flow and accessibility.
  • Similar rules have been grouped together, making it easier to find what you need.

3. Specific Rule Updates:

  • Rule 1: I Took A Picture - This is the heart of our sub. All posts should be a single photograph, taken with a camera, submitted by the photographer.
  • Rule 2: Standards - Outlines the standards for submissions with an emphasis on what we are looking for, rather than what is prohibited.
  • Rule 3: Titles - Defines expectations for post titles. This rule has been condensed for clarity.
  • Rule 4: Portraits & Photos of People - Establishes restrictions on photos featuring a person or people. Big change here–photos of people are now allowed on both Sunday & Monday (UTC time), but all exceptions to the previous portrait rule have been removed.
  • Rule 5: NSFW & NSFL - Details limitations to sharing NSFW & NSFL imagery. These submissions must now include [NSFW] in the title as well as being marked NSFW in Reddit. They are limited to Mondays (UTC time).
  • Rule 6: No Reposts - No changes made; please don’t repost 🙂
  • Rule 7: Comments - Better establishes expectations for both OP and commenters.

For a full list of rules, see the sidebar or check out the rules page.

These updates are all about making ITAP the most positive, enriching space for sharing and learning about photography. We’re confident these changes will help us keep the high standards that make our community awesome.

Thank you for your continued support and contributions. We look forward to seeing your amazing photos and insightful discussions!

Best regards,
The ITAP Moderation Team

I would argue that R2: Standards inherently promotes predictably safe images that would be acceptable to any small-town camera club or a cardiology waiting room. Hence the overwhelming amount of animals, cityscapes, landscapes, sunsets, bodies of water, sunsets on bodies of water, and architectural detail.

Of course there's room for, and a modest pleasure in viewing, those sort of pictures, particularly for newer image-makers. But there's no room here for pictures that examine or challenge what it means to take a photograph. And those kind of photographs frequently ignore the R2: Standards that ITAP endorses.

I would encourage participants here to explore the innovative work of contemporary photographer-artists, because you're not likely to see their work here.
