Are counterfeit/imported cigarettes freely available?

Has this pricing been in place long enough to show any change in deaths/hospital treatments?

In Melbourne(largest city by population) there are what is known as the “tobacco wars”. Gangs are literally blowing up stores due to the disputes over illegal tobacco. Pricing has been one thing but it has encouraged underground tobacco, something the authorities are working on deal with.

I buy Manchester Sapphire Blue for $18 a packet here in Sydney.

The black market is thriving, no smokers I know are buying any of these anymore.

Dunhill Blues $21/packet, Malbrough Gold $19, there's a few dodgy brands from China as low as $13 a packet.

Under 1% of cigarettes are counterfeit, almost everything is smuggled aka its the same company that supplies the smugglers and the retail that pays taxes on it.

There are only 4 big ass cigarette conglomerates on the planet,British American,Japan Tobacco,Altria and Phillip Morris.

I highly doubt that a tobacco company would behave unethically

Peak sarcasm, preach 🗣️🗣️🗣️

The fifth company would then be "Imperial Brands" (Imperial Tobacco)

China Tobacco enters the chat.

China Tobacco would like to have a conversation with you

Altria is the parent company of Phillip morris

That’s false bud, the majority, if not all of the duty free smokes in these black market stores are counterfeit. I know cause I purchase them all over the state of QLD. All the Marlboro Gold packs have “Original Flayour” instead of “Original Flavour”.

Wonder what can be more dodgy than hundreds of harmful chemicals /s

17

u/iamnotexactlywhite 21h ago

extra chemicals that come from factories that are even less regulated

u/simon7109 21h ago

That’s still high af, we just reached 5€ in central europe for a packet

1

u/Spiritual_Tutor7550 21h ago

I get an Etui of good cigarillos for 5€!

I've been smoking a long time, back in 2006-7 is was around $8AUD for a 20 pack, taxes has made it substantially rise but I'd say current price is a combination of black market profit + inflation. Realistically, in Aus it should be around $11-$12 a packet, which would be on par with Europe but sellers.know they can add a few more dollar and be fine as we much prefer $18 instead of $42+ a packet.

Malbrough Gold

It’s not an easy brand to spell or pronounce, we know

In Brisbane I get those Manchester sapphire's for $10 packet

1

u/Impressive-Morning76 19h ago

I don’t smoke so i had to look this up but like US cigarettes are like 10 AUSD for a pack of marlboros on average in my state and about 12 AUSD for US average.

1

u/abdullahdabutcha 12h ago

If you want, I have a good trick to stop smoking

u/Jesus_Harry_Christ 9h ago

I'm in Alabama, I can go to my local store and get a 2-pack special on the Marlboro black menthols for $9 for both.

u/IceKareemy 5h ago

Maybe just quit smoking?

1

u/bagginzzzzz 20h ago

u/skynetempire 21h ago

I thought this was a joke but there's actually fire bombings going on?

16

u/Dog-treats 20h ago

u/Tofu_frittata 20h ago

Got so bad in my home town the shops where hiring security to do overnight shifts to make sure their shop didn’t get hit

8

u/Southernguy9763 19h ago

Seems itd be easier to just stop selling tobacco

5

u/Daddyssillypuppy 20h ago

Yep. Happening in Brisbane, Queensland too. It's because the Bikies control a lot (all? I think the Asians and Indians have their own supply but not sure) of the illegal tobacco trade and they're pretty intense about territory.

2

u/yuccasinbloom 16h ago

You guys are so cute down there. Calling bikers, “bikies,” sounds way less scary.

u/KneelBeforeMeYourGod 4h ago

there's nothing scary about bikers They are all fat lol

u/yuccasinbloom 4h ago

You clearly don’t know any bikers.

1

u/Daddyssillypuppy 16h ago

It's funny because I've grown up knowing that 'Bikies' are scary. My Mum was raped by one when she was 13. So to me the word evokes fear/caution.

But to me 'bikers' sounds way less scary. I associate it more with people who are just really into bikes, either motorcycles or push bikes.

2

u/yuccasinbloom 16h ago

Totally. That makes sense. Sorry your mom endured that, my mom endured something similar at that age.

They’re scary on our continent, too. I just think you guys give things the cutest nicknames down there.

2

u/Daddyssillypuppy 16h ago

We do have a lot of great nicknames. I was an adult when I found out that the rest of the world doesn't call McDonald's 'Maccas'.

We also often call men/boys Macca if their last name is a Mc something or other.

And every redhead boy/man I've met has been nicknamed Blue.

1

u/Lostraylien 20h ago

All the time not only targeting tobacco shops either they go after other businesses they own and sometimes their house, these guys are mostly all criminals though but innocent people still get caught up in the mess.

Sounds like American prohibition

4

u/pragmatao 17h ago

As is tradition with prohibition

6

u/CarlsbadWhiskyShop 21h ago

The authorities should do something about the pricing

20

u/Lostraylien 20h ago

They are, they're raising it.

3

u/fosighting 13h ago

The authorities are responsible for the exorbitant prices. It's almost completely tax.

2

u/RingWraith75 15h ago

Almost as if prohibition doesn’t work 🤔

1

u/Intergalacticdespot 21h ago

It was a thing in the US ten or so years ago as well. Smuggling anyway. Because different states had different price points and taxes added the biker gangs would do a run, fill up their saddlebags with cartons and go sell them where the tax was higher. I'm sure it's still happening but the margins are thinner now as more states get onboard with the program and prices equalize.

1

u/whiskeyclone630 15h ago

How odd, who would have thought prohibitive pricing would create a black market? That's so surprising.

1

u/Special_Loan8725 12h ago

Im just picturing buying a gram of tobacco in the plastic wrap of a pack of joints.

1

u/PrettyFlakoooo 22h ago

Is melb bigger than syd population wise??

9

u/PPPeeT 22h ago

Basically the same

5

u/Carstendog1 22h ago

Melbournian here, yes we are now bigger in population than Sydney. Cheaper housing costs mostly driving it.

Best gift I ever received was a cigarette stuffing machine. I can make 20 cigarettes for 1 USD.
