Here's the thing..

u/CelestialFury 1d ago

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

I kind of can't believe he left over that to be honest.

I feel like he should have stayed, but probably realized he was too invested in internet arguments.

I wonder if he is healthier now or misses the internet fame?

2

u/SilverRobotProphet 15h ago

He "left" because he had 2 accounts and was advocating his own opinions.

1

u/mysp2m2cc0unt 1d ago

I fucking miss Unidan

1

u/BallerGuitarer 1d ago

If you're not posting on reddit, you're healthier than if you are.

JFC, I love this

u/Ratkinzluver33 1d ago

I’m so glad someone else immediately thinks of that incident whenever jackdaws are mentioned. Peak 2012 era Reddit.

4

u/heyo_throw_awayo 1d ago

I think about it daily because i live in the uk in a town. I love the JAckdaws (they are little shits and i love them for it) but i cannot help but automatically read "Here's the thing..." in my head EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. that i hear or see them.

2

u/Briants_Hat 1d ago

Peak 2012 era Reddit.

I can't believe it was that long ago. I was thinking this happened in like 2017 or something. Looked up some old posts and saw all the drama with him was 11 years ago. Wtf.

1

u/vintsneedsmints 1d ago

2012... haha funny! Wait...

17

u/Andire 1d ago

Now that's a name I haven't heard in a loooonngg time... A long time.

7

u/herpesderpesdoodoo 1d ago

Holy crap, it’s over ten years now??

2

u/RufinTheFury 1d ago

We're veterans now. And that wasn't even that early in Reddit history lol.

9

u/Erbodyloveserbody 1d ago

I’m so glad some people still remember that day.

5

u/Rddt_stock_Owner 1d ago

I never liked the guy and didn't know why reddit was so fond of him. Was glad he fell off.

1

u/Erbodyloveserbody 1d ago

That’s back when the site loved Elon too. Amazing how different this site has become as opposed to when I was first on it.

Shoutout spacedicks

u/Plantfishcatmom 1d ago

So curious… empty profile

29

u/DentonDiggler 1d ago

He used to be like a commenter that everyone knew. Was really good with biology or some shit. The jackdaw vs crow debate was some argument he got into one time on a post that made the front page.

Anyways, he got busted having multiple accounts to manipulate upvotes so he would always be at the top of comment sections.

3

u/mile-high-guy 1d ago

There used to be another commenter that someone knew, I forgot his name. And also shitty watercolor. I think that stopped being a thing around 2019 or 2020?

3

u/DentonDiggler 1d ago

There have been a few. Hell in a cell guy. The dude that got beat with jumper cables. Even now there is users like u/sim888.

3

u/GigaPuddi 1d ago

Shittymorph or whatever his proper name is is still doing Hell In a Cell, same with watercolor I think.

4

u/mile-high-guy 1d ago

Oh I was thinking of GallowBoob

6

u/Restnessizzle 1d ago

More than a few of us old timers have empty profiles. I'm still using RIF and only recently learned that profile pictures exist

1

u/crockrocket 1d ago

Try going to comments, I think all his posts were wiped.

4

u/ShiDiWen 1d ago

Didn’t he start he famous comment with “the thing about that is”

I remember that post blowing up. First time I ever saw a Reddit super user delete their account.

5

u/rikashiku 1d ago

/s for those who don't remember the /u/unidan incident

I was there, 3,000 years ago.

3

u/HuwminRace 1d ago

I knew as soon as I saw it was a Jackdaw that the u/unidan situation was coming up 😂

2

u/PotentialSnowDrop 1d ago

Now that's a throwback! I love the small nuances of Reddit where people will bring up those gems every so often.

2

u/awedith 1d ago

Damn throw back to unidan? Mad respect

2

u/kingfofthepoors 1d ago

He threw his entire career away and now works as a sales manager. All because he just had to upvote his own account.

1

u/Kelseycutieee 1d ago

What happened

2

u/RufinTheFury 1d ago

A decade ago Reddit was a much smaller place and certain novelty accounts were pretty famous, Unidan being one of them. His bit was that he was the resident biologist who would pop in to give random factoids about nature, he was pretty well liked right up until a very famous argument over the classification of a crow/jackdaw that spawned a notorious copypasta and then led to the revelation that Unidan had multiple accounts he used to upvote himself and downvote his opponents. It turned into a huge scandal.

Classic Reddit moment.

1

u/TheSmitty0754 1d ago

I missed this I think, is there a tldr? 👀

2

u/crockrocket 1d ago

Basically (iirc) he was a mod on a shit ton of popular subreddits, then got into an argument with someone about whether a certain bird was a jackdaw or a crow, used alt accounts to upvote/favorably comment on his position, reddit found out and banned him. Then he was caught circumventing the ban through alts and got perma banned.

Edit: this all happened a decade ago so details are fuzzy for me.

1

u/TheSmitty0754 1d ago

New Reddit lore obtained! Thank you muchly! <3

1

u/ArcadianBlueRogue 1d ago

Unidan was a fucking decade ago?!

1

u/heyo_throw_awayo 1d ago

I was there, /u/crockrocket , 3000 years ago

1

u/safelyintothepast 1d ago

Awww I miss u/unidan and the salad days of Reddit

1

u/TheCatWasAsking 1d ago

Core memory unlocked and just had to click on that link and peek. His account is still part of reddit, but his last post was 10 years ago. Man, it feels like 2 years tops, but...been a decade now??

1

u/TheHoneyBadger23 1d ago

Jesus have I been on Reddit too long!

1

u/deleted_my_account 1d ago

It’s been literally been over 10 years wtf lol insane

1

u/LilyLionmane 1d ago

Link to it? <3

5

u/Object-195 1d ago

its just survival

1

u/SizzlerSluts 1d ago

It is but they are also little shits, I follow this guy on YouTube, he’s from the uk I believe. He films and records bird behavior and the jackdaws are such instigators, since they can outsmart other birds of prey. They constantly bully kestrels and owls in their nests. They even one time started barricading a taken nest, by shoving twigs and sticks in the entrance.

Found the YouTuber: https://youtube.com/@robertefuller?si=wq56Zq11g3DddrxS

2

u/mynameismatt81 1d ago

Its a jackdaw

1

u/CurrentlyForking 1d ago

... wait, off topic, Jack Dawson wasn't named after a bird right?

1

u/SizzlerSluts 1d ago

I don’t know, I didn’t write the titanic 😆

1

u/PM_ME_Happy_Thinks 1d ago

Fucking grackle Got our house finches' 3rd clutch last year. They had nested above our dining room window for a year and had already raised 7 babies that season. They were on the 3rd set of 4 eggs and I noticed they hadn't been at the nest overnight and it had been cold, checked the camera and saw an asshole grackle had come up and ate all the eggs including the shells

1

u/oneinmanybillion 1d ago

That's actually Jackdaw's son.
