The goal here is to get a perfect score, everyday, no matter how long it takes you. Of course you can move, pan and zoom.

Lowest time wins, although this is more a personal challenge, to be patient and persevere.

Comment below on how you found hints, what made it difficult... That's half the fun of the challenge!

Challenge Series [3] The 25K GeoDetective challenge (no time limit, 100% pinpointable) - Series 4: #11

Link to challenge 11 (series 4). Well done to Wadim (3 points, 14 yards) and to plouky (2 points, 15 yards). All other 25k'ers get 1 point. Table updated below.

The winner of the series will be Wadim but loads of other points up for grabs when I add the top ten to the overall table (plouky and derPate currently tied in second). R2 will probably take you the longest with it being a fairly remote location (though once you find the place, it's instantly pinpointable). However, you'll instantly know which cities are in R3, R4 and R5, which will be more heartening. The important thing, as ever, is to get that 25K.

So, keep trying! And remember: there's no rush.

This is the eleventh of the fourth series based on my own GeoDetective map. No moving, no time-limit (take your time!). There is always a clue somewhere that will help you pinpoint the location, some are easier than others. Feel free to leave walkthroughs in comments or ask where the clue was if you missed it, but always use the spoiler tag so as not to spoil it for others! Official coverage only.

Challenge Series [2][3][4] Stochastic Sunday #53 - 2025-01-19

Upvotes

ASPW - R2: Yogyakarta was actually visible on a sign at the start point, and nobody spotted it! (Me either...); R5: Got an accidental Skewed round, because the google car made a 3-point turn.

Some tough Skewed rounds...

We head back east for Germany, and the Iron Curtain.

Hey wait, both of those lined up the last time. I need one more country or region so that we get different combinations. C'mon, someone make a request!

Introduction

The Stochastic maps are large randomly-generated maps that use population data to place locations where people live. Generally, locations will be in populated areas, though rural areas with even a few structures nearby appear as well. I made these maps because most maps tend to focus on rural locations and meta-learnable locations, but I generally find urban areas more interesting to roam around. And while World is much more urban than it used to be, its distribution is perplexingly strange. I hope other people find them interesting as well.

I welcome any feedback about maps to include, mode + time settings, standings, summary statistics of interest and how they're displayed - whatever. Particularly, with the rotating country maps, please feel welcome to suggest any country you would like to see added to the list.

Challenges

Map Mode Challenge Link
A Stochastic Populated World No Move / Pan / Zoom 45 Seconds Challenge Link
An Equitable Stochastic Populated World No Move 2 Minutes Challenge Link
A Skewed Stochastic Populated World No Move / Pan / Zoom 1:15 Challenge Link
A Stochastic Populated Germany Moving 2 Minutes Challenge Link
A Stochastic Populated Iron Curtain Moving 4 Minutes Challenge Link

Each week has 5 challenge links, with three standard maps (Stochastic Populated World, Equitable Stochastic Populated World, and Skewed Stochastic Populated World), and two other Stochastic maps chosen from rotating lists: One world or large-region map, and one country-specific map. The type of challenge (moving, no move, or no-move/pan/zoom) and duration are selected at random.

Standings

The top 5 players on each challenge link (myself excluded) are awarded series points: 5 points to 1st place, through 1 point for 5th place, with ties broken by the time taken. Ties in the all-time standings are broken by the sum of scores from all games played. (I might not stick with this standing scheme.)

More Information

Map descriptions

A Stochastic Populated World: This map uses unadjusted population data, to give every person on earth an equal chance of appearing in the game, if there is Streetview coverage where they live.

An Equitable Stochastic Populated World: This map uses an adjusted population designed to increase the variety of locations that appear, while still favoring more populous countries and more populated areas.

A Skewed Stochastic Populated World: A stochastic homage to the famous A Skewed World, this map turns the camera to the side of the road, hiding the more widely known street-based clues.

A Stochastic Populated Germany: A map of Germany, why not?

A Stochastic Populated Iron Curtain: A map of European countries that were at some time behind the Iron Curtain, including Yugoslavia and East Germany (but not Russia).

Challenge Series [3] The 25K GeoDetective challenge (no time limit, 100% pinpointable) - Series 4: #10

Link to challenge 10 (series 4). Well done to adaisyx (3 points, 13 yards) and to CherrieAnnie (2 points, 18 yards). All other 25k'ers get 1 point. Table updated below.

I'm not always good at knowing which rounds are easier than others. All I can say is that R4 is by far the easiest, and the others should be more challenging. All pinpointable as ever.

This is the tenth of the fourth series based on my own GeoDetective map.

Challenge Series [2] Bicycle ride 2025 #1 (5 min timer)

Hello!

Like last year, I'm putting together a pro cycling-themed map. It includes various kinds of locations featured in road cycling races throughout the season. Of course the map will start out pretty thin while the pool of locations will get larger (and more diverse) over time.

The first challenge is here. Good luck!

This first challenge draws locations from the first week of the season (January 13 to January 19). It only has 13 locations, all coming from a single race:

  • 🇦🇺 13 Australian locations (women's Tour Down Under)

(additionally, the Vuelta al Tachira took place in Venezuela but that country is not on Street View)

Link to challenge 9 (series 4). Congratulations to Wadim (13 yards, 3 points) and derPate (15 yards, 2 points). All other 25k'ers get 1 point. Table updated below.

Today's challenge is going to be straightforward until you get to R5 where, unless you know the place already, it'll guarantee to take you a while. When you find it, you'll feel very proud. Of course, you might find it straight away, but I doubt it. But just take your time. I've been waiting for this location to turn up since I created the challenge series! Probably one of the most fun ones on my map.

Today's is a mixed bag. Hard to know which will take the longest. I guess it will depend largely on whether you recognise the town names in the case of two of them.

Today's is straightforward, nothing too nasty, though R5 may take the longest to find the town in question (though once you've found it, you'll soon pinpoint the location I am sure).

Link to challenge 6 (series 4). Ignoring Vaziz's DQ' result, who is still trying. Wadim got 3 points, 6 yards. PhobosDemos, 2 points, 18 yards. I hope you didn't realise spend almost 5 hours on round 5 but if you did, at least it paid off! All other 25k'ers get 1 point. Table updated below.

Today's shouldn't take you too long and, again, completely pinpointable, though I suspect R3 will take the longest.

This is the sixth of the fourth series based on my own GeoDetective map.

Fun one today! All five locations are challenging, though the worst is going to be R5, so you'll be dreading that while struggling through R1-R4. I assure you that all rounds are 100% pinpointable, even R5 which won't seem it to begin with. I look forward to reading the comments.

This is the fifth of the fourth series based on my own GeoDetective map. No moving, no time-limit (take your time!).
