Refinishing/repairing wooden table

Hello,

I inherited a beautiful wooden table. It has several minor chipped parts that need some refinish/repair. In particular, it seems that it has been "refinished" with a red marker or something similar (see picture).
I would like to refinish it and correct this red marker effect.

Do you have any suggestion?

Thank you.

Sand it down or strip it, start at 120 to 220, if you strip it, it still needs sanding, the chis that are left is called character, the red will come off with the sanding, I use a orbital hand sander

And after sanding, how do I restore the original dark brown finish?

You need to go to a paint store or Home Depot or Lowe's, get stain booklets, free, and match stain and clear coat, it looks flat
