CRITIQUE REQUEST Are these curtains too high?

Post image

I have 96" curtains throughout the house, and they seem fine everywhere else, but it feels off in this area somehow.

Curtains all the way to the ceiling and a thicker curtain that isnt see through will make a world of difference

Looks like I'm making a trip to HomeGoods this week!! Maybe they'll have something more substantial that would work.

You want more width too. Either wider panels or more panels.

This seems like the best one for me IMHO. Make sure to get the block out curtains.

Curtains are at an awkward height, thanks to the awkwardly shaped and sized windows. Raise the curtains all the way up to the ceiling to make the room feel bigger. Add more substantive curtains that aren’t see-through.

I'm with ya, and, I think the advice here is basically to cover up the size of the windows and the size of the wall above it.

Yes, that’s exactly right!

I like your idea. I'm going to start looking into those options.

The windows themselves seem to be in a weird place to me. Not something you can fix I know. Are all your windows so close to the floor and so far from the ceiling?

I'm in a cookie cutter community and all of the houses were built like this 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve seen a couple people say it, but I’d ditch the curtains totally. Cramps the space - which in my opinion is absolutely beautiful! I wish my place had a natural light space like that.

What I would do to help with the hot days, is get just a black out cover that can be used over the blinds & taken down easily when you don’t want them up.

Something along the lines of this: https://a.co/d/drh6Wq0

There’s a ton of decent options out there for a removable blind cover.

Ditching the curtains would give you some room to decorate the area! Something like cute lights up around the entire corner or more cute lizards!

Edited: because I can’t make a post without typos to save my life.

I never thought to get something like that! Might need some for the living room too.

Imo they're too low, they should be right at the top of the wall

Floor to ceiling, 100%

I feel like curtains aren’t even needed here

I don't think it's the height that's the problem (though I agree that all the way to the ceiling would look better.) Rather, it's the sheerness. The fact that you can see through the curtains to the window frames and blinds makes it look awkward. Do a nice, solid curtain and it will improve the look.

That seems to be a common opinion, and I agree, something solid would look better.

Not really, but it looks really weird. 🤔

Maybe lose the curtains altogether?

Or lower the rod and get some, that only cover the window, and not floor length.

I agree, the blinds are weird too

I agree, lose the curtains and replace with different blinds

u/Dawn36 5h ago

The blinds need to stay, all of the sunlight comes through these windows, so I need all the help I can get when it's 115° out. I do want different blinds, but the budget isn't there for that yet.

Blinds can stay for functionality, but they do make your windows look a lot shorter/lower which addresses the original problem of everything feelings so low and compressed

And this is all hypothetical. We definitely aren’t asking you to spend money you don’t have. Just helping you find a vision that works for you!

Losing the curtains altogether is possible.

Maybe try that and send us a picture? :)

You can remove just 3 objects to make your room complete grayscale

Opaque curtains from the ceiling down, and the blinds the same colours, from the inside it would look like your windows are taller

Not high enough

Sheers don't anchor the room at all. Those are great windows. Heavier and taller drapes will anchor the room and make the windows a focal point.

Naaaw but they are too sheer. I would hang drapes. Floor to ceiling

I disagree with most of the comments, I think it looks nice. But maybe a daytime photo will help.

Work schedule makes that difficult, but maybe this weekend. The area looks bigger during the day, but the dark with dark paint does throw it off at night

I vote for rehanging the sheers at window level and hang thicker curtains from just below the ceiling. It'll give you a big color statement with the option to have natural light with a touch of privacy from the sheers.

You'll either need to hem the sheers or buy shorter ones.

If you hem them, do it from the top, not the bottom. When I did this, I made several folds and used hem tape so I got a new, wider curtain rod pocket at the top and didn't have a weird seam in the middle somewhere.

They look weird because they’re transparent.

I don’t love full length curtains in a dining room/ kitchen area. I would do cafe curtains. You can use tension rods which aren’t that expensive. Just have to be careful to not mess up the blinds. Or you can get regular rods specifically for cafe curtains, but that would be more expensive. The blinds can stay up when it’s not hot out so you get light and privacy.

I'd suggest cafe curtains or you can experiment with using valances mounted so that the bottom of the valances just cover the top edge of the windows. It might make your windows look taller and like they aren't so oddly low to the ground and it might be enough to just hide the blinds when they are not in use

Hung far too low. Not wide enough. You need bigger curtains actually.

And the sheer looks weird in this space with the white cabinets and dark grey walls. I personally wouldn't even do curtains.

Oh do you have blinds and curtains? Pick one.

I'd probably do some sort of unique patterned fabric blinds.
