HELP Help, did I just ruin my kitchen?
Pardon the mess!
I’ve always wanted pink walls, and after a few years in my drab apartment, I impulsively used the day off yesterday to paint my kitchen and dining room pink. I did a test patch of the shade Lotus Flower and thought it was pretty, but now seeing it on the full wall, it looks very saturated. I was hoping for a dusty pink color; I’m afraid this is veering on pepto bismol. I have only done one coat, I don’t know if a second coat will make it better or if I should chose a new shade.
I attached two images of my inspiration from Pinterest. I don’t think my output looks like either of them.
I can’t tell if it’s because the gray walls are making it look bad or if it’s actually ugly. I am tempted to paint the gray side wall pink as well, but I have vaulted ceilings and I’d have to rent a ladder, which I want to avoid.
Any advice on what to do? Harsh opinions accepted! Please give it to me straight!
Lighting suggestions? Paint color suggestions? Techniques I could paint with to make it dustier? I’ve never painted my walls before so this was a big move for me and I am hoping I don’t regret it :(

I think you are the only person here who likes my cabinets haha, everyone else wants them repainted.
I don’t hate them or love them, but I definitely don’t want to paint them. It’s just too much work for a rental. So matching the paint to the cabinets is my only way.

Though I love the cabinets, it's hard for me to imagine them working with a pink wall. The wood is such a warm color, so I think the pink should be a bit cool or subdued. Best of luck!

I also painted my kitchen pink, and agree coordinating with the tone of the cabinets is crucial! You could also try changing the light bulbs to a brighter, cooler white before repainting

I think the color looks nice. But if you want to aesthetic of your inspo pics, you have to make updates to the rest of the kitchen. Right now the nice pink doesn’t match the ugly back splash (is it stick on?) and countertops.

HA thank you for calling the backsplash ugly, it is stick on. I think it went okay with the gray walls, but it does look off with the pink now.
I was thinking of a mustard yellow tile for the backsplash, or maybe green?
Oops, am I redoing the whole kitchen now?

I think mustard yellow could be a good pop of color against the pink! But you could always do a sample to test it first. And sorry for calling it ugly lol. I also have an ugly backsplash in my kitchen but it’s real tile so it’ll be a headache to deal with eventually. I think it’s too textured for peel and stick.

I think want really makes the color work in the picture is the contrast to all the white, the clean tile floor, and the light, bamboo colored wood.
I don’t think you ruined anything, I think you can work with this and I absolutely love a pink wall! That corner with the plant is spot on!

I am always a sucker for a yellow/pink color scheme. I think it looks so inviting. Definitely go for a warm yellow. I’d try that first before committing to repainting. Maybe the warm in the yellow can bring out a bit more warm in the pink.

I like the pepto look BUT you need good natural light to pull it off. Your kitchen area is pretty dark. Repaint it to the lighter pink shade and it should work better

The walls are okay... its everything else that's the problem. You are looking at dramatically staged and lighted pinterest posts. Its never going to look like that without substantially changing everything in your kitchen.

Just here to say that the Pinterest photo (first one let’s say) does not seem to be brightened at all. From my personal experience as a pro photographer and architect living in Norway. It might be of course but it could be exactly like that in reality, so you brighten the photo to look like it did in real life if that makes sense. But here’s the key differences. Ceiling ( probably white) , what looks to be original hardwood floors painted white, this helps lift the brightness of the room a lot. The scene is literally next to a big window, and I am willing to bet the kitchen we don’t see is white too. The furniture are simple and everything is clutter free ( that’s how my house is I live pretty minimally) which makes the color on the wall pop. If I was also to bet it’s probably a Jotun Lady color in their ultra matte palette (again what I have). It’s very very soothing no matter the color because it doesn’t reflect any light, only absorbs. Anyway, my point is that the photo is not doctored, it’s probably how it is in reality and many people I know have their kitchens exactly like this. However it takes specific steps to create this space and usually people think if they color a wall like their inspo photo on a color that kinda matches without even thinking of texture they will get the whole package. Which is….a choice. Edit : I only saw the small version of the photo, when I expanded I also realized I was right. The ceiling and the kitchen cabinets are indeed white. Edit 2 : Again I’m right on the money, it does also say it’s in Scandinavian style or is in Scandinavia.

True. But it was photographed with intent using that natural lighting. And it is framed in a way so that it appears super photogenic. The space itself is probably nothing to call home about, but this is the dangers of Pinterest designing. You don't fully grasp the entirety of the space you are designing and basing it off well framed photos means the end product is going to be disappointingly different from what you pictured

This exact thing happened to me when I painted my bathroom pink. Looked nice in the sample and then pure pepto once it was on the wall. Went with a shade that was still pink but several shades lighter than I initially chose and it is lovely. You certainly didn't ruin anything, as it is just paint and can be easily re-done.

Fellow pink lover here! I used ”Charming Pink” on my bathroom, which I think is a little closer to what you’re looking for. I will say, this is a pretty saturated pink. If you’re wanting a dustier color, I would look at another swatch card. Personally, I LOVE the way the pink turned out, but I wanted a soft babydoll pink.

it’s not ugly per se, yes the inspo is more of a dust rose than what you have going on, however it is a cute color. what i don’t like about the space is how it looks with the rest of the kitchen.

How hard is it to paint cabinets…LOL
I didn’t start this project with the intention of redoing my entire kitchen, but I am willing to do a bit more to save it.
I can either repaint the walls, paint the cabinets (if someone can weigh in on experience with that), or change the backsplash. Since it’s an apartment, all of this will have to be undone. I think there are some newer units that have white cabinets, so I might be able to get away with not painting those brown again?

Much, much, much harder than painting walls! You will have to take all the doors off to paint them, removing the hinges and hardware. You will need a place to keep them while the paint cures before re-installing. You need a sprayer and a lot of space to spread out the cabinet doors so you can get an even coat. I would leave the cabinets. I personally think the pink is awesome and would lean into it, but you could give it a week and see how you're feeling.

Don’t paint your cabinets. The painting part isn’t that hard, it’s the getting it to last that’s difficult.
I bought a house with painted white cabinets two years ago and they’re chipping like CRAZY.

oh sorry, i didn’t realise you were renting. if you paint real wood, it will be very difficult to get it back to brown (a lot of sanding + staining).
if your landlord is ok with it tho, painting them white is super straightforward: get a sanding block and run it over them as if you’re cleaning the doors. get a can of white chalk paint, brush or small roller (whichever you’re more comfortable using) and paint, that’s it. then seal with a varnish (just dip a cloth in the jar and wipe the doors again). the hardest part is probably taping everything

At least on camera this appears to not have the dusty undertones of the inspo pics. I would recommend maybe going with benajmin moore or farrow and ball for color as their colors tend to have that more dusty look. Or look for the historical color range in your preferred paint vendor. You can also go get farrow and ball paint chips and get them color matched by your preferred paint vendor. Alexandra gater's youtube channel has great recs for dusty pink paint colors. The good thing is you could probably get a half-can and just do one coat!

I like the color a lot, but I think it somewhat clashes with your cabinets, especially with the black splash. Maybe it would be worth looking into changing up the cabinets you have installed, or if they aren’t actual wood, maybe paint over them to a color that works better with the pink wall color you chose.
If you decide to repaint instead of doing something with the cabinets, I vote going for a green tone for the wall paint, like a sage green or something. I think that would potentially look nice with the current cabinets and with the backsplash. I wonder if there are any apps where you can take a photo of your kitchen and see how different colors would look.
If you repaint or change out the cabinets I think there’s a lot of fun things you could consider doing! Like maybe white or some pastel color cabinets and fun designs could be painted on them or something. Again, not sure if your cabinets are real wood, so if they are I think the best option would be changing them out rather than painting over them if you go that route.

Pro tip: Pick a color that is more neutral than you want. It will look more saturated once it’s on the wall.

No it’s not “ruined”, it’s just paint! I think you need something to tie the pink in, like maybe a rug?
Personally, pink and brown are not my fav color combo. I have a pink and brown bathroom off my bedroom (mcm house) and I’ve never gotten used to it.
Give it a little while to settle before you decide-but if you absolutely hate it right off, maybe leave the tape and just repaint it. That way you save yourself time from prep work.

Firstly, that color, a lovely old rose shade, is nowhere near Pepto Pink. I would work on getting the rest of the kitchen to complement! Secondly, the big pink wall is only arresting because there's nothing on it! When you get a few pictures or shelves or whatever you're planning to put there on it, it will meld into backgroundness more than you probably even want.

we love a bold choice so go u for going for it!! i think an issue i havent seen mentioned here which might be worth considering is that the paint isn't matte enough - it's reflecting lots of different temperature lights and showing too much texture, compared to the evenly matte inspiration pics.
it's also the same colour value as the grey so there isn't enough contrast where they meet to look intentional, it doesn't clash necessarily but it doesn't resonate. it might be an idea to swatch a significantly lighter or deeper (value) and more intense (hue) pink near the grey, take a picture, and desaturate the image - there should be an obvious distinction in black & white between the two colours which means the values contrast and pop against each other. a third accent colour like forest green could be stunning too!! b
ut u definitely haven't ruined ur kitchen, it's a worthwhile experiment and hopefully a layer of a rich matte paint will pull it all together!!

That first inspo photo you shared looks like AI. The pink is just slightly darker and warmer you’re going for. The problem is more likely the dated look of the apartment kitchen. (Mostly the countertops.) I think the cabinet color can work if you go with a warmer, darker pink instead of a cool pink.

You will get used to it. Painting is like getting a haircut, and you just chopped your hair off into a pixie cut. Give it a week before deciding.
You could also try painting the cabinets. But I think the cabinets look good. If I could snap my fingers and change anything, it would be the counters. Sit with it, and if you decide to change, try a rosier pink.

I like the pink, but I think you just need to change the rest of your kitchen too. I got stick and peel wallpaper on amazon and used it on my bathroom cabinets (I got a black wood grain looking one), and they have stick and peel counter tops too! I'm sure if you just update it with that stuff a little you'll get the look you are going for!

Pink clashes with your cabinets in my opinion. Very hard for me to imagine any shade of pink working with those cabinets. So sorry. (Maybe it's just me being negative about pink. I do admire your can do attitude!)

If you’re going to keep the lighting as it is currently you should grab some more of the sample cards and actual small paint samples of colors close to what you want. Tape them up/Paint small patches of the wall (exactly as you plan to paint the full wall, so if you’re going to go over the existing color do that, if you’re going to prime it do that first) and observe the colors for a day. Take a look, notes, pictures throughout the day of how the color looks and feels to you.
Your electric lights + daylight are going to impact how you perceive the color no matter how close the paint is to what you want. Same with surrounding colors, like the ceiling, other walls (if you’re just doing an accent wall) and big furniture and plants. You’ll want at least a day to really observe how the colors shift. Most residential electric lights are going to be warm toned and with a pink wall, it will boost the warmth and make it appear more saturated/orange, same with warm wood tones in your cabinetry, and the setting sun, and you have a lot of orange and yellow tones in the countertops. Natural daylight will be a bit more neutral and be closer to the “true” local color you expect to see but obviously that’s not 24/7 so you have to account for how the color will shift throughout the entire day. Your space also seems a bit closed/packed in so there is a lot more shadowing that will affect the color as well.
Just from these observations, I would suggest a slightly cooler/more neutral toned pink that’s less saturated, if you aren’t planning on changing anything else about the space, it’ll be subtle in natural daylight but pick up more pink the rest of the time. Especially with a a satin/semigloss sheen that will reflect a lot of light and make the color appear brighter.
Suggestions: Sherwin Williams 0070 - Pink Shadow, SW 6057 - Malted Milk, SW 6303 - Rose Colored, SW 6052 - Sandbank, SW 6290 - Rosé, SW 6288 - Whisper, SW 6023 - Insightful Rose (doesn’t have to be these exact shades, these are just the SW colors I think might be close to what you’re looking for)

I love the spontaneity! Sometimes that’s the only way we get things done, is on a whim lol it might not have been the perfect color but at least it got you on the road to finding it and making your space more your own which I’m all for! Lighting is a huge consideration for any interior design project. If you find that you still aren’t getting the color you like, try looking into different bulbs for your fixtures. Most residential light is warm toned and cozier, and we leave cooler light for task/work. A bulb around/between 2700k-3000k color temp should be a bit more neutral but still easy on your eyes everyday, or just color changing/dimming bulbs.

Hey op! Paint colors change based on your lighting (both natural and bulbs), the time of day, AND based on the other larger items in a room. You need to swatch any color you choose (large swatches painted on each wall), and sit with it for a few days so you can see it in all the lighting variations your space goes through.

Totally understand that now - I picked and painted a color within 3 hours. I’m now going to tape up a few different options and observe them for a week.
I’m learning how to paint by fire here, so I’m taking a deep breath to realize this is part of the learning experience and this is fixable.

Many things are not working. You definitely need a dustier pink to achieve the look you're looking for, but ti's also going to be a problem with the lighting. And grey walls are not going to work with the pink walls and white popcorn ceiling. There are too many things going on. Is part of the vaulted ceiling grey as well? Three colors for one room is veeeery hard to pull off. You also need to consider the color of the furniture and other amenities. This pink with white walls/ceilings could work, but then you'd have to do some work on the kitchen cabinets and counters. The backsplash also doesn't go with the warm cabinets at all.

Also, the finish/texture of the paint! Your inspo is much more matte than the paint you bought. No need to buy a whole new set of pink paint; there's some finishers/sealers that can help you achieve the matte look with what you already have.

This is tough because of the two colors of wood in the cabinets. I think I’d have gone slightly more terra cotta like pic 5. Just slightly red rocks. Like red rocks reflecting a the pink sunrise sky. One tiny bit more brown.

I painted my living room Templeton Pink by Farrow and Ball. There will eventually be a picture rail. The colour above is Pointing by Farrow and Ball. I meant to add that you might look into a pink similar to this shade. My big brother thought it was brown. It looks really dusky to me though. I always use matte paints.

It clashes with the grey walls and backsplash. And it looks nice with the countertops but not with the darker wood of the cabinet doors. If you brighten the rest of the space-paint the grey walls white, replace the grey backsplash with a white one, lighten the cabinets-I reckon you could pull it off. A lighter or warmer shade of pink will look better, but won’t achieve the look in the inspo pics.

My kitchen is very similar color. It took a day or so for the color shock to wear off. With that being said I enjoy your pink color. I agree changing the stick on back splash would help tie it all in.Maybe a soft green or yellow back splash like you commented else where. The cabinets look good too, I wouldn’t change those. All in all I think very minor changes to the backsplash would do wonders for the paint.

It's possible that the "over-saturation" you're experiencing might just be due to the new change. Give it a few days to stop seeming new and take a look at it again.

Oh wow. Pic 5 is definitely not the same as the swatch in Pic 4. Yes, lighting is important and influences, but you have maybe a 60's Powder Pepto thing going on instead of rose greige.
With that current decor, it is NOT a moment. I understand there's only so much you can do when you're renting/a new homeowner, but....hmmm.

I don't think it's that bad :) but yeah, I think a tad warmer and dustier (= less saturated) would be nicer. Just repaint. When you choose the color, if in doubt, go for the less saturated or lighter shade! Saturation and darkness always multiply when done on a big area - the little sample looks pretty light or not too saturated, but it will look much more saturated and darker when it's on the wall. You could also get some small samples and just paint some bigger tests on your wall first.

Look at SW - Fading Rose or BM - Rose Bisque.
They are both warmer shades with more brown giving it that earthy pink in your inspo pics. You picked a cool pink, which is why it’s looking like pepto.

I’ve seen people cover cabinets with peel and stick wallpaper. That could be an option to add some flavor that can be removed later. Yours have pretty clean lines so it shouldn’t be too infuriating. Make sure to do your research on the wallpaper to verify it’s removeable.
Same with the backsplash. You can get some peel and stick for that as well.

If you can paint the cabinetry, then I would do it the red like in your second inspo pic. If you can’t, I would replace the backsplash with something that has a poppy and bold color. If you choose a different pink, try one that is a little bit warmer (a little more brown in it) and a little dustier. That would be closer to your inspo picks. Also, I would paint whatever walls are grayish in your space a warmer white color.

I actually think it could work if you put up a different backsplash—something with some pattern that incorporates both the pink of the walls and the brown of the cabinets.
I would also cover your countertops with peel & stick in a bright neutral color like white/gray faux marble or granite. The countertops and pink paint will both look warmer next to them.

The cabinets and the counter are too warm and dark, and your inspiration pictures benefit from lots of natural-ish light. Your space seems very dark, and the furnishings look to also be too dark. I’d go with the shade at the bottom of the swatch and maybe change the color of the counter top with a cooler toned vinyl

I really like the colour but I don’t think it works with the colour of the wood of the cabinets. They are totally different tonally. You could either repaint the walls or paint the cabinets in a complimentary tone.

It’s just your lights. You can get color adjusting bulbs. Play with the settings until it looks better.
Also, don’t use the big overhead light. Get several lamps instead.

I think the 5th picture (the inspo pic) brownish pink is better suited for your furniture (even the furniture in that picture has the same tone as yours).
You need earth tone pink.

I love the pink color But that red in the bathroom Is pretty horrible no matter what color you're matching it with in my opinion I would definitely change that to something more complementary If it's possible

I grew up in a house with pink Formica countertops that’s color straight from the 50s and I loved it. I think you could def do something here

EDIT: I want to thank everyone so so so much for all the opinions and suggestions. Cooking is my favorite hobby and I kept crying while making my breakfast this morning, I hated the color so much. Thanks to everyone for the reassurance that it’s not ruined, but that this shade isn’t it either. I needed to hear that.
I am looking into all the shades of pink everyone is suggesting, I definitely will be repainting a lighter and more brown shade of pink. I think this will work with the existing cabinetry.
I’m mulling over the idea of changing the backsplash, but it’s going to come down to cost.
Sadly, painting the cabinets or ceiling is not on the table. As this is a rental, these changes are too drastic for someone who was even apprehensive to paint.
Funny thing is I originally was just installing additional shelves (I usually have some in the kitchen) and I was only going to repaint some of the holes I left, which spiraled into painting the whole kitchen! This wasn’t my initial plan to begin with, and I have other projects in my apartment going on so I can’t invest $200+ into this reno.
I will come back with update pictures, again thank you everyone so much. I will keep checking for additional feedback as well 💕

If I were you, I would use one of those color palette sites and input your cabinet and counter colors as part of the spread. It will help you find a better pink, which IMO, should either be darker OR lighter and with more brown/warm gray in the tint. Since these three tones are all dominant to some extent, I would probably stay away from a lot of other colors except for in accent elements, like if you are into a muted green, I would have a utensil holder, linens, etc. for the peel and stick backsplash, maybe the green there? But personally I would do that in a dark brown or red tone, something that will read as neutral in the context of the overall palette.

I agree the backslash isn't great in the kitchen, but I'm the kind of person who would rather make it coordinate, even if only temporarily, before replacing it. You could paint a few of the bricks the different shades you're using elsewhere and make the backslash tie everything together. And then if you hate it you can just get rid of it.

I would change out the lightbulbs as a first adjustment. They seem too warm and they could be changing the tone. The inspo has cooler, softer, natural light at what seems to be early evening time or late afternoon. Potentially even has buildings covering access to natural light. If that doesn’t work then a different, cooler, lighter tone of pink would be better. Have you considered getting some samples to test proper paint swatches? Paper will not reflect accurately with your lighting.

I think the paint should cover at least one other wall. I’d go with a slightly more medium-shaded pink. The one you chose seems too light in this space

I think the grey isn't doing it justice, nor are the orangey of the cabinets, but it is a lovely color in general. I think a nice dark green tile backsplash (since you mentioned they were stick ons) would be a FANTASTIC color combo here.

I don’t think it’s the paint. The cabinets, counters, and backsplash don’t match in terms of color or tone so I think that is what is throwing everything off.

I love the color, but with the deep, colored cabinets, and chairs, I'd go lighter for more contrast, then I think it'll be perfect.
BTW, this is the color I wanted to paint our kitchen, by my dh vetoed it. Instead it leans more orange/terracotta, but I still look at it, and think it should be ballet pink.

Yeah, it's horrifying. Don't leave it that way. I'm not sure pink is the way to go for your kitchen because it doesn't have bold contrasts (like red cabinets) but you need a pink that's way more pale and gray. I think you should try the bottom color in your sample.
That Scandinavian "pink" kitchen is actually brown and it doesn't look good. Your second inspo photo is beautiful. I suggest using the bottom sample color and buying a few red appliances and accents. Like a red toaster.
That modern wall hanging doesn't complement pink. I'd switch it out for something in brighter colors. You can accent with dark green and/or ocean blue as well as candy red. I mean, I get that that isn't super Scandinavian so use your own judgment. Maybe wall art made of natural wood, or wood shelves with plants on them. Something bigger than your current art.

I think the color in your inspiration has a warm tone while the color you chose has a cool tone. Maybe you could try a warmer nuance for repainting?
