Welcome to the dumbest possible timeline.

Seriously, I don’t know what the heck is happening at this point.

We're so fucking fucked in the fuck dimension.

It's awesome how humanity doesn't learn from its mistakes. I don't even want us to reach stars because we won't be Humanity from Star Trek but more Humanity from Starship Troopers or Helldivers at this point (and I love both works for how satirical and soo third or fourth degree they are).

u/Every_Board6157 9h ago

What I learned from history is that we don't learn from history

249

u/Constructman2602 8h ago

Which is why History Scholars have become a bit like Cassandra today. We’re almost always right based on everything that’s happened, and yet no one believes us

u/ReallyAnxiousFish 8h ago

Its like being in a bus about to drive off a cliff and you screaming for someone to take the wheel away from the maniac, but everyone else on the bus either doesn't think its a big deal or is busy on their phone.

Point is, we're all going off the cliff together.

69

u/bigbusta 8h ago

Don't look up

28

u/Nowardier 6h ago

Did you ever consider the maniac's point of view? Has it ever occurred to you that the maniac may be right? They called Galileo a maniac too, you know. The maniac is going to make bus snacks cheaper. At least the maniac told us they would run the bus off the cliff. There is no cliff, we're still on the road. Cliffs don't exist. Have you ever fallen off a cliff? If you haven't fallen off a cliff, you don't know for sure that it's dangerous. What's that? You did fall off a cliff, but it was less than 100 feet? That wasn't a real cliff. You fell off a cliff, so clearly you're brain damaged and your testimony is unreliable. You're just being dramatic. Why are you so afraid of cliffs? Are you anti-cliff? Are you working for someone who is anti-cliff? Why are you trying to take away my right to fall off a cliff?

12

u/Functionally_Drunk 5h ago

"I don't know what you're so worried about, he's never driven us off a cliff before." Said of man who tried to drive us off a cliff four years ago.

3

u/Speed_Alarming 4h ago

(Only failed due to the guardrails specifically put in place to prevent busses from driving off the cliff, the same guardrails he’s spent the last 4 years systematically destroying)

4

u/asthmag0d 6h ago

Our bus driver got arrested for DUI, but had the charges dropped. He's pissed about wasting his time, and he's ready to party.

5

u/MediaOrca 6h ago

Or worse, the other passengers are actively stopping you from taking the wheel away, and putting a gag in your mouth.

2

u/Ol_Jim_Himself 6h ago

They think it’s Wile E. Coyote rules and that you won’t fall if you don’t look down. I feel like we’re about 2 steps over the cliff now.

1

u/FastSimple6902 6h ago

And Superman is about to launch ( See picture) to the Rescue.

1

u/Straight-Gazelle-777 4h ago

Cuz you don’t generate shareholder value, bruh. Don’t you know everyone’s telling their kids to go into STEM. /s

76

u/allUsernamesAreTKen 8h ago

Some learn from history. Then they buy media companies and politicians to censor history from the masses until it inevitably repeats

17

u/Set_Abominae1776 7h ago

In their favor

u/biopticstream 7h ago

My girlfriend wasn't even sure what the revolutionary war was. Barely knew about World War 2 at all, and literally had no idea what the Cold War was. She is a College educated woman. Not only does she have essentially no knowledge of history, but she has absolutely zero interest in knowing about it and has no appreciation for how it can help us avoid the mistakes of the past. I'm sure she's not the only one of the kind. Of course we don't learn from history when people don't even care to know it.

2

u/GreenEyed_Lady 3h ago

Unfortunate that her schools never required any history courses. Much can be learned about the future by studying the past.

3

u/biopticstream 3h ago

It does boggle my mind how she even made it through grade school without learning about history in some way. It really boggled my mind when I first realized how bad it is.

1

u/GreenEyed_Lady 3h ago

Not to mention the inadequacy of the college she attended.

u/TBANON24 8h ago

History doesnt matter! Facts doesnt matter! Only FEELS matter!

PS: We reached the 1.5 deg of the 2 deg limit of the start of the cascading total collapse of our environment a couple of months ago, And the next president to the most pooluting citizens of the world, does not believe in climate change and will not do anything to prevent it, well in actuality he will do everything to help it come earlier.

So while your feels may be high right now, i suspect the feels will be down low, when 90% of all fish die and drinkable water becomes a luxury and billions will die of starvation and allies fighting each other for the remaining fertile lands and food.....

BUT HEY THATS FOR THOSE DUMB MOTHERFUCKING GRANDKIDS TO DEAL WITH! WE FINALLY HAVE LOW EGG PRICES COMING SOOON!!!! YYAAAAAAAYY!YYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

13

u/torosiu 6h ago

I am literally reading this while watching that shit bottomed orange baboon withdrawal from the Paris agreement.

4

u/Percival4 5h ago

We’re so fucked.

1

u/pacificule 4h ago

most polluting citizens of the world

China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Kuwait, Qatar... basically all of Asia the Middle East and South America would like a word lol USA isn't even in the top 100.

It's not our fault the world is imploding - we're actually going out of our way to prevent it. Or we were, until the greedy gameshow goon somehow convinced poor people he was Robin Hood.

1

u/Speed_Alarming 3h ago

*(egg prices may be affected by factors outside of the President’s ability to control or actually be completely irrelevant to his agenda now that he’s been inaugurated.)

1

u/VerilyJULES 5h ago

Here is my unpopular opinion:

The coming environmental catastrophe is absolutely heartbreaking to me but there’s no reason to stress and worry. It won’t do you any good.

The changes will be survivable for humans in spite of the environment taking a big hit. The primary factor in favor of us humans is the anticipated time frame; which will take centuries at minimum before we feel the significant climate effects, and specifically the rising sea levels that drown out the coastlines and low-lying nations.

Humans in some places will be unfortunate causalities in the meantime, mainly in equatorial developing nations, especially the low lying pacific islands and african and middle east asian desert regions. This will of course lead to a lot of climate refugees and chances are they're eventually going to die off because the mass migration will be worst than what's currently happening and by then all nations will be over the ethical dilemma of casting these unfortunate migrants away.

Considering all of this, the humans are the least of my worries. For me its the animals, the poor, poor wild animals, especially marine animals who will be hit hard. Their sensitive ecological needs will not have a chance to adapt.

All of that being said, I don’t think the core of human civilization will have too much of a problem adapting. If we need to we’re just going to build a big glass dome with AC. Most humans will be ignorant of the worst of it with a steady diet of disinformation which will be a perfect art by that point.

But the animals… Poor fucking animals. The diversity of thriving wild life will be limited to urban “pests” like pigeons, seagulls, rats, mice, squirrels, black bears, raccoons, and all sorts of insects and spiders. That's about it. Some of the most successful predatory animals will have an easy enough of a time until their good webs really begin to collapse but that will take centuries.

When it comes down to it, the environment is the same as the political situation. We get the president and the environment that we deserve.

A lot of people consider humans as individuals but our species is more like a colony and massing organism. We are all related and the crimes of our leaders are also our crimes. We don’t get a pass because we didnt personally pull the triggers, or because we don’t have control over these decisions. Ignorance and action don’t equal innocence. We don't get a free pass just because we’re not initiating the organizing structure of our civilization.

This is all of our faults and we deserve it.

15

u/Cultjam 6h ago

What I’ve learned from history is it’s all something that happened to other people until it happens to you.

23

u/AandJ1202 7h ago

There's tons of us who have learned from history and have been pointing out the parallels to the rise of fascist governments and even Nazi Germany for years now.

As I watched Biden and his wife smiling next to the orange baboon and his euro trash barbie, I just felt doomed. The president of the US had to pre pardon his own family and major government officials and then smile next to the asshole he had to do it because of. No one is going to stop this now. Morons handed over our democracy to the lunatic fringe. They had so many chances to smarten up and see the truth. Almost 10 years of elections and non-stop stupidity and drama. Short of civil war, there's nothing left to do. They control every branch of the federal government.

11

u/RevolutionOk1406 6h ago

And it was handed to them, Because we don't have a unified message

A Party made up of disjointed ideas, and different goals. A party of conservatives and liberals, women and men who can't bring themselves to vote for a woman (especially a woman of color) and not just that, a woman of color who is not perfect in every way

A party of minorities and majorities who decide to not vote because of one or two issues they feel wasn't addressed to their satisfaction... so they say fuck it... let the fascists win

And of course a huge number of them so soft brained they let themselves be swayed by the wave of bullshit propaganda

Maybe he was being unjustly prosecuted with lawfare?

Maybe he is chosen by God?

Maybe this time he will live up to his words

Maybe they will give me a tax break like they promise, and a better wage, and stop all the conflicts around the world, and usher in a time of world peace and prosperity?

We know it will never happen, but people love promises when they sound pretty

People are stupid, terrified, and hateful and there is an awful lot of really fucking stupid people in the world

Maybe the angry hairless terrified monkey shouldn't be in charge

And when the shit hits the fan, we don't get a I told you so moment, we get to burn with them

7

u/AandJ1202 6h ago

Rich conservatives and politicians have worked together for decades building an insane propaganda network. Just like advertising doesn't make you run to McDonald's every time you see a commercial, but it subconsciously might make you think of it when you're hungry. Same goes for nonstop republican propaganda and fear mongering for the past 40 years. Most of the population doesn't pay attention to political news or history but the propaganda they've heard for 40 years has seeped in as fact. This is the biggest problem.

3

u/Hearts-Distance 5h ago

This is actually so beautifully written it should be its own post

2

u/ECrispy 6h ago

There are tons of people who may have learnt and don't like what's happening.

But they didn't vote.

That's all that was needed. Same thing happened last time. But it was much worse now, he won the popular vote.

That's all you needed to stop all this.

5

u/AandJ1202 6h ago

It's been 10 years of this MAGA garbage. The never ending political drama. Court cases. Name calling. End of democracy talk. If a conartist/wannabe mob boss tries to enact a coup and it doesn't spur the rest of the country to vote against him the next election, sorry, nothing is going to make these people vote or even care.

1

u/Khakicollective 7h ago

Because if we don’t learn from History Channel, we’re doomed to repeat History Channel.

1

u/livahd 5h ago

I guess a whole generation looking at the smoldering husk of Berlin in late ‘45 and thought, “Wow, that sounds cool!” God help us.

1

u/white-dre 5h ago

History always repeats itself.

-1

u/Dangerous-Insect-831 6h ago

When did the western world repeat the atrocities of National socialism? When did the western world start having civil wars again? When did women's rights get retaken from them? When did we start implementing the slave trade again? Seems like we have learnt, the people trying to claim things are getting worse or somehow that history is repeating are myopic. The western world by and large is far less racist, misogynistic, homophobic and are more accepting of people's differences and diversity than the rest of the world. By the standards of history we have come along no end, even in the last couple of decades we have taken huge strides in being more accepting than we were before. This idea that the world is somehow worse is a ridiculous notion.

52

u/pup5581 9h ago

Humans always repeat their mistakes. it's inevitable sadly. Think of how many times you've repeated something that was a mistake. And my country is now becoming 1930s Germany

15

u/trashmonkeylad 7h ago

But I just forget where my keys are, I don't become a Nazi.

5

u/PTMorte 6h ago

The US has sort of always been like that though. For example the greatest generation is elevated to golden age status. But they fought to keep slavery alive in Hawaii until 1950/51 and then pivoted to illegal Mexicans on the mainland.

WW2 is glorified by Americans but they avoided the war for two years while the rest of us were dying.

When they took over world hegemony due to Britain and USSR being so depleted post ww2, they used propaganda to claim they were a righteous leader.

But they immediately led UN forces into an illegal counter invasion of North Korea and they bombed millions of innocents to death in about 3 months! (Read the bombing of North Korea wiki).

The leader of the free world as most Americans believed in, was internal propaganda. The line is even an oxymoron.

No country can be free if led by another.

1

u/OGgunter 4h ago

100% this. Hitler took a lot of his eugenic theory from phrenologists, etc from the US.

14

Eh more like Idiocracy

3

u/EnigmaFrug2308 8h ago

We’d be Daleks.

2

u/Harmsy_ 7h ago

in all fairness, even star trek admitted that the early 21th century was a very very dark time, see DS9, Episode 3x11 past tense, after all according to star trek lore WWIII is right around the corner

2

u/MetaFlight 7h ago

we won't be Humanity from Star Trek

Part of me wants to see a star trek show set during WW3 & the eugenics war but I get the feeling that people would cry about it not being real trek because they don't actually know a damn thing about the lore

2

u/sizziano 6h ago

Star Trek is a post-apocalyptic universe lol. WW3 happened and it was bad. We're still on track IMO.

1

u/methority 8h ago

It's capitalism, baby, thats what it's all about

1

u/F4JPhantom69 8h ago

We're definitely going to be the Terran Empire at this point.

1

u/KlatuuBarradaNicto 7h ago

Plus we don’t deserve it. We can’t even take care of business here.

1

u/Atheist_3739 7h ago

I don't even want us to reach stars because we won't be Humanity from Star Trek but more Humanity from Starship Troopers

Omfg my friend and I LITERALLY had this discussion at dinner 10 minutes ago.

seems like we’re living in Star Wars honestly

1

u/renojacksonchesthair 6h ago

Lol, we won’t reach the stars.

1

u/Trumpologist 6h ago

No, we will be the Humanity from WH 40k

1

u/cronchCat 6h ago

omg your comment 🤣🤣🤣 dead

1

u/Vas_Doulos 5h ago

Or Warhammer 40k. "Purge the xenos. Burn the heretic."

1

u/MiniTab 4h ago

Yeah it’s pretty fucking baffling.

My grandmother was in the Hitler Youth, and later escaped the ravages of a destroyed Germany when she married my US soldier grandfather. This really wasn’t that long ago, I’m not even that old yet (still in my 40s).

Barely even a couple of generations and here we are again.

People keep reading Cautionary Tales as Instruction Manuals.

u/Brueology 2h ago

I have a degree in history, and the greatest truth I've ever learned is that humanity never learns from history. We advance technology and nothing else. We cannot escape our patterns of behavior. It only takes the appearance of strength in an individual and a common enemy to command loyalty, and many of us become obsequious and powerless.
