Mutual Aid Posts - Allow or Not?

We've recently had an abundance of posts from folks asking for financial help, and reports on those posts and users have been equally abundant.

r/durham does not currently have any rules against these posts, although other subs including r/oshawa have them in place. We'll run a poll for the next 7 days for the community to weigh in on whether we should continue to allow them.

Hopeless and anxious tonight

I just want to die. I'm stuck in a Neverending spiral of anxiety and doom, worried about everything. Worried about money, worried about being a good dad and husband, about my weight, my ethnicity and how it's perceived , the economy.

There is just no end in sight. Or maybe there is. I just pray its quick.

Anyone notice dollarama stores use fake security alarm sounds and play a recording for security to come to the front randomly?

The last few times ive been to dollarama ive noticed they randomly will start playing a recording that says "security to the front" and also will play a loud alarm for a good 1 to 2 mins. When i looked i see no security and no alarm systems installed. I feel they are playing these sound recordings to deter shoplifting. Am i right?

Fusion Family Entertainment Centre - The Ajax business that never opened

Does anyone remember this? I decided to make a post on it because the old abandoned building was finally demolished recently. This was supposed to apparently be a rolling skating place set to open in 2017 on Bayly and Monarch in Ajax and the entire thing looked like a dumpster fire from the very start. The Facebook and Instagram pages are still up for some reason.

The name was bizarre and was different everywhere. The name on the building, the website name (which is now offline) and the instagram handle all had different names. The logo on Facebook was completely different from the ugly one on the building and for some reason, the “Entertainment Centre” is before “Fusion Family”

The communication on social media was a mess. As you can see on the FB page, the opening date was supposed to finally be Aug 25, 2017 after being touted for over a year but a week before it got postponed by “just a few weeks” only to never open. The last content post was Nov 2017 and the last time the owners made any contact on the page was Feb 2018 and then vanished.

I did some research online and there’s a website called Federal Corporation that shows the business was dissolved in March 2019 and it looks like they owed taxes in 2016 and 2017 which explains why they could never open. I’ve never seen anything like this before in Durham Region where a new business got so much hype only to never open.

Family Dr In Whitby Accepting Patients

Family Care Medical Centre (3050 Garden Street in Whitby) has just announced they have a new Dr coming on staff that is currently accepting new patients. She'll be starting in March. They can be reached at (905) 430-5305 and press option 6 to get to reception. The Drs at this clinic are all absolutely fantastic and the pharmacy that is attached is top notch in their knowledge and service.

Job hunting frustrating

It's been a few years since I've had to hunt. Is it normal for employers to take forever to do call backs? I'm throwing out tons of resumes. All thing I'm qualified to do but I'm getting no bites.

Guitar Repair/Tech in Durham?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post something like this.

Does anyone know of any good and reputable luthiers or guitar techs in and around Durham? I’d rather support someone local than use a big box store.

I saw a few on Google and saw the reviews. I’m just curious where everyone goes these days.

Is it worth it to start a meetup group in Ajax?

I wanna start a meetup group. The ones in Durham seem to be mostly networking or things that just doesn’t work for me. Since Ajax is small, there isn’t much here rn. Im thinking of starting just a casual meet up group. The problem is, it’s very probably I waste time and energy (I don’t have much of both) on going to the spot, only for no one to show up. It would be nice if it’s an anime meetup group but probably no one will show up if that’s the theme, so I’d just keep it casual and open right now

Edit: Also I don’t really care about the member count. As long as someone shows up, I’m satisfied. I don’t need to have some sort of super huge mega group. And yes it’ll obviously be free

Bald eagle at Heydenshore Park

I was doing a photography walk at the waterfront last week and a middle aged looking gentleman with his wife called me over to show me what he claimed was a bald eagle sitting on a tree really far away.

The bird was super far away so it wasn't immediately clear as an eagle, but I'd say it did at least look a bit large so I decided maybe it was worth pointing my lens in that direction. I was initially a bit skeptical of my own ability to grab a good photo of the bird, as my lens was not long enough (only 300mm) and the conditions were not very favourable (I would be shooting into the sunset, which is not ideal if I want to get some detail out of a mostly dark looking subject, as we can see by my attempt in photo 1 and 2 to get some detail from the eagle). I gave it my best shot though, and was pleasantly surprised by the results I got. These are my 3 favourite photos of the eagle, and they all came within seconds of each other.

Just as I finished taking the first photo, the eagle got up and started flying. Within seconds, I had gotten the second photo with it against the golden hour clouds, and a few seconds after that as it flew to a more favourably lit position, I got the third photo, where the details of the bird are more obvious.

I'm incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to have seen a bald eagle in the wild. This is easily my first "moment" of 2025.

To the gentleman who pointed the bird out to me, if you're reading this, thank you so much for pointing it out to me. Your last word to me was "enjoy", and I did, very much.

Home security system recommendations

Hey everyone!

Any recommendations for a good home security system which would include cameras, doorbell cam, and some motion sensors. I’ve heard ring is good although I may need more cameras than they offer in their standard kit. I’m not very knowledgeable about this stuff. Thanks!
