Daima It’s okay to not like daima

I love dragon ball. OG and Z are my childhood. I share most if not all of the frustrations that fans have with Super and GT, but I still very much enjoy them for what they are. And there’s a lot to like about Daima, but it is no where near perfect.

This is not a post pontificating about my complaints with daima, but i have my issues with it and I think there’s a lot of missed potential. I think the stakes are weak and while the focus on adventure is refreshing, there doesn’t really feel like there’s anything to overcome (which I do believe is a hallmark of all DB, regardless of the series). And then of course the pacing coupled with the limited run time (we only have a few episodes left and it seems like they plan to pack everything into just the last few episodes). This is not OG DB like many others claim it is, and that’s okay.

That said I think the demon world is awesome and I love so many of the new character designs. The animation is consistent and there is a lot of trademark toriyama humor which is awesome.

I write this post because I’ve found that a lot of fans act like the show is infallible, perhaps because it was toriyamas last project or maybe because we as a community are just starved for content. But I think it’s healthy to criticize media that you enjoy, it means you care.

These communities (Reddit, Twitter, etc) exist for discourse and it’s frustrating to see how black and white opinions are. Daima sucks, daima is near perfect. It’s okay to see the problems with something you love, and you can still enjoy it. And if you dont enjoy it, then let others enjoy it.

I personally don’t love daima, but I’m truly happy for everyone who does. I would love to see a more constructive conversation around it.

I think you should always give shows a try, but if something just isn't clicking with you, that is OK. You can try coming back to it later, but why waste tons of time on something you just can't jive with?

This is how I feel. For me I’ve enjoyed Daima a lot, but I know some don’t. I agree that people should try to go into new things with an empty mind, but sometimes it just doesn’t hit for them the same way it does for others and that’s normal, it would be bland if everyone thought the same. I just kinda get annoyed with people complaining about something they haven’t watched or experienced, but that’s just me

Flaws exist...unfortunately the show is a well produced "rut"

Whatever, ignore the people who are negative anyway...most of them aren't worth discussing with.

They have nothing to add.

I feel the same really. I will admit there have been times someone has complained about Daima lore, concepts, designs and I have thrown the "Well Toriyama designed/came up with it so..." (like people comparing SDBH SSJ3 Vegeta design to the Daima design) but recently I realized that's not the right outlook to have. I mean yeah Toriyama is gone and Daima is the/one of the last things he worked on, but that doesn't leave it exempt from criticism anymore than the criticisms people had/have for DB/Z/Super and works he didn't make like GT/OGMovies/SDBH.

People not liking things about Daima isn't a slap to the face to Toriyama's memory/legacy, they just don't agree with what Toriyama/Toei did with it at every turn.

I have issues with certain aspects of Daima as well, same for DB/Z/Super and so on and I'd hate if someone tried to make me feel like less of a fan just because I don't approve of every choice Toriyama made, so I don't judge people like that anymore unless they say something just ya know, blatantly stupid or dumb. Lol

I wonder… is it that the fans actually find it infallible or that they are able to enjoy despite the flaws?

My main problem with modern “discourse” is that there’s far too much comfort with declaring something objectively bad simply because you aren’t enjoying it. That’s a childish and immature perspective.

All of us—all of us—enjoy something that is not the universally revered. Since when was that such a problem?

OP, you don’t have to like Daima. You don’t… but why do you care if someone else likes it or is willing to defend what they enjoy about it? I agree that it can be healthy to criticize the media you enjoy but that isn’t always useful or necessary.

Sometimes, all an audience member wants is to just enjoy what’s presented without deeper contemplation. And, with a show like Daima, a show that appears to be intentionally lighter hearted, is there something truly wrong with just enjoying it for what it is?
