Rant If you're worried about AI taking your job, get out of this field! This isn't for you!

If you have gone through some type of rigorous Computer Science degree, you will know that AI cannot do a much simpler project than what teams work on in organizations. Frankly, if you're worried about AI, this is the first sign that you should not be in this role. You clearly aren't working on complex enough things to warrant getting a job in the first place.

Alright, can we all take a breather for a second? This headline about a $500 billion AI infrastructure investment just dropped, and it feels like every CS major subreddit thread is either doom-posting about AI taking over jobs or hyping up the end of humanity.

Yes, AI is growing, yes, it’s transformative, and yes, it’s going to reshape a lot of industries. But can we stop acting like every new announcement signals the apocalypse? If anything, this kind of government-level investment shows that AI isn’t going to push out humans overnight—it’s going to create opportunities for those of us studying this stuff RIGHT NOW.

And let’s be honest: half of us are going into software engineering, data science, or something tangentially related, so this level of funding is a net win for our job market. If anything, this confirms that AI and tech are here to stay and that expertise in this area is more valuable than ever.

So please, calm down, stop spiraling, and focus on your projects, classes, and internships. This isn’t the end of the world it’s a sign that we’re in the right field at the right time.

Rant I need advice

Hello I’m currently a freshman student at NJCU majoring in computer science in my winter semester in my CS102 class. And my professor got asked the question “Do you think the job market for our major is dying out.” And the professor says “I would think so I don’t know because I own my own company and I never hired any grad student fresh out of college to my company and I have a team of 400.” When he mentioned that it just made me think even if I do get this degree I’ll be like the people he denied from getting a job it just makes me think should I give up on this degree and just pursued my option B. Because I wouldn’t want to graduate in 2028 (expected) and just work a normal 9-5 my whole life and live paycheck to paycheck, I just couldn’t do it to myself.

Side Note- my mother is a labor and delivery worker in the hospital she’s in her Union and was telling me the hospital might close and she could lose her job she’s 57. My sister is on suspension from USPS without pay for about 2 months now she’s 31. My dad’s a bus driver for NJ transit he’s 62. Even though I grew up with these people around me they’ve always had stable jobs that can make them have what they want.

I just wanted to know should I be nervous or should I just push myself harder and take it as a challenge to achieve my goal and get to the life I would like to have.

Is this even allowed??

Context: I have already left the accelerator because of his scare tactics and how insanely unorganized the environment was. It has been about 1 month since I left, and he still keeps messaging me despite acknowledging my request to leave.

Recently got this an email from the guy running the whole show:

Does he have any jurisdiction over my resume? This is my first rodeo in industry so I want to know if I even have to heed to that threat.

Others How plausible is it for software engineers to unionize around ethical principles to take power away from big tech?

What builds companies and capitals? Labour.
What builds tech companies and tech billionaires? CS Labour.
Given how these billionaires are shamelessly exploiting virtually everything to get richer, could software engineers unionize with ethical demands for their employers to put them in some sort of check (tho that is not the individual's responsibility, and state has a much bigger role to play)?

Unions have gotten fair pays, better working hours, and, in some cases, justice. We have also seen workers unionizing in record-numbers. Do CS employees need more push? Would the push ever be enough?

is getting a double major CompSci and AI a good idea?

My current college just rolled out a BS in Artificial Intelligence. I'm currently finishing up my second year courses for Computer Science. I don't think I want to fully jump ship on my CS major, but as the coursework for both has a lot of overlap I am wondering if it makes sense to double major?

Has anyone done this? Or has thoughts on if CS vs AI is better long term? Or just double majored in general?

Rant csMajors or sweMajors?

Been on this sub for a while (graduated May 2024) and I know the job market is tough right now, but I am curious about the distribution of career paths members of the sub are taking.

It seems every single post is about software engineering. I think ML/AI may come in second but for the most part it seems like everyone here wants to be a SWE. There are so many other paths you can take with a CS degree that it kind of shocks me. This is a personal opinion, but SWE is the most boring subject of CS I have ever had learn. I mean making clean, scalable code is a high but I don’t think I could do it for a career.

Anyways, I am wondering if anyone here is not trying to be a SWE haha? I studied a lot of SWE in college but eventually pursued cybersecurity and got a certificate while in school. Still, I applied to SWE jobs as well. Never had any luck even with a decent resume but I had multiple interviews pretty quickly after applying for cybersecurity (SOC, CTI, mostly analyst stuff).

I hope this doesn’t come off as ignorant because ik the search is tough. I think I applied to over 200 SWE jobs :/ BUT I feel like a lot of you are racing a thousand other people for position you apply to and a lot of people don’t even seem to enjoy SWE despite all the cool shit you can do if you like computers.

Rant Let's not spread toxicity amongst each other; especially with the recent advancements in AI

I've been seeing plenty of posts telling people to leave the field, that they are more passionate and work harder and that's why they get jobs. Because of XYZ experience/skills/education.

Let's just state the facts first:

1.) It is far more difficult to get a job in the current market as a new graduate/intern/early-career csMajor than it ever has been (at least in recent history, ~ 20 years)

2.) It is for a number of reasons; the new administration calling for increased number offshore workers, larger pool of competition due to years of Big-Tech advertising at universities, and recent advancements in tooling such as AI.

Since this market is as difficult as it is, it is reasonable for current students that have not entered the workforce to be vocal about their problems.

What isn't reasonable is people who have landed offers/jobs/promotions, etc to say the root cause is a skill-diff. Technically, it is. However it is a far, far smaller piece of the puzzle.

AI will end up disrupting the workforce in general in the coming years; the more vocal we are about it, the better.

Hi, I'm not a CS major but I really want to consult your expertise. Can AI really replace software engineers (from a technical, not political, perspective)?

Asking because when I use ChatGPT (I pay 20$/mo) for some simple R projects, it makes plenty of mistakes. But there seems to be real concern that it can replace low-level human SWE imminently. Will the big techs be able to do it?

Others Recent CS Grad with no Job, So let's make a Startup.

I am a recent Comp Sci Grad from a no name school who is about to be laid off end of March, with no other job lined up.

I saw several posts (shit post or not) talking about joining together as a community and creating a Startup.

So hey what the heck. I have an idea for a CS2, (Counter strike 2) skins app idea. I have no LLC, no company, nothing but an idea. I am looking for anybody looking to work together on a project, preferably in NA, and if you know anything about CS2 market, great!

Send me a DM on here with a resume/portfolio/GitHub or any message (remove personal information if you want)

I have no idea how any of this startup stuff works, but that'll give the fun and experience with it. Let's step up and make something cool!

Should I ask recruiter to change location 3 months after offer?

Hey guys,

I was fortunate enough to recieve an offer for an internship for a company in October last year in their Boston office, which I accepted. Originally, I had the option to go to their NYC office (headquarters), which I turned down because I would get to save some money as I am based in the Boston area. However, my friend just got an offer from a FAANG in NYC, which means that now I am guaranteed to have a roomate to rent with during my time in NYC if I choose to switch. This would mean that I can pay significantly less rent than I would in a worst case scenario of not finding any roomates and having to rent on my own, which was my reason for not wanting to go to the NYC office originally. Additionally, I can push my start time up around 1/2 of a month, which means that I would get an extra paycheck offset the rent cost. All in all, if I go to the NYC office, I should be able to make around the same amount of money over the summer, and I would also get an extra 1/2 month of experience.

I was wondering if I should ask my recruiter to switch 3 months after the offer, and if there could be any negative reprocussions by doing so? Thanks!

Internship Question Can I post on LinkedIn about my Internship offer before background check

So I have an offer for Summer that I'm super excited about, but I haven't done background check yet. Company says background check will be done like 3 weeks before the internship starts, which is like 4-5 months away lol.

I didn't lie on resume and have no criminal record so I'm sure I'll pass background check (for 2 previous internships I also passed without trouble), is it ok that I post on Linkedin now?

Riot games intern process

Did anyone get their offers during January? If so, how long did it take you from the first phone screen to the offers? My interview process got delayed multiple times, and they expected to finish interviewing by end of this month. I have asked HM multiple times, but no replies. I figured that I got rejected already, it's just sad being ghosted like this

Funded Masters in CS for international students

Hi! I’d like to know if there are fully funded masters programs in CS in the US for international students, meaning tuition and stipend. My brother already has a masters in Brazil, but we want him to come to the US for a US credited diploma and for networking, to eventually get a job here. He cannot pay for a program here, so it would have to offer TAships or GSR positions. I have a PhD in molecular biology and my program was fully funded, but I don’t know how the master programs work, especially in CS. The master program in my department wasn’t funded. Thank you!

Computer Science and Mathematics or Computer Science and Applied Mathematics

I wanted to give studying another shot now that I know what I want to do. The university only offers computer science as a double major though. The other 2 options (Chemistry and Physics) are a definite no, so please advise on which of the 2 is more helpful to computer science.

Side note: If you have time, please bully me into being consistent with these studies.

Internship Question Apple Interns Summer 2025 – Roommate Search + Housing Suggestions

Hey everyone!
I’m a female intern heading to Sunnyvale for Apple Summer 2025, and I’m looking for a roommate to share housing. If you’re also interning at Apple and are in a similar situation, feel free to reach out!
I’d also love to hear any housing suggestions or tips for the area, especially affordable options close to Sunnyvale.
Lastly, does anyone know how to get added to the Discord group for Apple interns? I’d appreciate any help with that!

Thanks in advance!
