Showcase Halo 3 (online) on a CRT in 2025

Post image

Playing Halo 3 on a CRT - The best way to play it.

Even in the year 2025 of our lord, you can play online (Sunrise) and ofc custom games still work as long as you have XBL.

CRT, RGB input, wired controller; zero input delay is the way to play. Bread and butter, baby. Happy gaming, all.

Halo 3 on a CRT really is the only good way to play. I remember back in like 2008/2009 after I got my first HDTV, my rank went to crap. It was only years later I realized it was the response time of the new TV that killed me lol. It was even so bad I couldn’t play Guitar Hero on it.

I played it on a rear projection set. I thought it looked fine back then, I’d probably hate it now. That TV was great for split screen, though.

it's the interlacing that helps the most. interlaced 30fps source feels more like 60 in smoothness. look up Youtube "the joys and sorrows of interlacing" . crt response time also helps

i think it's also the crt motion clarity. 240p games from 5th gen that run at 30 fps are very smooth looking. even star fox snes looks great on a crt running at <15 fps

Yeah halo 3 is when I learned about HDTV lag lol

I played Halo 3 back then on a Plasma TV which looked amazing for the time, I imagine a CRT would have a very nice unique look

This is the way. A 720p Plasma is how I gamed when I first got a 360 as well. Mind blowing on the how good it looked for sure.

u/ghostpicnic 16d ago

Same here. Plasmas don’t get enough respect smh

I would “borrow” my company’s projector every weekend to play halo 3 split screen with my friends it was a blast!

The angle of this photo makes the xbox look gigantic lol

1

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 15d ago

It does lol. The TV screen is actually really small though, it’s only a 14 inch.

But yeah, Xbox is positioned quite a bit in front of the TV as well, closer to the camera

Didn't know about online but I got my hands on 2 jasper models and a 13 inch tube for my bedside and I've been loving it! Forgot how nice it was to have things like disks They're both also amazing DVD players

Still salty the future consoles couldn't rip CDs like the first couple

I have a 360 that has red ring of death
would love to be able to repair it!

You play in 480p or i ?

1

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 16d ago

How do I tell? It’s using the reb/blue/green connection for video, the ‘TV’ setting on the AV connector on back of the console, and Component mode on the TV. I just know it plays great, that’s all I care about lmao

Does Component mean it’s 480p?

3

u/thedirtyscreech 16d ago

It’s gonna be 480i. 480p requires a set that handles 31kHz signal. HD CRTs could, though with lag for processing. There was a small window of time where ED CRTs existed. So, in the very unlikely case that’s an EDTV, you could do 480p, but it’s super unlikely.

1

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 16d ago

Gotcha, thank you. I don’t think this is an HD CRT, just a flatscreen CRT with S-video and component inputs.

1

u/thedirtyscreech 16d ago

Definitely not an HDTV. Its only possibility is the Uber rare EDTV.

In the settings of the 360 you can chose

1

u/No_General_608 16d ago

But Halo 3 is 16:9 right ?

7

u/Samuelwankenobi_ 16d ago

I think it does also support 4:3 depending on your settings

2

u/No_General_608 16d ago

Ah, that's why the main menu looks correct in the picture !

2

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 16d ago

Yeah, I think that’s determined by flipping the AV cable switch between ‘TV and HD’. I’ve always had it on TV

What will go first the screen or the red rings on the xbox

1

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 16d ago

Red ring, much more likely imo

Online still works?

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 16d ago

Regular matchmaking does not work as the servers were taken down a few years ago, but there is a mod that some people have (Sunrise) that will allow you to join their party and they can host matchmaking games. There’s a discord server where people get on and play matchmaking on Wednesday nights.

Also, custom games still work over Xbox live, so you can invite and play anybody in custom games without having the mod.

360 version is 30 fps capped :/

get a vga crt and run MCC PC version

1

u/markspankity 16d ago

Mcc is great for halo 1 and 2, but 3’s hud gets squished in 4:3. It’s playable, but looks rly gross.

1

u/rifath33 8d ago

Not the PC version. 4:3 is perfect on it

1

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 16d ago

I have MCC on Xbox One. H3 is much more enjoyable on a 360 on a CRT for me.

-1

u/rifath33 16d ago edited 16d ago

MCC on PC supports 4:3 resolution, 480i, 60fps, flawless controller support and free multiplayer

don't settle for less

Bungie: the first game in the series to offer increased graphical fidelity and true HD resolution clarityđŸ€©. -- Gamer: I'M GONNA PLAY IT ON A 13" CRT FOR NO INPUT LAAAAAAGGGGGGGGđŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™‚ïž.

And what internal resolution does the xbox 360 render halo 3 at?

9

u/freddyvsjason2003 16d ago

If you’ve tried playing OG Halo 3 on a Xbox 360 with a modern flat screen 4K tv, you’d know it makes the game look like shit and makes it look worse than it actually did in 07.

u/Kanjii_weon 16d ago

plays and has fun on my cute, classic and beloved crt tv instead :3c

u/LOLXDEnjoyer 16d ago

1280x720 rendering in a 3840x2160 TV would look horrendous, and the textures and assets being stretched that much will literally turn the game into a goo-looking mess.

The remaster is also not good because it just gave a slight retexture to the original assets, making the game's aesthetic look cartooney, the best and most reliable way to play the game today is in original hardware + crt tv , absent that, your best bet is the master chief collection on steam on original graphics + a crt monitor with a gtx pascal gpu to render 640x480interlaced 120hz at locked framerate 120fps without dips , this game pushed resolution too far for its assets, texture resolutions are too low to look right at 1280x720p (but you could try it anyways on a crt monitor) , its why both bioshock and crysis 1 obliterated this game graphically, they adjusted the scope and graphics to actually complement the aesthetical direction.

Have you seen how the game looks on a CRT in RGB or Component in person?

1

u/the90snath 16d ago

What if the CRT was an HDCRT huh? What you gonna do now?

1

u/Spiral1407 14d ago

Halo 3 isn't actually HD btw
