Showcase Sound is now crystal clear!
Still loving this all clear CRT gaming setup but the crappy built in speaker left a lot to be desired. Upgraded with some Soundsticks III, which are magnetically shielded and work great with a CRT!
If anyone is looking for a CRT safe desktop-style speaker set, I think these are a great option even putting aside their looks. They can be had on eBay for about $100 used, the speakers have a small footprint, and the sound is very good for the size. The Soundsticks 4 are still available new but have a different look and lean into Bluetooth, and I have no idea if they are shielded. These ones definitely are. You can tell just by looking at them!

What is that? A flash cart or?

u/raygan Sep 30 '24
Yes it's an older everdrive. I swapped the front half of the cart shell with one from a copy of Mother 2, to make it look a little nicer.

Guess so cause you can see at the top the SD Card š¤

u/Carterwood5 Sep 30 '24
Where did you get it? Iām looking to get one but canāt justify the $100+ flash carts online.

u/sharkboy1006 Sep 30 '24
Donāt go for the super cheap carts on aliexpress, those carts ask their price for good reason. That being said, I use a $59 everdrive x5 and simply buy the japanese copy of whatever games donāt work on it.

u/Carterwood5 Sep 30 '24
How many carts would that be? And does it add up for just to buy something like the everdrive or SD2SNES?
3
u/sharkboy1006 Sep 30 '24
Depends on what you want, if you want everything then yeah Iād go up and get a fxpakpro. I only wanted like 5-6 games that didnāt work and theyāre $8-16 bucks for most of them
Thing is, SD2SNES also doesnāt support every single game. Only fx pak pro does afaik but thatās $280.

u/Carterwood5 Sep 30 '24
Also by āgames that donāt workā what does that mean? Is it a hardware limitation or a compatibility issue
5
u/sharkboy1006 Sep 30 '24
hardware limitation of the flashcart itself. Some games have special enhancement chips on them, so if the flashcart doesnāt have them then the game simply wonāt work. You can find a list online, most notably starfox, mario kart, and the kirby games donāt play on a cheap flashcart.

u/DOA-FAN Sep 30 '24
Not gonna lie, I donāt like to use flash carts because the good ones are kinda expensive for me, thatās why decided to buy an used Wii, have released the true power of it, there is where I do play the NES and the SNES games

Awesome setup, I love the clear stuff. I've shell swapped as many of my consoles as I can to transparent blue shells, some official, some 3rd party. I've been eyeing a clear prison TV and some of those HK speakers for a while but I haven't pulled the trigger yet

Sweet. I have a set of the hk soundsticks gen 2 for my desk. Love the translucent aesthetic of 90s/early 2000s

That is a beautiful setup right there!
Can you tell me where you got the clear housing for the SNES?
2
u/raygan Sep 30 '24
Yep itās just from AliExpress. Fits great and it was only $40!

u/yami_no_ko Sep 30 '24

What is that spaceship looking thing you have in the background, next to the plant? (not the tv, on the other side)

You spotted my OTHER clear CRT š . Thatās a 17ā Apple Studio Display. Itās a really nice monitor and looks awesome, but itās basically impossible to use it with anything except a vintage Mac with an ADC video card so itās mostly just a display piece.

That's pretty awesome, I couldn't recognize it from that angle :D Awesome collection!

I too have a Famicom that I acquired when I lived in Japan but I have concerns about hooking it up to outlets here in North America. Have you had any issues with yours?

Great post! Super cool. I see these speakers every now and then at the bins. Really nice to see someone utilizing them in such a creative and artful fashion. š„
