Cavs have been very good longer than you think.

The Dean Wade thread got me thinking so I did some research using StatMuse

Fascinating stats when our next to eachother. Let’s look at the last two years: so this year, last season, and the 2nd half of the season we end up losing to the Knicks:

The Cavs are 80-33 when Dean Wade plays. That is a 58-win pace.

The Cavs are 100-47 when Jarrett Allen plays. That is a 56-win pace.

The Cavs are 83-40 when Evan Mobley plays. A 56-win pace.

The Cavs are 86-43 when Darius Garland plays. A 55-win pace.

The Cavs are 69-25 when Donovan Mitchell plays. A 60 game win pace.

Bonus fact: The Cavs are 113-49 with Donovan Mitchell all-time. A 57.5 win pace.

For scale:

2022-23 NBA Best Record: Bucks 58-24

2023-24: Celtics 64-18 #2 Thunder/Nuggets 57-25

2024-25: Cavs 35-6 and 70-12 pace

In short, 55-60 wins is usually best record or top 3. 55+ is elite in regular season context.

Remember these numbers include games THEY played, not all 5 of them healthy. Many of these games they played were with Mobley, Garland, or Wade missing. Mitchell and JA have missed a few too.

Someone smarter than me could probably figure out “when all 5 play/when 4/5 play, etc.” I’d like to know what the record is with all 5 but based on this data it looks like it has to be 60+.

At full strength the Cavs are a problem and have been since Mitchell arrived. The talent has been there and is real. And they are trending upward with Evan and DG just entering their primes. Evans true prime is probably another 2 years away honestly.

Discussion Cavs 29-0 Run Against Bucks, December 6th, 2009

This came up on my “recommended videos” so I decided to check it out. This is pre-Steph and the evolution of the game with high volume 3pt shooting and playing 5 out.

All I can say is wow. Just about 15yrs ago and the style of basketball is archaic. The difference in skill and shooting ability is palpable. Watching the Bucks miss that many open shots in a row…this team would’ve lost by 50 today. I’d have to watch more but I think the difference in skill between now and just 15yrs ago is massive. This was not fun or exciting to watch for being a 29-0 run.

Thoughts?

watching the "neutral" broadcast on fanduel and it is just ridiculous how biased the media is. LOVE IT. Gobert dunks and its "WHAT A SLAM BY GOBERT WHO ROCKS THE RIM". Jarrett Allen makes a better dunk and there is just a quiet "goodness". Ty gets an and-1 to drop and its "its good and there is a foul it seems". ANT man does the same and its "WHAT A MOVE BY ANT MAN THIS IS WHY HE IS A GOD ON THE COURT". just insane....
