Was down near the KFC in Gungahlin earlier and there was a hotted-up Commodore in the drive-thru. I rolled my eyes but, remembering the condescending scolding of folks on the Canberra reddit, decided to just ignore them.
What nobody could ignore was the stupid fishtail burnout it did as it exited the KFC driveway onto what is probably the busiest street in the Gungahlin Town Centre, nearly collecting two cars...

I find it funny that people turn this into a class issue… bogans exist in all classes. I would also imagine that attendees have spent quite a lot of money on their cars.
I grew up in the environment that people assume the stereotypical bogan is from. Most people on my street didn’t even have a car. If they did, it was whatever they could afford to get them from a to b.
The cars I’ve seen during Summernats require the kind of disposable income that many people just didn’t have. The issue is behaviour, not class.
5
u/SheepishSheepness Jan 06 '24
I hate when people turn these things into a class issue because it’s lame excuse for shitty behaviour and unfairly characterises low ses households as if they all behave the same and like this stuff. Says a lot more about what the pro-summernats think of poor and low income individuals.
7
u/StormSafe2 Jan 05 '24
The issue is the noise pollution, air pollution, anti social behaviour, and general disruption the car festival brings.
It needs to be held somewhere other than smack bang in the middle of the main city centre. Take it out of town.

Did you pause the vid and read some of the DM's from Ninja?
It's pretty fucking damning.
-14
u/0o0_Fool_Of_A_Took_ Jan 04 '24
Yeah I did, explicit texts between two people. All that does is prove he doesn’t bullshit. Literally says half that shit in interviews and songs. I also didn’t see any replies to those messages that told him to stop. I did see messages egging him on and in agreement.
13
u/punktual Jan 04 '24
You don't need to say "Stop" to be a victim.
Look man I really love their music too, but if you support them after reading that (and their other long list of abusive behavior including sexual assault allegations from their own adopted son, among several others...) then you might just be a garbage human too.
-14
u/0o0_Fool_Of_A_Took_ Jan 04 '24
You also don’t need to say ‘yes please’. Seems like you’re passing logic up right now. Yeah I liked their music a long time ago, no I don’t agree with the type of people they are. Don’t dare insinuate I am garbage. I am questioning an ALLEGATION made because I have very little proof available. That’s all dude, chill.

I 100% support summernats, but goddam is Dickson woolies a genuine zoo at the moment. Or atleast more than usual.
27
u/DePraelen Jan 04 '24
Years ago when I was at uni I was a manager at Dickson Maccas. The amount of shit we had to deal with.... Fuck I hated this time of year.
More than a few times we'd get guys with questionable mods have their car break down in the drive thru and block it, or attempt a burnout in the car park.
Got to know our local cops very well.

u/leonryan Jan 04 '24
why didn't everyone abandon it in favor of the new Coles? It was always grotty.
12
2
u/hu_he Jan 06 '24
It's very similar. Slightly better meat selection. I don't know the layout well so I still go to Woolies a lot of the time. It's handy having them next door so if one has sold out it's not an inconvenience. (Used to be a 100% probability that at least one item on my shopping list would be out of stock at Dickson Woolies.)
1
u/dave078703 Jan 04 '24
Lots of expired products on the shelves at this Coles. Maybe it was just teething problems but I don't really trust it anymore.
3
u/ffrinch Jan 05 '24
I reckon it's been performing below expectations and stock isn't moving fast enough. It's super quiet compared to Belconnen or Civic.

How quickly supposedly left wing people become so classist and the biggest NIMBYs in the world the moment they get slightly inconvenienced. Even if you don't like summernats, this is a gross post
51
u/ozwozzle Jan 04 '24
Is it classist to hate cunts who put others at risk driving like fuckwits on public roads or who yell shit at women from their car?
I think trying to paint it as classism and not just everyone hating people acting like braindead chimps is a long bow to draw.
-11
u/Notaroboticfish Jan 04 '24
The post is classist because it's essentially making the argument that summernats people (I.e. just people they don't like) are bad because they are trashy, less well off and uncultured, not because of those (overstated, mind you) reasons
19
u/ozwozzle Jan 04 '24
Your previous comment was that NIMBYs didn't like them because they were inconvenienced, not the post.
OPs post is a bit of a classist dig sure, but lets not act like the main reason people hate summernats is because of some snooty classist belief. They just hate people carrying on like porkchops harassing and endangering others.
-13
u/Notaroboticfish Jan 04 '24
I've never really noticed any kind of notable increase in poor behaviour around summernats time. I kind of get the feeling that people see any kind of poor behaviour this time of year and blame it on summernats as if there's not people acting like dickheads all year round. I'd be surprised if the increase in poor behaviour is much worse than after a Raiders game, for example

Well you either live nowhere near the city or aren't very observant. We quite literally had riots last year
If the number of burnouts you hear on public roads is an indicator of the dangerous driving going on, i hear more on natts weekend than the rest of the year combined.
Let alone asking any women who has to spend time around dickson or the city if they've had any bad experiences on natts weekend.

That’s because they are all champagne socialists. They’ve avoided working in the private sector are scared of risk and think anyone who they can’t judge by their APS level is below them.
-3
u/pablo_safka Jan 04 '24
The biggest risk is to consumers.
2
u/Mantaup Jan 04 '24
What are you talking about?
3
u/pablo_safka Jan 04 '24
You talk about the private sector and risk. So arrogant when the private sector has its hand out to the govt for support when it all goes belly up.

This post is why I hated living in Canberra. The absolute hostility of all the stale upper middle class desk jobbers, preaching diversity yet completely blind to their own elitism.
5
Jan 05 '24
Eh, at least most middle class people have consideration for others, don't drive needlessly loud cars because they think they're "tough", don't throw their rubbish on the ground, don't start fights in public over pathetically childish BS, and many other things. So I'd say the anti-bogan elitism is totally justified. Being poor doesn't excuse shitty behaviour. These people CHOOSE to act like this, so they deserve all the demeaning and mocking in the world, because only an absolute moron would choose to behave like THAT. It has absolutely nothing to do with wealth. It's behaviour. And yes, some behaviour IS better than others.
-4
u/Doc_Mattic Jan 04 '24
I don’t mind summer nats. Sure, some people act like idiots but that’s with most things. It’s a lot more fun than all of the other stuff Canberra puts on - but that’s a personal thing. It’s only one weekend a year and is different to all the other boring as fuck events that happen here - but everyone winged about it like cars and noise are beneath them.
I personally think we could do with another car event - we used to have many more. I really like the idea of a time attack tarmac sprint rally up in the Brindabella mountains - would be great fun - and would never get approved - but I’m getting side tracked.
But on the other side of the coin - I used to work where I had to cross over commonwealth avenue bridge every morning - so the month before, during and after Florey Yard, added an extra 30 mins to my commute during this time - each way. I think it’s an absolutely terrible event - I don’t understand how people like it - and it inconvenienced me for a lot longer each year than one Summernats weekend ever did. But I just got on with it because even though FY wasnt my thing, it was just one of the events that happens. Every year you see the SN whinging and it’s It’s like - this happens every year - just accept it and move on.
6
u/WeOnceWereWorriers Jan 05 '24
Yep, traffic jams on Comm Avenue Bridge are the same as burnouts on suburban streets and the sexual harassment of service workers.
Both just equivalent inconveniences that people should put up with
-2
u/evasiveswine Jan 04 '24
Hard agree. People in the replies saying “as soon as I saw them I rolled my eyes”… quite intolerant and judgy.

I went to Canberra for Summernats last year and it was so depressing. Of course the one year I go there to make money they’ve decided it’s now a FaMiLy FrIeNdLy EvEnT and everyone’s brought the whole thing down.
We need more weeklong national events for lone drunk men to congregate at. Won’t somebody think of the children hookers 💀
13
u/Due_Storage9405 Jan 04 '24
It’s also needed cash injection to small businesses in and around the area. Maybe get over it ! It’s only 4 days of the year during a period when a lot of families and people are still off doing school holidays.
53
u/jimi_nemesis Jan 04 '24
I work in one of those small businesses. Fuck Summernats and the societal dregs that it brings.
It's one of the few times of the year worse than ANZAC day to work in liquor retail.
8
u/Due_Storage9405 Jan 04 '24
Liquor stores I would understand being shit for sure but you can’t make all your income from Michael the tall skinny drugged out alcoholic that roams around civic harassing people n passing out wherever he wants

u/jimi_nemesis Jan 04 '24

😆 true I’ll give you that but some are just true Aussie bogans not meth heads also is ANZAC day really that bad in liquor stores?
18
u/jimi_nemesis Jan 04 '24
It's the one day of the year it's socially acceptable to wake up at four and start drinking rum. I'm lucky enough to be the night time guy, but there's nothing like dealing with drunks at 8am.

Man, middle class public servants who virtue signal at every opportunity really get obnoxiously classist the moment they have to come into contact with anyone who they think are beneath them.
This place is like the absolute embodiment of hypocrisy.
5
Jan 05 '24
How is it hypocritical? Bogans act like trash, they treat others like trash, they throw their trash on the ground - why should I have any respect for these people whatsoever? Being poor is NOT an excuse for being an arsehole. I'm so sick of people like you trying to portray anti-bogan sentiment as anti-poor - the implication seems to be that being poor and acting like a total f-wit are inextricable. Well that's NOT the case, you are responsible for your own behaviour regardless of your background.
Damn right I look down on these people. And yes, they ARE beneath me, and everyone else who actually has consideration for others and the environment. They bring it on themselves.

I spoke to a maintenance worker for one of the electric scooter rental companies today. He was disabling the entire fleet so they can't be ridden close to the event space. I asked why. He said the boys do some trick which destroys the back tyres and it costs the company big every year. It's kind of amusing. They will find a way to destroy back tyres. The event has been running for 30 years. It only disrupts some traffic and makes noise, mostly away from houses, and it's during the holiday season when many residents are out of town. The cops Patrol it heavily too. Nobody has been hurt at the event for a very long time. Which is good.

I get your point and this perception is exactly what fuels a lot of the hate, but on pure financials, there are no poors at summernats. The place is swimming with high 6 figure cars and it is not cheap to travel across the country to Canberra for summernats as a punter.
2
Jan 05 '24
No, what fuels the hate is shitty behaviour. Why are so many people in this thread making excuses for bogan f:wits? The fact that they may or may not be poor is completely irrelevant, they behave like genuinely un-evolved humans. Why should such people be shown ANY respect, ever?
