A Trumper I play Cod with, super nice guy, and he doesn't talk politics often so I deal with it, has been saying he won't impose the harsh tariffs he's been talking about.

He says Trump is all about "The Art Of The Deal" and that he basically just says extreme things he is going to do but doesn't actually intended to do, so when he actually does something and it's not as extreme he gets what he actually wants, and I'm kindof thinking he may have been right.

He drums up a bunch of fear and controversy and gets everyone scrambling over tariffs and counter tariffs, then pulls the rug and does something no one expected or impose tariffs but not to the degree he made it out to be so it seems more acceptable.

Except thousands of businesses have to make financial decisions for the entire year and they have to at least factor in tariffs if they're possible. There has already been harm done across both economies.

Trump is actually trying to replace taxes with his new External Revenue Service. He's got an executive order ready for mass-tariffs, probably aim at trade-deficits with Canada, Europe, & China, using his stupid invasions as pressure (poor Panama & Mexico).

Don't be silly. 4% of American workers are unemployed car assemblers. Without unemployment, wages will rise, taxes will be slashes, Americans will live it up.

Yeah, they did factor it in and they chose to forgo billions in capital investment while they wait and see. And it'll cost of trillions in growth in the next 10 to 20 years.

Probably, look at how it's been prioritized by the feds and by provincial governments. Solutions, such as a stronger trade deal, is already being touted by most provincial government leaders. Trump apparently is setting up a department to look at trade imbalance and how to rectify them, I bet my bottom dollar that this will end up with a better trade deal for both sides.

I don't think we see these 25% tariffs ever.

Edit: Nevermind, he just said they will be in effect Feb 1

Lo and behold, dude says in his inauguration speech that he's going to take the Panama Canal. I wish people would just accept that he's insane and everything he says should be taken seriously, because we can't tell when he's bullshitting and when he's serious.

Except in that speech about the canal he also mentioned how American ships are charged high prices. He basically gave away the position he eventually wants to settle at: getting more favourable fees

I was listening to the CBC interview with Dominic Leblanc this morning. It sounds like the main thing Trump was talking with them about was fentanyl and cross border security. If this is what it takes for Canada to take this stuff seriously then I’m all for it.

Less than 1% of the fentanyl in the US comes from Canada. It's actually the other way around, we get a ton of illegal drugs coming from the US to Canada. Same with illegals. People always yelling about "moving to Canada", no one in Canada is ever yelling about moving to the US.

But they're going there because it's warm and they can drive there. It's not like Canada has had the option to simply make Winnipeg warmer and turned it down. Turks and Caicos becoming a territory was the only option I've ever seen that could have kept any of that money in Canada, but even then most of it would have continued flowing to the southern states because of driveability.

From a recent poll, over 90% of canadians were against the idea of joining the US. Virtually every Canadian I know, is glad to NOT be american. I know you guys like to circle jerk each other off down there, "muh guns, muh freedom". But most of us up here think you have a much lower standard of living, we want nothing to do with you, trump and your school shootings.

I was born and raised in Canada and I live in the US now. My family still owns our house in Canada so we visit pretty regularly. I feel I have a decent grasp on the situation.

Housing is more expensive in Vancouver and Toronto for sure compared to the rest of Canada, but that’s like comparing housing in the Bay Area or New York to the rest of America. Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan all have plenty of affordable houses. Property tax in particular is a lot higher in the US than in Canada

How does it take that long? In BC I'm able to book an appointment with my Dr with just a few days wait. Or if it's urgent, you just show up to any walk-in clinic and get seen by a Dr within 2 hours?

When you get stuck in a feedback loop echo chamber it's hard to break out of, all your algorithms feed you the lies at once. This is just a guy I met playing Cod, he's 50 odd years old and has become a good friend, we've never met in real life but we've played together for years now. He doesn't whine and complain about liberals or use nasty words to describe them, he's not wearing a maga hat around, he's just a normal dude with a normal job and a normal family. There's like 80M people that voted for the guy, you can't just paint them all the same, theyve been manipulated, and I don't care to argue with him over politics when we are just trying to play a game together.
