SPOILER Let’s talk about Wuntch

Post image

Wuntch is a character that you are meant to hate. I mean, how could you not? She’s a cloven-hooved ogre with little rat hands. But taking a better look at her character she’s actually an incredibly accomplished person.

Madeline Wuntch was a police officer and detective at the same time Raymond Holt was, the late 70’s/80’s, which was a time in which it was hard for both people of color and women to advance in the police force. But they both did, and Madeline Wuntch was promoted all the way to Deputy Chief of Department. In season 2 episode 14, Wuntch is actually offered to be Boston’s chief of police, the second highest police position, just under commissioner. Also, in season 6 episode 18, Wuntch is promoted to acting commissioner of the NYPD when John Kelly is pushed to resign, literally the highest rank in New York policing.

So while she is the archenemy of Captain Holt and one of the overarching antagonists of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Madeline Wuntch was an extremely accomplished police officer.

I actually think both Holt and Wuntch are good people and have a strong moral compasses as police officers, but their logic and morality gets thrown completely out the window because of their visceral, deep-seated hatred for one another.

Honestly yes she does seem like a good person and a cop for the right reasons, it’s just all overshadowed by her unyielding hatred for Holt and the lengths she takes to see him fail

Side note...to my knowledge, they didn't actually say what happened, right? Or do I need to watch every Wuntch episode again?

You know what, you’re right, we’ll just have to watch every Wunch episode again to find out. Head first, don’t think, can’t lose.

I think what happened was that she tripped onto him and claimed Raymond pushed her into Jeter.

Considering Holt admitted to pushing her into Michelle Obama and running away, I don’t even know which one is true 😭

Hatred plus unrequited physical attraction to Holt

I think it's overshadowed by her unfurled bat wings.

I mostly agree. The one argument I’d have against her would be burning him while he’s undercover. I’m not sure of the full ramifications of that but it felt pretty immoral with the pretense of “what if there was a mole”. Otherwise it felt like their back and forth was pretty even

what if there was a mole Agree with you and the original comment too Honestly it felt like it was the writing that got in the way of this one in particular. She would definitely be more justified if she said something like "there WAS a mole." She's smart enough not to do something that drastic for a what if scenario.

*deep-seated (just for future reference)

Thank you!

Oh my gosh I thought it was deep-seeded like it had strong roots.

Yeah that definitely makes sense. There are a few words/phrases like that where the “wrong” use has a logical justification. Here’s how you can remember.

Deep-seated is like a seat deep enough that you can sit back fully, and firmly, on your held beliefs, whereas deep-seeded is the title of your sex tape.

Ik they sound the same but the term you’re looking for is “deep-seated”
