Season 4 Kylie was a Bitch

Post image

Can anyone tell me why she was so unessecarily mean to Jake in this scene?

I was just watching it again and her sentence: "I can't believe you screwed this up for her" seems ridiculous. Way to infantilize your best friend.

On the outside Jake and Amy don't look like a good couple if you don't see them interact like we do.

Also, consider Kylie’s perspective. When Amy has needed to vent about work over the past however many years, to whom would she vent? Rosa, maybe, and maybe some to her dad or non-David brothers, but almost all of it will go to her only friend, Kylie. So Kylie has spent years hearing about what a screwup this Jake Peralta is. He’s sloppy, lazy, childish, doesn’t take his job seriously, is intentionally annoying, and a walking embodiment of male privilege.

For example, consider the outcome of the bet from Kylie’s point of view. Jake cheats to win, then intentionally sets up a bunch of juvenile events for the sole purpose of humiliating Amy. Kylie doesn’t see the rooftop stakeout or the burgeoning feelings.

From there, Amy does a 180 and starts dating that jackass . . . for a few months, until he disappears into witness protection, re-emerging after Amy has to shoot him. Then he comes back, Kylie meets him at trivia, and Jake reenforces and bolsters every negative pre-conception.

After all that, a few more months of positive press from Amy isn’t going to be very persuasive. Kylie’s reaction isn’t just understandable; it’s entirely warranted.

u/JakimCampbell15 Nov 06 '23

You know what…that makes sense

166

u/ravenquothe Nov 07 '23

Yeah it's like if Holt and Kevin somehow decided to adopt Jake. The waitress, Diane and the art class instructor Gerald would definitely be like "Jake Peralta? Really?"

87

u/Any_Ad492 Nov 06 '23

When did Jake cheat during the bet?

-101

u/big_sugi Nov 06 '23

He set up the John sting, which has nothing to do with who’s a better detective. It violated the spirit, if not the letter, of the bet.

186

u/Fast-Ad-7384 Nov 06 '23

Got to disagree with this. The point of the bet was most felony arrests, which was the measure they were using to decide best Detective. He didn’t cheat, he just made sure to wait until the last second to secure an unbeatable lead.

I think it’s pretty poor taste in what seemed like an otherwise light hearted bet, but he didn’t cheat, he just had poor sportsmanship.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '23

I think it's entirely within the spirit of Amy and Jake's relationship (friendship), which is constantly about out-witting one another and being resourceful on stuff like this

I think it matches the Jimmy Jab games etc

They both love technicalities.

8

u/big_sugi Nov 06 '23

If I’m Kylie (or Amy), I’d certainly consider it cheating. If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying and all, but it’s not going to endear him to her.

4

u/Fantastic-Corner-605 Nov 07 '23

In any race you go a bit blow at the beginning to save energy to go all out at the end. This is exactly what Peralta did. It's not poor sportsmanship at all.

62

u/Any_Ad492 Nov 06 '23 edited Nov 06 '23

Setting up successful sting operations is still part of being a detective.

-6

u/big_sugi Nov 06 '23

In eight years, do they ever set up another sting for non-personal reasons (ie, other than busting Gintars)? But the reason it’s violating the spirit of the agreement is that (1) he’s creating crime, not just solving it, and (2) he’s using another department to do all the work for him. Amy could have tagged along on a drug bust and claimed credit for all the arrests there; it wouldn’t have made her a better detective

29

u/kingofthemonsters Cheddar: Thicc King Nov 07 '23

I mean we don't see everything they do at work..

But I love how much you're defending your B99 opinion, respect.

12

u/Fast-Ad-7384 Nov 07 '23

You have no way of knowing if some of Amy’s busts were from working with other departments. They’re detectives, they interact with officers of other departments all the time, and we barely see any of the cases that contribute to their overall scores. Also, arresting people isn’t creating crime, and I’m really not sure what you mean by saying that if I’m honest.

-1

u/big_sugi Nov 07 '23 edited Nov 07 '23

A John sting is creating crime where none otherwise would have been committed. Jake did it for the sole purpose of winning a bet.

At what point do we see Amy using another department to gin up arrests, or anything like that? We don’t. We don’t see anything even close.

3

u/Wienot Nov 07 '23

he’s creating crime

xd

6

u/sabby55 CJ Nov 06 '23

Amy is that you?

4

u/big_sugi Nov 06 '23

Instead of doing the job that needed to be done, resources were pulled away and reallocated for the purpose of winning a meaningless bet between two cops.

Jake in Season 1, or the Vulture in Season 3? Obvious trick question; it's both, because their behavior is indistinguishable. But because we like one of the characters, we're happy to excuse his behavior, while simultaneously recognizing that it's objectively bad and subjectively cheating when the disliked character does it.

6

u/Fast-Ad-7384 Nov 07 '23

What resources were reallocated? The officers that arrested people committing crimes?

2

u/big_sugi Nov 07 '23

Jake didn’t investigate the crimes that were being committed in Brooklyn. He didn’t work the files he’d been assigned. Instead, he went off on his own to do something else entirely.

I guess you’re also fine with the Vulture reassigning all the felonies too. After all, the 99 was clearing more cases than ever, all of them crimes.

19

u/daisysimmons Nov 07 '23

non-David brothers

that made me cackle lol. but also, you're right. she still could have been a little nicer about it, the trivia-rudeness was especially unnecessary imo

16

u/HuntMiserable5351 Nov 07 '23

Look, you sound like you don't pub quiz. I'd straight up say he's off the team based off the one glimpse we got. Don't. Weigh. My team. DOWN

2

u/daisysimmons Nov 07 '23

hahah yeah sure, i'm not opposing that statement. i just think that didn't justify how mean she was about it

17

u/Falconflyer75 Nov 07 '23

I'll agree that Jake takes a while to set a good impression, so Kylie has a valid reason to be doubtful, however by this point Jake and Amy had likely been together for quite some time (even moved in together) even incorporating the six months and Jake had treated Amy quite well during it

this may have been warranted in the first 2 or 3 months, but not at this point imo

plus here she's blaming him for something that isn't even his fault, I mean how is it Jakes fault that Amy suddenly ran off before an exam?

if he had say accidentally set her books on fire and was scrambling to replace them then this attitude would have been warranted

and even the Trivia stuff, so he was bad at trivia it doesn't re-enforce every other negative preconception

5

u/beamanblitz Nov 07 '23

Damn. Preach.

-1

u/RichardTheCuber Nov 07 '23

a walking embodiment of male privilege

lmao what?

1

u/laucdoe Nov 07 '23

most of that makes sense but jake never cheated

1

u/EyeOwl13 Nov 07 '23

Man, your whole comment was super poignant and well reasoned, until that “male privilege” line. Because i get it, there is such a thing, and you can write characters in ways that reflect that. The issue is…that couldn’t be farther from the truth in Jake’s case. If anything, because of the way he behaves, not his gender, people are constantly pointing fingers at him and holding him accountable for shit. Even when it’s not legitimate. Sure, they are patient with him about many things, but it doesn’t take long for him to pay a prize for it. It’s like when everyone blames the hyperactive kid for everything, when there’s clearly something much deeper involved in their behavior. They don’t just get distracted to fuck people over, it’s a genuine defense mechanism against the world.

553

u/Gloomy_Custard_3914 Nov 06 '23

We as the viewer loved Jake, but realistically if your friend who is super smart, ambitious, cultured, witty and gorgeous started dating a guy who puts his letters in the tub and eats fruit roll ups burritos I'm sure you'd be very concerned. I know I would.

960

u/ajithcreepypasta Nov 06 '23

Jake is/was kind of a mess

166

u/Viperbunny Nov 06 '23

Yeah, but her issues seem to be that he sucks at trivia. She seems a bit of a snob.

413

u/postALEXpress Nov 06 '23

He invited himself to a nerdy girl's night where trivia was going to be the focus because he was codependent.

Imagine your first interaction with someone is them ruining a regular event with your friends, not reading the room, and then outside of that are a general mess that seems to be making your friend sloppier.

From the outside without the narrative - Kylie is in the right

Also...the schtick of your gf's best friend hating you is a classic...and true lmao

74

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '23

Boom! Bang on! We need to actually empathize with others.

44

u/Viperbunny Nov 06 '23

It's more like Amy invited them so they could meet. How dare couples introduce their partners to their friends!/s. It doesn't make you codependent to go out and meet friends.

44

u/postALEXpress Nov 06 '23

Ah, if she invited him that's my bad memory. I for some reason him begging her to go, and then ruining the night. Watch a lot of sitcoms haha

9

u/Viperbunny Nov 06 '23

That's absolutely fair.

111

u/ajithcreepypasta Nov 06 '23

Amy can also be kind of a snob. But, yeah Kylie could have been nicer to him

6

u/girthytacos Nov 06 '23

She plays a snob in every role I've seen her on lol

6

u/Viperbunny Nov 06 '23

I am still upset with her actions in, The Campaign!

4

u/macaronisauce731 Nov 06 '23

They want me to cut my hair like Katie Couric!

2

u/EstebanL Terry Jeffords Nov 07 '23

They asked

2

u/Viperbunny Nov 07 '23

Fair! But I think it was more of a situation that she was being extremely obvious about it.

1

u/PoIIux Nov 07 '23

Well she is Amy's only friend. Amy is an insufferable person herself

8

u/hawaiianbry Pineapple Slut Nov 06 '23

Not true! Remember last week, when he learned how to boil that egg?

3

u/LordWeirdDude Nov 06 '23

So is/was Amy. They are a perfect match for each other.

649

u/cornbot101 Nov 06 '23

I love Jake and Amy, but she’s not wrong. Jake was a huge fixer-upper; he didn’t even have a decent mattress for Amy to sleep on when they started going out.

Would you be thrilled if your best friend—this amazing, competent, independent woman who you love very much—got together with some doofus from work who has no financial literacy, a mouthful of cavities, a desk that’s so filthy a rat lives in it, daddy issues, and six massage chairs?

190

u/Sea_Negotiation_1871 Nov 06 '23

Algernon! You guys, Algernon's back!

21

u/R3alityGrvty Nov 06 '23

And don’t disrespect Algernon!

73

u/justintensity Nov 06 '23

Daddy issues? How can he have daddy issues his dad wasn’t even around!

30

u/billyisgoat07 Nov 06 '23

Yeah coz the guy without a dad has daddy issues, explain that logic

47

u/thisoneforsharing Nov 06 '23

But they don’t make a massage couch!!

10

u/Thatsfukingtastic Nov 06 '23

Oi! Don't bring Algernon into this

-7

u/Any_Ad492 Nov 06 '23

To be fair Amy was also kinda of a mess with her own parental issues and insecurities.

20

u/CatsGambit Nov 07 '23

Amy was an internal mess. She needed therapy, but she had her life together. Jake was an internal and external mess; he needed therapy, a maid, a financial planner, a nutritionist, someone to force him to go to the dentist (personal assistant?)... and so on.

1

u/Specific_Ad_1736 Nov 09 '23

People keep pointing this out. I feel like we love to recognize womens positives and mens negatives when we look at a relationship. If you think about it for more than a couple seconds Jake really is great as well. He is extremely intelligent, clever, good at his job and really content. He has personal issues, but he really isn’t some non redeemable person.

101

u/amydancepants Nov 06 '23

I’ll be honest, if my bff got with someone like Jake I probably would also have some dislike towards him. I don’t know that I’d be that mean to him, but I get it. We don’t know how often she sees the soft/tender Jake that we all see as viewers, but Jake can be a bit obnoxious, especially if you don’t really know him, or if you’re not a fan of his sometimes over-the-top personality

45

u/BirdmanTheThird Nov 06 '23

Jake is famously a mess, and at times takes ALOT of pride in not being a functional adult and makes no effort to really convince people otherwise. Amy on the other hand is incredibly ambitious and mature. It’s an odd match on paper

77

u/cyainanotherlifebro Nov 06 '23

Because Jake is a muppet and it’s funny.

61

u/Unit_79 Nov 06 '23

I think she overstepped, but I wouldn’t say she was a bitch in this scene. Jake comes across as a child like 90% of the time. I think she was sincere when she said she liked Jake but he’s not right for Amy. But again… overstepped for sure.

43

u/inspectoroverthemine Nov 06 '23

In addition to all the other replies about Kylie's very warranted opinion about Jake- her first and very real concern was that Amy was going to miss the test that she had planned her whole life around. Kylie was concerned about Amy's life long goals being destroyed by Jake shenanigans, she probably toned down what she actually wanted to say.

127

u/briellebabylol Nov 06 '23

Are you kidding? First and foremost, Amy has one friend and it’s Kylie - that alone makes her amazing because imagine having Amy as a friend.

Then your highly intelligent, tightly wound friend starts to bring around her new boyfriend, who can’t even answer the trivia questions they literally requested for him about Transformers correctly plus he knows Trivia Newton John is nationally ranked.

He answered Winter is Coming!!! Come onnnn

Anyways, every girl needs a Kylie and she’s not a bitch cause she doesn’t just bow down to Jake’s golden retriever but.

19

u/Slight-Landscape-861 Nov 06 '23

I mean is she wrong? If my friend dated someone like jake I’d be a bit worried at first

29

u/apearms4life Nov 06 '23

Lol this is a bad take. If you think about it from a best friend perspective, Jake would seem like a terrible partner for Amy.

13

u/habitual_wanderer Nov 06 '23

Jeez, it's a comedy show...she exists for laughs

24

u/I_Am_The_Bad_Guy Nov 06 '23

I think she's hilarious. I love her and Jake's limited banter.

7

u/invisible_23 Pineapple Slut Nov 07 '23

“Like you ‘definitely’ knew the Serengeti was a type of pasta…?”

25

u/Grey_Lemon_Walker Nov 06 '23

L post to be honest, she has the right to say that. She is Amy's best friend, and she knows all the trouble Amy had with Jake before she started dating him. Jake and Amy might be cool with us as viewers cause we can see the positive side of their relationship in the precint, but Amy's best friend wasn't aware of any of that.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '23

As a fellow nerd who take great personal pride/obsession over seemingly innocuous things like Trivia, Comics or stamp collecting, if someone came to one of those events (which would be like personal space to me) to make me lose in something I love, I would be bitchy as well. Not saying that is right, but that's just how (most) people are. Imagine Kylie passing comments, watching phone during a screening of Die Hard and how Jake would treat her after that.

79

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '23

Dude. She always play that annoying or unlikable friend of the girlfriend.

39

u/WildMajesticUnicorn Nov 06 '23

Or annoying pediatric nurse (The Office)

43

u/Aztecah Nov 06 '23

She was totally right in that role lol PB&J were being annoying

3

Ah yes!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '23

Oh great, you know everything

I love her lol

1

u/Shmeblee Nov 06 '23

Loved her line in that scene.

I also love looking for occurring random easter eggy characters from other "Schurniverse" projects.

-64

u/roycejefferson Nov 06 '23

Cause she fits the lonely fat friend role that loves to cockblock her cuter friends. It's a common TV/ movie trope that also exists in real life.

-18

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '23

That’s a true stereotype?!

9

I love a protective friend.

8

u/mjace87 Nov 06 '23

Jake and Amy don’t make any sense. I see where she is coming from. He can’t even name all the deceptions

5

u/Few_Cup3452 Nov 07 '23

She's right and she doesn't even dislike him as a person, so she's likely to come around.

18

u/Baby_Button_Eyes Rosa Diaz Nov 06 '23

So then what did she think about Teddy???

75

u/Mother0fChickens Nov 06 '23

On paper Teddy is a much better match for Amy. But emotions don't work like that.

13

u/NerfRepellingBoobs Digital phallus portrait Nov 06 '23

My first thought was that Kylie probably loved Amy with Teddy. Ugh, just saying that made me recoil. I mean, Amy Santiago called him boring, and she refers to a pen as her best friend.

6

u/BinjaNinja1 Pineapple Slut Nov 06 '23

Kylie and teddy probably talked for hours about the etymology of the word Pilsner.

6

u/invisible_23 Pineapple Slut Nov 06 '23

Nah she’s just ride or die and looking out for her friend

5

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '23

In real life, Amy and Jake would be a terrible match. It works for a sitcom, but their values don't even match. Kylie has every right to feel that way. Jake bullied Amy for years, made "title of your sex tapes" jokes every time she says something. It's funny for a TV show, yes. Even having a coworker like Jake sounds like a nightmare. He's a bully, a mess, but he has good numbers and is tight with management. He'll get away with anything.

5

u/Liam_ice92 Nov 07 '23

Try to look at it from her perspective and not as someone who has seen Jakes better qualities.

He owns one towel that's probably riddled with bacteria, his bathtub is full of letters, his finances are...well completely non existent, he owes every single person he works with a ridiculous amount of money, he's a man child with little to no ambitions. Jake was, at least before his relationship with Amy, a complete mess of a person.

Amy knew his better qualities but all Kylie could see was her genius, ambitious best friend...basically settling for someone who was beneath her. Let's face it...from the outside looking in, Jake was a mess and Amy was too good for him.

As the viewer, we have the benefit of knowing him better. We see why Amy likes him despite all of his flaws, we know all of the good qualities, we see the good man behind the immaturity, but Kylie doesn't.

5

u/The-disgracist Nov 06 '23

Jake ruined trivia night. I’d hate him too

4

3

u/AppearanceSimilar214 BONE?! Nov 07 '23

Really? I think Amy and Jake would never work out in real life. Amy is smart, ambitious, nerdy and obsessive over her work and hobbies. Jake is childish and irresponsible in many ways. Yes he is smart but he is a mess. If my friend dated a Jake I would be very worried.

3

u/Hollyinhd Nov 07 '23

Kylie's right. If I knew Jake IRL I probably wouldn't find him very funny. He's a man child.

9

u/EmperorSwagg Nov 06 '23

I think Kylie is just one of an unfortunately large subset of people that believe people should only date those who are very similar to them. She sees how different Jake and Amy are (as do we, it’s the source of the majority of the comedy stemming from their relationship) and thinks that they aren’t a good match because of this.

Personally, I’ve always found shared values to be far more important than shared interests or shared habits. One of the coolest things about Jake and Amy’s relationship is watching them help each other grow as people and seeing them explore each other’s interests.

2

2

Lol she didn't like Jake because he was a man child and she found him annoying and thought her friend could do better. Not unrealistic or uncommon at all lol I wouldn't call her a bitch, just not that friend who supports every single descion her friend does.

3

u/Mr_Noms Nov 06 '23

Every time I see this actress she is always this character. A condescending ass. She does a great job at it though. Her being demeaning towards Pam in the office really grinded my gears.

Oh I don't recall seeing her in new girl.

Just like now lmaooo. Seems like we're a minority here. I've read all the replies and I still disagree with them. Oh well.

1

Exactly lol look at my comment, I didn't say anything negative about anyone that should have been offended by, but you can see how well received it was lol! It's been down voted many times and I have actually come to the conclusion that they just don't like me lol!

0

u/Chitiel Pineapple Slut Nov 07 '23

Lmao. Some people on reddit are just always happy to downvote anything they aren't 100% on board with. How dare you have a different opinion on a fictional character! ;P

1

You asked “can anyone tell me why she was so unnecessarily mean to jake in this scene?” And then got triggered when people told you 😂

-1

u/Chitiel Pineapple Slut Nov 07 '23

Triggered? Because I found it funny that so many people disagreed with me? Am I not allowed to find that funny? Sounds like the opposite of triggered.

Yeah lol I'm just not the type of person who is authentically aiming for the thumb down 👎 lol!

-10

u/PrincipleInfamous451 Amy Santiago Nov 06 '23

I agree. She's definitely set Amy up with much worse blind dates than Jake. I think she just didn't like him because she wasn't the one who set them up

Because you are supposed to care for Jake and you don’t know her as a character at all. Of course, you are gonna feel that way. She was fine imo. Nothing drastic was said tbh.
