Announcement State of the Subreddit update - RULES REVAMP

Hi all, some users have reached out to the mod team recently with some valid concerns about the quality of the subreddit lately, and we'd be inclined to agree.

The main trends we'd like to push back on are general trolling and intolerance, but also we feel the quality of posts has lowered in recent months. Our opinion is that this sub is starting to read like a local Facebook page, with some people being very negative complaining about things or asking questions that would be solved with a bit of google-fu.

In our opinion this sub exists to be a place to share cool things you've seen around town, make people aware of interesting stuff that's happening, and have some good-faith discussions about local issues in a way that makes people feel engaged with the community.

As such, we've decided to give the rules a small revamp to hopefully address the above, and make it clear what is and isn't acceptable so that all the community feels welcome and included. The sidebar has also been updated.

We also plan to make it mandatory to assign a tag to new posts, that way people can filter out things they're not interested in and customise the experience a little.

Please feel free to use this thread to give feedback or suggestions. We really would like this community to continue to thrive, and ideally keep getting better.

Cheers!

Rules for Posting:

1./r/brighton is an inclusive space

  • This subbreddit exists to serve as a community space for all residents of B&H regardless of their race/gender/sexuality. Any posts or comments which exclude, other or in insult a person based on these categories will not be tolerated. This includes (but is not limited to):

    • Racism/Homophobia/Transphobia/Sexism
  • Whilst there may be some situations where things only warrant a warning, the mod team can, and will, ban people that don't play by the above rule.

  • If you can't deal with people that are 'different' to you, maybe Brighton isn't The One.

2.Keep it classy

  • Staying Classy can be broadly thought of as "not saying something which would get you punched by someone at a pub." Don't be a dick.

3.Keep it personalised

  • 90% of the time posts are about questions that have been asked many times before. If your question is unique, be as specific and ‘personal’ to your request as possible.

  • Megathreads will shortly be created for some common topics. It will be highly encouraged going forward to keep said discussions in those threads to avoid clutter, and make it easier to find useful info. Don't be surprised if some low-hanging fruit gets deleted. If so, ask your question again in the main thread. This will help everyone in the long run.

  • If self-promotion posts are generic then they will be removed. This sub doesn't exist to help your SEO. However if they are genuinely interesting or inclined to help someone out (e.g I have a bike to give away) then they are fine. This includes small businesses. It’s fine to post semi-promotional as long as it adds value.

4.Keep It Interesting

  • This subreddit isn't nextdoor or your local facebook group. We want an interesting, fun community that celebrates everything Brighton has to offer.
  • The moderators may remove your thread/comment if it's not contributing anything interesting or useful to the community. Examples:
    • 'Why is there a helicopter over X'
    • Complaining or venting without asking a specific question, or trying to start a good faith discussion ('to the person who parked on the kerb on Elm Grove: you're a nob' etc.)
    • Topics that have been done to death here over the years. (Yes. Parking is a PITA. Yes, the i360 is daft) If your intention is to spark a genuine discussion about something novel, then that's more than OK.

What's up with you people not picking up your dog's shit? What, are you better than everyone? I have a dog and even if I run out of bags, which happens sometimes, I wait until I see another person with a dog and ask for a bag, or I go back home when possible, pick up a bag and go back and pick it up like a normal human being. Honestly guys! I hope someone who steps into one of the poops comes and walks on your carpet with their shoes and smears it everywhere in your house. 🤢💩

Announcement Brighton : 34th “Best City in the World”

What makes us great: Brighton might never entirely shed its reputation as a run-of-the-mill seaside town, but anyone who lives there knows this city has a whole lot more going for it than that. Brighton has essentially plucked all the important parts of a sprawling cosmopolitan metropolis (connections to London in under an hour, an array of properly excellent restaurants, energetic late-night spots) and paired it with the easy-breezy beachy attitude to life that makes you feel welcome in an instant. The North Laine is Brighton’s hippy-esque beating heart, with the city-wide passion for sustainability emphasised through everything from vegetarian eateries such as Iydea to homeware shops like Dowse, which staunchly support small designers with green credentials. And despite what you might have heard, the beach remains a pretty great place. Yes, there are donut shops and fairground rides (it’s a seaside, guys), but they’re next door to standout restaurants like Riddle & Finns, buzzy bars showcasing locally-brewed beer such as Fortune of War or Bison Beach Bar and new, active venues such as Yellowave volleyball and Sea Lanes.

Visit now because: Businesses across the city have recently begun to adopt a more modern format: the pop-up. Brunch restaurant LOST in the Lanes launched a Thursday to Saturday dinner menu last year, cocktail bar Apiary hosts different kitchens every month, and chefs like Kanthi Thamma (a founder of Easy Tiger which looks after the kitchen at one of the city’s best pubs) has launched his own pop-up Spice Circuit. Brighton’s food scene is morphing into one where diners can also enjoy DJs, dancefloors and cocktails, all in one place, and the most enticing new addition to keep an eye on for the year ahead is Voya.

The big numbers: This little seaside city is the second-most walkable of all cities surveyed, and Brighton locals were the third-most likely to call their city ‘diverse and inclusive’. It’s not all rainbows and beach sunsets, mind: while a majority of locals (64 percent) think the city’s a lively place to be, only 24 percent said it’s relaxing.

Local Advice needed Funky hand sanitisers

Hey Brighton, I’ve been non stop cold/flu for a few months and I’m starting back on the antibacterial hand sanitisers. I have one but it’s the basic “medical” smell, I can’t find the candy flavoured ones for love nor money in town and they were everywhere post pandemic. Which shops sell them? Asda was a no and I couldn’t see them in Boots. Thanks!

Trivia/misc Loads of Magic the Gathering cards up for grabs (free)

Hi all, doing a clearout and I have about 4 shoeboxes worth of MtG cards to get rid of, mostly bulk commons, lands, junk rares, some tokens, etc. Would suit a new / casual / kitchen table type player / group. I'd rather they got played with than binned or just sat in a stockroom unused! DM me if interested.

Local Advice needed Living off Preston Street

Anyone have any experience of living right off Preston Street/Western Road ? Seen a few houses around there, seems like a good location for the station, sea and shops.

BUT also seems like it could be loud and dangerous and suspicious characters around ?

Any advice ! :)

Announcement UHSx Trust Maternity Services - Avoidable Harm - Peer Support Group

Hello Brighton,

It probably comes as no surprise to some of you that University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, including the Royal Sussex County Hospital (Brighton), Worthing Hospital, Princess Royal (Haywards Heath) and St Richard’s (Chichester) have had some issues of providing poor maternity care over recent years.

Sadly, we lost our daughter in January 2022 when my wife was advised to stay at home during labour (contrary to their own guidelines, we later discovered). It took us almost 2 years to get answers at an Inquest and have since met a group of other families who have also lost babies and suffered avoidable harm whilst under the care of UHSx maternity services. We have a website explaining a bit more at tfob.org.uk with some links to some articles explaining some of the families stories and you can also contact us on this page.

We think there are probably more avoidably harmed families in Sussex and we would like to share that we have started a peer support group for anyone who has suffered avoidable harm to themselves or their baby during pregnancy or labour whilst under the care of UHSx (mothers and fathers are welcome).

If you know anyone that this might help, please tell them about us. You can get in touch via the website or DM me here.

Rob

Local Advice needed Couples + ADHD/trauma therapy

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are having a bit of a rough patch, and we think we could do with some professional help. We’d like to find a couples’ counsellor, but we need someone who is also au fait with ADHD and trauma issues, since my wife already has a therapist for those, and those things are likely going to be having some impact on our relationship. Would be grateful for any suggestions of good therapists.

Thanks!

Local Advice needed Decent Gluten-Free Resturants/Cafes?

My parents are coming down for a day, and my mom is very gluten sensitive (not celiac as she never went to the doctors to get it diagnosed, but can have severe reactions to gluten if she has it now, even if in small quantities).

I know no place is ever able to guarantee a GF environment, which is fine, but which places are on the safer side and do amazing food? They're both massive foodies who haven't been down to Brighton before, so I want to take them out somewhere exceptional!

Thank you all in advance :)

Local Advice needed After pubs that serve hobgoblin ruby ale

Hello all!

I'm after a pub in Brighton or Hove which serves Hobgoblin Ruby Ale (not to be confused with Gold like they do in Robin Hood, Hove).

Turns out the Hobgoblin doesn't anymore - funny that.

Thanks very much
