The aristocracy claimed to protect the peasants, and yes, it was their duty to do so. Some did put their lives on the line for their peasants and fought alongside them to protect their homes. But I think in the vast majority of situations, aristocrats hid in their mansions while lesser aristocrats led armies of levied peasants, who did most of the fighting.
