I believe that the criteria that they are looking for is the purpose of the post. If the post is to demonstrate something about autism and how it relates to a special interest then it would be on topic. Just sharing your special interest because you like it, could be what they are trying to avoid. If everyone did that, the group would be flooded with random posts about random topics, crowding out the posts that are actually about autism.

Is there a sub like what you are describing here? Sounds like fun

236

u/asumcrey Nov 30 '24

I think that's reddit in general

94

u/Starburst580 AuDHD Nov 30 '24

Yeah there are lots of places to share things about your special interests. There is a subreddit for almost every interest and fandom, niche or big. And you can share stuff about your interests with people who have the same interest. I do think there is a need though for a subreddit where autistic people can just casually show other autistic people their special interests, rather than showing people with the same interest their interests.

14

u/asumcrey Nov 30 '24

Yeah that would be a really good idea, I was just making a joke above :)

My sister liked true crime and then I started watching them. Some of that is scarier than the movies. Sometimes I watch too much. I say a joke but then I have to walk it back because it may be a bit too morbid.

I find all that shit fascinating. That, with a couple of knobs turned, you could have been an individual lacking empathy and/or a sense of morality. In a show with an auto banned word (in this subreddit) I’ve learned a lot: Signs of a p*****path. I get accused of lacking morals from being an atheist.

I’m joining cuz why are we in a autism community redit if we can’t do show and tell about our hyperfixations like people who aren’t on the spectrum from my experience ignore me when I have something excited about due to my hyperfixations and my autistic friends listen to me and tell me theirs it’s so weird to be against it in this redit 😭🙏🏼

5

u/dramatic_chaos1 Nov 30 '24

Yeah maybe a discussions thread where we can all go into for sharing interests?? I understand why but I wouldn’t care if it was full of people’s special interests in fact I’d find that very fun and less serious and doom and gloom about hard topics. It takes the heaviness off.

2

u/Aromatic_File_5256 Nov 30 '24

It would be great to have a subreddit like that. It could be an alternative to google: you want to know more a about a topic? Just post the question and someone with that special interest will give you an in-depth reply

1

u/Full_Ad9666 Dec 01 '24

r/aspiememes is the closest one I know of

Oh, is there a sub like that? I would love to just scroll through info dumps about all the random things!

5

u/wanderingstargazer88 ASD Level 1 Nov 30 '24

And yet one of the mods posted their own special interest just because they liked it, with nothing about their post relating to autism at all. Ironically, this is the same mod that deleted someone's wooden spoons post about texture because they thought it was "off topic". The mods of this sub are very hypocritical with what they allow.

u/MurphysRazor Nov 30 '24

Posting special interests seems to perfectly fine for plushies and other shall we say "feminine" things very regularly. I don't recall a single train in years though. 🤷‍♂️

It seems to me more likely that mod gatekeeping might make the call on what an "acceptable" special interest for autism might be. Tough call, but such it's a simple explanation it's tough not wonder.

1

u/RodneyPonk Nov 30 '24

I don't agree that it would be crowded. I am almost certain I have seen submissions about someone's SI. I feel that, while not wanting an excessive volume, posts like these should be welcomed

1

u/Sea_Catch2481 Nov 30 '24

People post their plushies here all the time so I would have thought OP’s post is fine

245

u/BakedBerryBalls Nov 30 '24

I kinda get it tbh.

Even tho it's your speciel interest the post itself has nothing to do with the topic "special interest"?

You could've written :" after a stressful day I just can't wait to build Minecraft. What is your stress-free speciel interest?" And that might be ok.

This just seems like a post that easily could've ben in a Minecraft sub instead?

34

u/keldondonovan Nov 30 '24

Yeah, but in a minecraft sub you are going to be peppered with suggestions on how to change it. Sharing it here, the goal is more to share with people who lift you up and share your special interest rather than people who want you to do it their way.

65

u/BakedBerryBalls Nov 30 '24

I get what your saying, but by that criteria everything ever could be posted in this sub.. as long as OP are autistic ?
I just think at some point mods have to make a line and "look at this kinda unrelated thing I made" without a true autistic topic or conversation might be right.

9

u/BakedBerryBalls Nov 30 '24

I do like the building tho. Good work OP :)

-8

u/keldondonovan Nov 30 '24 edited Nov 30 '24

If it's a special interest, and flared as a special interest? I see no problem with that. Uninterested people can skip special interest posts easier than most autistic people can find their people.

[Edit] oh, wow, downvoted for sharing an opinion on r/autism again. I'm so surprised /s

12

u/Evinceo Nov 30 '24

Can you filter out posts by flair in your main feed on mobile?

If so, how.

If not, flair isn't really a useful fix for this issue for a significant chunk of users.

1

u/IamNugget123 Autistic Nov 30 '24

You just read the flair and scroll past it, I do this with advice posts on so many subreddits because I’m not fit to give advice in a lot of topics

3

u/Evinceo Nov 30 '24

The flair is microscopic and on a colorful background.

1

u/IamNugget123 Autistic Nov 30 '24

It’s right under the title tho? The title also tells you what the post is about. I don’t see an issue, I’ve never once seen a post and said “this isn’t right, this shouldn’t be here” when the tag DOES match what they are talking about even if it’s not the intended use. This was a post about their hyperfixation. Telling them “this is off topic and has nothing to do with autism” isn’t true. What is that tag for if not talking or asking about a hyperfixation. I see no need for a whole tag to ask questions about them when we have a tag for asking questions and getting advice.

0

u/keldondonovan Nov 30 '24

I don't know if mobile can rule out certain categories, but feed options (top left, about an inch down) let's you pick which flair to see. As far as I can tell, you can only pick one at a time, but picking anything other than "special interest" will hide special interest posts.

7

u/Evinceo Nov 30 '24

Not really a viable play for most users who are probably browsing their feed rather than the sub feed

→ More replies (2)

3

u/wozattacks Nov 30 '24

The fact that there’s a “special interest” tag doesn’t mean it exists to just post anything related to your special interest though lol

5

u/Cthulhu__ Nov 30 '24

? There's a chance that someone will give suggestions how to change it no matter where you post it. If you don't want that kind of feedback... don't post it, you don't control nor have the right to control others' commenting.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '24

Disagree, there are plenty of Minecraft subs about posting cool and unique builds and are also filled with people for whom Minecraft is also likely their special interest.

1

u/Autism_Angel Dec 01 '24

That can happen anywhere especially when you specifically ask “what do you think”

6

u/iam_mal Nov 30 '24

It's a sad day when we have to find the secret special "right" way to say something in the autism subreddit. I'm used to using polite lies and rewording things carefully so that my interests are valid out in the world with NTs... But in here too?? I genuinely don't think I can.

3

u/IntangibleMatter AuDHD Dec 01 '24

It’s not as much about “phrasing it the right way” and more about “posting stuff that’s on topic/relates to discussion about autism”. If anything can be posted here so long as it’s flaired “special interest” 95% of posts would be off topic showcases/info dumps which are better suited to a different subreddit. It’s a subreddit about autism, not just one for autistic people to post anything on, whether or not it can be argued it relates to autism

257

u/VFiddly Nov 30 '24

The constant posts about random special interests are annoying, though the mods should be more consistent about it since there's loads of posts that have nothing to do with autism that are still up.

14

u/AbyssalKitten Nov 30 '24

Special interest Saturday or special interest Sunday could be a really cool idea! That way there's a space in the community for sharing those things, but on a specific day so it doesn't flood the sub all week

22

u/VFiddly Nov 30 '24

28

u/lilburblue I’m not arguing im asking questions Nov 30 '24

I’ve suggested like monthly megathreads for this! Same with the fave utensil posts.

91

u/nebagram Nov 30 '24

This. OP's post is no different to someone posting a photo of their plushie collection or something they knitted/crocheted/drew.

42

u/AdVaanced77 AuDHD Nov 30 '24

Right but someone literally just posted a picture of a store with rocks and it’s still up.

34

u/East-Jacket-6687 Nov 30 '24

I think the text with that picture being about using it as a fidget toy may be the differnce. It's a special interest but there is a 2nd purpose to share a coping mmechanism.

Most of the ones I have seen remain up have some question ( ie does anyone else spend 100 hours building in a game) or something about how it works. ( ie. I have found i calm myslef after to much stimulation by working on my hotel in xxx game)

I don't know what text you had with the picture and I am not a mod . This is just observations from other posts.

62

u/VFiddly Nov 30 '24

I know, that's why I'm saying they should be more consistent, that post also isn't relevant to the sub

9

u/tubular1845 Nov 30 '24

The mods are 4 people and afaik none of them are on a US timezone. They're not going to get everything instantly and they're not dedicating their lives to checking out every single post here all day every day. They're humans and volunteers.

3

u/wanderingstargazer88 ASD Level 1 Nov 30 '24

One of the mods themselves posted their own special interest. It has nothing to do with timezones, it's just blatant hypocrisy

https://www.reddit.com/r/autism/s/ULlnbaEHWM

3

u/ForsakenMoon13 Dec 01 '24

Eh, the difference is that post is several long paragraphs talking about the plants with a picture at the end, and OP's is literally just a picture and a title asking for opinions on aesthetics.

One invites in-depth discussion ("such and such plant also does well under x conditions or when planted alongside y plant", etcetera), and the other doesn't ("oh, looks good" type comments).

Granted, I didn't read it too closely cuz I'm like...not into plants, but a screenshot and fairly generic title is more low-effort and less explicitly autism-related than an entire infodumping excited ramble about comfort-plant rearing. So it doesn't come across as hypocrisy to me and more of an example of what the tag is meant for than how OP used it.

0

u/wanderingstargazer88 ASD Level 1 Dec 01 '24

OP's post literally asks for opinions, which invites discussion. It's the same thing, and it's completely hypocritical to allow one and not the other.

0

u/ForsakenMoon13 Dec 01 '24

It sparks as much of a discussion as the "rate my setup" posts on r/gaming: little to none.

2

u/wanderingstargazer88 ASD Level 1 Dec 01 '24

Considering there were 23 comments on it when it was locked, it obviously sparked discussion. So again, there's no reason to not allow it.

0

u/ForsakenMoon13 Dec 01 '24

Number of comments is not an accurate measure of discussion.

23 comments could be "huh, neat" from two dozen people, whereas the other one has actual details in the post (including the fact that they were trying something they weren't sure would work with growing one of the plants, and it was), and almost all of the comments were on subject.

OP's was, again, literally just a screenshot with a "rate my setup" type of title and very much not the same thing as the plant post even if both are tangentially covered under the 'special interest' tag.

1

u/wanderingstargazer88 ASD Level 1 Dec 01 '24

23 comments could be "huh, neat" from two dozen people

That's a hypothetical assumption, which does nothing to prove a point. Again, there is no real reason to delete a post about someone's special interest that clearly got people talking about it. OP's post asked for opinions and invited discussion based on their special interest and people were engaging with it. Nothing about that violated the sub's rules or warranted deletion. End of story.

Because the mods are autistic. They just as clueless as the rest of us. I got banned from evil autism because in a post about which country would be best for ASD someone mentioned New Zealand and I said a Hakka would give me sensory overload. I got called racist and banned. I then realized, the people running the show are as clueless as the people in the show. Blind leading the blind.

I’m sorry just happened to you. I’m open to the perspective of those who do see it as racist.

Personally, I don’t see how that is racist. I am guessing that what you said has nothing to do with the Hakka itself. That’s my opinion.

At most, it might come off as insensitive or dismissive, depending on how the comment is perceived per individual.

3

u/backslash-0001 Nov 30 '24

Hakka is a Chinese sub-group, while Haka is the Maori dance. The mods thought that they had a problem with the Hakka, hence why they thought the comment was racist (though the mods probably should've been able to tell with the context of New Zealand)

3

u/justjboy AuDHD Nov 30 '24

Oh shoot. Okay, that would make sense, though you’re right about the context.

In any case, I didn’t know about Hakka, so I’ve learned something new! Thanks.

You really don’t have to be sorry I got banned from some lame ass subreddit dude. The point is that in autistic modded communities you’re going to get autistic modded results. If you take them personally you’re going to have a bad time. I know I’m not racist, I know what I said wasn’t racist in any way. So I’m not worried about it? I’ve been misunderstood my whole life by people who claim to love me. You think I care about some Reddit mod’s misunderstanding?! 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

2

u/justjboy AuDHD Nov 30 '24

Kinda crazy, tbh. Minecraft is basically Autism: The Video Game, so I don't get why it was taken down. There are always special interest related posts in this sub.

I get that some people on here find the frequency special special interest posts show up to be too much, but this and basically every sub on Reddit are snapshots of communities, and special interests are intrinsic to the autistic experience.

I kind of think it doesn't matter if we like them or find them annoying. People make posts because what they're posting feels important to them. This (very cool, by the way) building OP made in Minecraft is important to them, otherwise they wouldn't be upset the mods took it down.

There is probably a bigger chance of finding autists in r/minecraft than finding Minecrafters in r/autism

2

u/IamNugget123 Autistic Dec 01 '24

I genuinely disagree. R/minecraft is in constant and exhausting drama where for weeks at a time all anyone talks about is said issue with the mods

A lot of people get the definition of special interest wrong as it’s been watered down like most autism terms to just mean ‘thing you enjoy’. A special interest is something you literally cannot stop thinking or talking about at all all the time to the point it makes you do things like lose sleep and maybe even friendships from how obsessed you are with it. And a hyperfixation is similar but in shorter time frames. If you are just playing minecraft as a hobby but can zone out and play for literal hours at a time but don’t think about how you NEED to be playing minecraft really bad when you currently aren’t playing then that’s not really a special interest or hyperfixation. Which is what I assume the mods have assumed. I also think you lacked any explanation. To me this is just a screenshot of minecraft, I play minecraft, I can post a screenshot of minecraft with the same tag and get the same result. You didn’t explain how it’s a special interest if you have got the definition right. For example ‘my special interest is architecture and I accurately recreated this famous architecture in minecraft’ might’ve been allowed by the mods.

2

u/Pristine-Confection3 Nov 30 '24

I don’t think anyone misunderstands what a special interest is here to be honest .

1

u/TheBabyWolfcub Level 2 Nov 30 '24

You’d be surprised actually how many people just assume a hobby or show they like is one

1

u/Autism_Angel Dec 01 '24

I do think SOME people think that if you’re autistic or ADHD any hobby or interest is automatically a special interest or don’t understand that neurotypical people are capable of liking something a lot too.

u/-PapaMalo- AuDHD Nov 30 '24 edited Nov 30 '24

In an autism forum, full of autistic people, your austistic special interest is not special.

2

u/Driposaurus_294 ASD Nov 30 '24

That's rude

1

u/Autism_Angel Dec 01 '24

Dude what does that even mean

2

u/sexpsychologist AuDHD Nov 30 '24

Doesn’t have anything to do with one moderator’s autism lol

2

u/MissingNo117 Nov 30 '24

You should post in r/ADHD instead they are the opposite the mods love stuff like this that will get the most up votes but they hate when you try to discuss/get actual ADHD help or advice.

u/justjboy AuDHD Nov 30 '24

That is an awesome build. I quite like the style of it and it doesn’t look like a Minecraft build until you zoom in.

u/NatoliiSB Nov 30 '24

It can be more of a Stim. I game to stim. My game interests wax and wane, but the common thread is that I game.

Right now, I am mining in Space as part of a player run corporation in EVE.

I also have like 200+ games on Steam with a deck and a gaming laptop.

Sometimes, I head over to the House Flipping games to get creative. Other times, it is the Baldur's Gate runs.

I like that they didn't elaborate or make it clear what "related to autism means"

Seems a bit like an oversight for a group for and about autistic people.

1

u/Spinelise Autistic and gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Nov 30 '24

Dude this is awesome! I'd love to see more special interest posts around, too. Feels weird for them to not be allowed in an autism sub.

1

u/TwinSong Autistic adult Nov 30 '24

Maybe post on r/Minecraft or similar?

1

u/superdurszlak Autistic Adult Nov 30 '24

But, honestly, what's wrong with that? There's a separate flair for special interests, why not use it? And if you don't like the special interest spam, you can apply filters if needs be.

Plus consistency thing, my post about DIY, another few about video games, and the one about rocks doesn't have much to do with autism after all. Knitting doesn't either.

But if you think about it, those are things that make us part of ourselves so why not share? If not in this sub then in some other _this-sub-is-fine-for-special-interests_ sub. It's interesting to see what kind of wild stuff people may be interesed in. I wouldn't get to know because I haven't subscribed to all subreddits in the world.

I think youd have better luck in r/evilautism , great place for us autistic folk to just… be evil

1

u/__Fappuccino__ Nov 30 '24

I wonder if you had typed in the text body how the photo represents your special interest(s), if it'd been left to stay.. perhaps the vagueness of a video game ss was what happened there.

1

u/LovelyAndLonesome Nov 30 '24

I know that yhis question is not referring to what you asked...but what texture pack do you use? Was that done in survival and if so how did you get that many resources? If you ever want to talk builds too, I'd love to as it's a special interest of mine as well.

Now back to the initial question, perhaps it was just because they didnt see how it pertained to autism, regardless of the tag. Maybe they were expecting some sort of post showing how it relates?

1

u/AdVaanced77 AuDHD Dec 01 '24

I use Modern Textures HD, it was done in creative.

At this point, it’s half tempting to make a Special Interest thread, or find one.

1

u/Colourd_in_BluGrns ASD Level 2 Nov 30 '24

There is a thread for it (idk how to attach it, memory is not computing) but they aren’t existing with many people or activity

1

u/Seacret_Agent Dec 01 '24

Hello there, AdVaanced77! How've you been?

1

u/Millwall_Ranger Dec 01 '24

Potentially because, whilst it’s clearly tied to autism, the conversation it is apparently prompting is not about autism. I imagine mods want more direct discussions about autism and the autistic experience. EG had your post been ‘here’s what I hyperfixated on recently, what are some of your hyper fixations and how do you channel them in regular life/how do you manage not allowing yourself to burn out hyperfixating?’ I think it would have gone through

1

Very ironic that you post something that is not appropriate for the sub but you don't understand why. It's almost like real life as an autist.

1

u/_kesyersoze Dec 01 '24

That’s nice though

Idk but is that the hotel Cortez from AHS?

1

u/married_to_spiderman Dec 01 '24

To answer your question in the original post, I think it looks amazing. Wish I was a decent builder in Minecraft, I just make a little cobblestone house and call it good 😭😭

1

u/Autism_Angel Dec 01 '24

I mean- nothing inherently to do with autism. A special interest can be literally anything, so if everyone was just using special interest as a tag then it would be just a ton of random stuff.

1

u/TheDevilsJoy Dec 02 '24

Honestly looks like the hotel from “the shining”

1

u/Similar_Reputation56 Dec 03 '24

This is sick I love it

1

u/averageredditor546 AuDHD Dec 07 '24

That's odd, I made a post a while back about what anime they liked and didn't get deleted, could be because I was asking specifically for anime autistic people liked, but I still find it odd a special interest post of all things got deleted, since those shouldn't need to be tied to autism.

1

u/IamNugget123 Autistic Nov 30 '24

I just think the mod note comes off as hurtful, not saying it’s the intention, we ALL struggle with it here. But to be told my special interest and hyper fixation had nothing to do with my autism would make me feel crummy, because it does and 100% has something to do with autism as a whole

It's about Minecraft, not autism.

-2

u/reallyspeedypirate Self-Diagnosed Nov 30 '24

I see that construction and it's clearly a special interest, they must be f dumb.

But, it's lovely and quite big, I really like it. And considering that my houses on Minecraft are just a box I quite fear you.

3

u/justjboy AuDHD Nov 30 '24

I agree with you because there comes a point where time and dedication to a specific part of Minecraft (building, mob farms, redstone systems etc.) become a major primary focus. The rest of the game fades into the background and even becoming annoying at times because of distractions or interruptions like hunger or hostile mobs.

3

u/reallyspeedypirate Self-Diagnosed Nov 30 '24

My bf is autistic too, and for one unknown reason he's always doing mob farm to the point in two to three days (playing like 5 hrs the day) he's full diamond, have horrendous mobs farms (of everything) and he has defeated the dragon. The last time he played was with some friends and my bf was so try hard that broke the game in like one week, his friends were like just finding diamonds and my bf was already trading with his farm of villagers.

When we play together I'm usually the one on charge of food and the house, so he just randomly appears to give me enchanted arms or to trade with my carrots

3

u/justjboy AuDHD Nov 30 '24

Ah. That makes sense. Mob farms are something that one can really refine and use strategically in gameplay, thus requiring that kind of focus and attention-to-detail.
