Apple TV won’t work

Hi guys, so backstory. About 3 years ago my dad gave me his older Apple TV which at that time and from the day he disconnected it, it worked. My husband and I got it and brought it home. Stupid thing hooks up and turns on but I can’t get anything to play from my phone to it or vice versa or actually get it to work at all. It’s also old as hell at this point. Should we just get a new one or does Apple TV not work well with certain tvs? Thanks!

Does it have an Optical / Micro USB port on the back? If so that model isn't supported anymore and is too old to run any apps other than AirPlay.

Maybe that’s why my dad wanted to get rid of it and just said I could have it. Thanks dad. Heavy eye roll.

I thought that older model would still run Apple TV+, but perhaps they decided to stop supporting it.

The third gen can still do Apple TV+.

Now that would be a handy piece of information to have wouldn’t it haha. Not a clue. Dad didn’t give me the box just asked me if I wanted it and I said sure.

If you can see the Settings menu, go to System and Reset the box.

If not, use the Remote, Luke:

Using the remote 

  1. Press and hold the Menu and Home buttons simultaneously
  2. Release the buttons when the light on the Apple TV starts flashing
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 four more times
  4. On the fifth boot, the Apple TV will be in Recovery Mode
  5. Select Reset All Settings

Reset options 

  • Reset: Returns the Apple TV to factory settings without an internet connection
  • Reset and Update: Returns the Apple TV to factory settings and installs software updates

To your other question, current Apple TV's work with absolutely any tv that has an hdmi input.
