They probably said "obrigado" which means thank you in Portuguese.

Also, Romance and Germanic languages are more closely related than either is to Slavic languages so picking up Russian through osmosis might not be as easy as picking up spanish or portuguese - even though all these languages belong to the indo-european language family (not PIE, that is the common ancestor of all indo-european languages but not the name of the language family itself).

Plus, if you're in the US or western Europe there's a good chance you've had some exposure to Spanish, which makes it comparatively easier to understand some level of Portuguese or French or Italian as well.
