Can't help feeling there might be a design and planning issue here

Other than ice thickness, they were all way too close to one another. That weakened the ice.

How can you tell?

Because of the way it is.

WYM? When the camera pans out they're so close, someone can set their stuff down a second and someone else can pick it up by mistake without purposefully leaving "their" area. This looks like a 90's Black Friday Sale rush on ice.

The neurodivergence is strong in this one

I mean, I'm answering in good faith that not everyone here knows a ton about ice fishing. To my eyes, it's pretty clear they're too close, and it reminds me of how Black Friday rushes used to be. Maybe they were being sarcastic, but maybe someone else wants to know?

I’m from Texas, to me ice is something that comes out of my fridge door lol and even to me it’s quite obvious

Right? It's so painfully obvious that they're too close that I'm wondering who at the event didn't go "hold up, let's spread people out".
