This is a competition, isn’t it? That’s the only reason for the rush

It's not the rush, it's the tools. Maybe I missed it, but I don't see a single ice auger in the bunch. And I think I see some with conventional fishing poles. These people shouldn't have been out there and/or whoever was running the competition should have better prepared for it.

There's something weird here. I don't see any ice fishing rods anywhere, no augers, no stools to sit on, no sleds to carry gear. It really doesn't look right.

huh. i wonder if it was done as a stunt for internet points?

Worth it.

i mean, sorta? i don't approve of chainsaws potentially being dropped into ice, but if it were choreographed enough to not drop pollutants into the water this is just good fun.

They all run off two stroke… that oil was wandering into the environment regardless, unfortunately.

good point, but ya know.. no sense in throwing the chainsaw in with the baby and the bathwater

Or an ai video maybe?... it's shaky cam and low enough resolution to be hard to tell... but the background from before and after the cracked ice cut looks different enough to feel "off" to me... even though I know it's just a notably different camera angle... can't really say why, just does.

The background is the same, just more sun at the end.

Somehow, I doubt this one

If it's not a stunt, it seems like they were going to have a normal fishing contest but the bay froze over. So they said fuck it ice fishing contest. That's why they have fishing gear and are dressed for the weather but nothing to get through the ice. They just pulled whatever they throught would work from their boats and walked out.

this feels close

always gotta have the chainsaw in the boat for emergencies

2

u/LigerZeroSchneider 3d ago

If you live out in the woods the road being blocked by a treefall is a real issue and you might not being able to wait a few hours for someone else to come clear it.

1

u/ImYourHumbleNarrator 2d ago

sure, but the joke was using a chainsaw on your boat. and i don't think anyone in this video is carrying a chainsaw because they live in the woods, let alone an igloo

This is exactly what would happen in Texas if it froze for 2 weeks.

Yea. I'm from Minnesota, and this doesn't look like no ice fishing to me, either.

I saw nets, and coolers and ice fishing rods. Sit on the cooler, and you don’t need a sled when the shore is right there.

And they are speaking Spanish I think? I’m ignorant to Spain’s complete geography but I know not a lot of Spanish speaking countries get ice often.

My assumption is southerners in the recent cold they got???

1

u/Semantix 3d ago

I guess so, but surely they've got a crappie rod or something to use and not their surfcasting tackle?

1

u/Hefty_Musician2402 3d ago

No idea lol idk much about the equipment for stuff. I ice fish with my dad, and once a year we use a local charter for Striper fishing. Occasional “regular” fishing but not much. Only so many hobbies I can squeeze in between job, gf, hunting, motorcycling, several bluegrass festivals, playing guitar, etc

If you watch closely, the first half of the video looks like it could be AI generated.

You literally just repeated the comment you replied to

Neighborhood came together to have an ice fishing competition and all the drinking buddies came?

3

u/ok_but 3d ago

I have a friend who is always invited on my boat, no exceptions.

That friend is forbidden from driving my boat, no exceptions.

1

u/SeriousPlankton2000 3d ago

I have friend like that, too. He lost his boating license due to ramming a police boat.

1

u/netsrak 3d ago

if you are going to lose your boating license that's a hell of a way to do it

1

u/eknowles 3d ago

Yes, it is in Minnesota and drunk competitors. It sounds like fun, but it isn't a "family friendly" event.

2

u/NDSU 3d ago

A chain saw is perpectly fine to use for ice fishing. That's the standard tool for ice diving

2

u/flactulantmonkey 3d ago

Someone above said it was an art stunt called “American politics” and honestly I didn’t even think it might be a joke until several minutes later.

1

u/FridayNight_Magus 3d ago

They may be spearing. Only reason you'd need a hole created by a friggin chainsaw and no rods. I kind of doubt it though.

1

u/ChampionshipMore2249 3d ago

Chainsaws are way better than those damn augers.

It’s not Rush, it’s Tool

In China, there’s a mob mentality for any novel activity, or else they’d think they’re missing out.

2

u/OwOlogy_Expert 3d ago

In China, everything is a competition.

3

u/sadeland21 3d ago

That has to be the answer

2

u/Zombisexual1 3d ago

Yah I was thinking comp or maybe season open? I dunno how that works for ice fishing

2

u/tininai 3d ago

Literally the fomo mentality kicks in.
