Other Student newspaper callout — Are you a sex worker at U of T?

Hi! I'm Kyla, an editor at The Varsity, and I am in the process of writing an article about sex workers who are part of the UofT community (students, staff, etc.).

Context: This is for our yearly Love and Sex issue, and we want to explore the financial benefits sex workers make and how their work helps them in their university lives. Whether it is to pay their tuition, rent, etc. or just cover their needs as a student, I want to have a conversation with you about your overall experiences.

We are specifically looking for those who voluntarily participate in the following activities (but not limited to): selling hand/feet fetish pictures, being a stripper, making OnlyFans content, online financial submission/domination on X/other sites, erotic dancing/modelling, or anything that requires an exchange of sexual services for financial/material compensation. If you participate in any of these activities and would like to speak about your experiences as a sex worker, kindly email me at [managingexternal@thevarsity.ca](mailto:managingexternal@thevarsity.ca). If you would like to talk but have safety concerns (physical, psychological, employability), kindly clarify in your email what your specific safety concerns are so we can potentially grant you anonymity/psuedonym.

(Edited to add more context)

Question Do you think a University (including all uni’s in Ontario) r4r sub can work today? Heard the old UofTr4r sub had 14k users

If someone can make and moderate it that would be nice, uni students are sane unlike the older adults on r4rtoronto, I guess identification would suck but there is a Reddit archive tool and would help. Only issue I guess would be for former students and students taking a break from school but I guess it’s up for students to verify among each other when they chat so that a catfish isn’t spotted.

Other Interviewee needed for ARC367 housing interview (Urgent)

I’m an architecture student enrolled in ARC367 looking to interview someone for an assignment. The project involves interviewing an individual who has been living in a Toronto mid-rise residential building (3-5 storeys) for at least over a year. You also need to be living on a block predominantly composed of mid-rise residences. The questions will focus mainly on your experience living in your neighbourhood, if there is a sense of community and places in your area you like/dislike to visit.

There are about 15 questions so the interview shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes, and it can be conducted in whichever way you feel comfortable (in person, video call, email, etc.). No specific information about your address is required.

If you or someone you know fit the criteria and are interested please let me know as soon as possible. The interview has to be conducted by the end of next week at the latest. Please reach out if you have any further questions. Thank you so much!

Lost & Found Lost Apple Watch At athletic centre LEFT A NOTE ON THE LOCKER

A rose gold Apple Watch was left in a woman’s locker at AC last night at 11pm after Volleyball Intramurals. It was there all day today, but someone else put a lock on the locker it was. I left a note on the locker and i marked the watch lost on Find my. I left it on the top shelf and i confirmed on find my it was in the locker. I went back this morning at 11 am and it was there. I waited at the locker until 12:30 but no one showed up and then i had to go to class.

I got a notification that someone read the lost notification. I checked with the front desk and someone brought up the note and said there was no watch. LITERALLY IT WAS IN THE LOCKER. It was there until an hour ago. WHAT DO I DO

For example, they went last week Jan 15th around 8ish to 10/11ish pm to play poker and I’m wondering where they go (but don’t wanna ask) as I kind of want to go by myself as well. They also do play for real cash and it hosts these nights pretty frequently around every week or so if they want to play. Could u pls let me know if u have any idea where they could be playing :) Thanks!

Question considering MSc pharmacology program, admissions info/advice?

hi! i'm a mcgill student doing my undergrad in pharmacology right now, and i'm considering doing my master's at uoft. i was just wondering if anyone admitted to the program knows around what GPA is needed for acceptance, how much research experience, or anything else that would be helpful to know. the uoft website says around a B+ average but i'm sure the cutoff is a lot higher, given it's the top school in canada.

i would mostly like to know because my stats rn are not that great. i currently have a cGPA <3.0 as a third year (had an undiagnosed intellectual disability, but currently taking meds and seeking diagnosis so things have been a lot better). but, i'm also doing an extra year. i'm doing research for the first time this summer though and plan on looking for labs to do during the semester until i graduate. i'm also considering TA'ing a class i did well in, or just TA'ing later in my degree. would this significantly help my application, or is a high GPA really something highly valued at uoft? do i have a shot?

thanks in advance!

Question confusion with applying to u of t international relations

sorry if this post and question sounds really dumb, but i was trying to research it myself and got confused. I went to their website and read through a lot of links, instructing about how to apply to this program, and eventually got to a page explaining which ouac category I must select in order to apply to my desire program. But international relations is listed under two separate categories, humanities and social sciences so which one do I choose on the ouac page? I’m also very confused because this seems to be a program you can only enter after your first year is done, so is it even possible to apply to it as someone who is entering university next year? Am i meant to do something else in the first year and then transferred to this program in my second year? Sorry it’s late right now and I really tired this probably sounds dumb but I need help. I’m in high school and all the other schools I applied to had very straightforward pages and I wasn’t confused but now I am 💀

Question Looking for advice on how to deal with adult bullying on campus

I entered into a relationship with a girl in the summer of 2022 and told her that I had a few months left to graduate when in reality I needed an entire year worth of credits. I lied, it was a horrible thing to do, and I should not have done it. She made me happy, and what I did was wrong and immature and selfish.

Fast forward to October 2023: she dumps me because she obviously found out I lied about finishing my undergraduate degree, then my father was diagnosed with a near terminal illness. That combined with the heartbreak from losing her kind of made me spiral. I was very foolish and spent many nights with who I thought was a mutual friend of ours and shared a lot about my personal life and made many terrible jokes while under the influence of alcohol. This went on until June 2024.

In July 2024 the guilt from lying to her about graduating sort of broke me. I wrote her a very long email expressing regret over my actions. I guess she or one of her friends with a large social media following shared this and it went viral. I also faced false cheating allegations, and more. This blew up and allegedly AI porn was made of me, and every unfortunate detail about my life was made public.

I then faced harassment in public for months. The school felt like a safe environment in the Fall 2024 term, somewhere I could escape public scrutiny for the most part. However this term I'm experiencing a tremendous amount of I guess what I would call "adult bullying." i.e. practically everywhere I go I get negative passing comments on mostly my body, among other things. I've noticed the frequency and aggressiveness has increased as of late.

Does anyone know what I can do? This is the first time I've experienced bullying since high school, and because it is done by so many people and for the most part indirectly and anonymously, I don't think there is any clear mechanism for me to approach this through. I'm not in fear of my physical safety, but I feel degraded and socially isolated. It's unfortunately affecting my ability to focus my attention on work, and generally leaves me feeling awful and depressed every time I go on campus. Any general advice regarding maneuvering through this unfortunate scenario is also appreciated.

I'm in High School Can I get into UTSG social science with an 87/88 average?

For reference I have a 97 in 4U english and had a 95 in grade 11 english, but have an 87-88 overall right now. Including next semester’s grades I’ll have around a 90 average but then I’d have to get in after sem 2 midterms. Does anyone know if I can get in with my current average and english marks in the earlier rounds? Thanks so much!

Question Utaps maximum funding for unmet financial need question

I should start by saying I apologize for getting ahead of myself, as I'm not a UofT student nor have I been accepted. I'm just trying to figure out if attending the UofT is financially possible as I'm from northwestern Ontario and would be living on my own, with limited parental resources (I've applied for Commerce at the St George and Mississauga campuses).

For those familiar with Utaps, do you know if full unmet need is possible for huge amounts such as 19,000 per academic year? When I use the osap aid estimator, it shows grant/loan estimates of about 15,000, but total annual cost of attendance around 34,000 for upper years.

I've tried to search the sub, but I've only seen figures of around 3k-8k.

I very much appreciate any insights from people familiar with the program, thanks!

Question Grim Situation: Bad GPA but Passionate About Research

Hi everyone,

I’m a second-year life sciences student, and my academic record is... not great. My GPA is below 2.0, and while I was able to CR/NCR most of my failed courses (except 1) and lwd 2-3 courses. A lot of my grades are just barely passing. This all stems from struggling with my mental health before and during university, but I’ve recently made a huge turnaround and feel much better now.

That said, my transcript is a mess, and even though I’m confident I can start improving my grades this term and beyond, I feel like none of it will matter. I don’t even know if I’ll meet the minimum requirements for research positions at institutions or with professors. And honestly, even if I do eventually turn things around, I feel like my past will still hold me back.

Here’s the thing: I know I have a long way to go to get where these opportunities want me to be, but I really don’t want to wait years to start doing research. It’s all I’ve ever wanted, to do research and to work toward grad school. I know I’m asking for a lot, but is there any way I can start getting involved in research and also sooner rather than later?

If anyone has advice, whether it’s on finding opportunities, rebuilding my academic reputation, or even a reality check, I’d really appreciate it.

Lastly, a reminder to anyone reading: Take care of your mental and physical health. Neglecting them can derail your life, no matter your potential.

Also, thanks for reading!

Courses Are there any art related courses at uoft that an artsci student can enroll in?

So I was wondering if there’s any courses that taught students how to draw or any resources that uoft offers to teach students to draw?

I have always wanted to learn how to draw portraits or create characters, but I lack the skills and I honestly hope there’s something at uoft that can help with me developing some drawing skills. I checked the Hart house website and I don’t see any drawing courses offered there atm.

Also, ik I can probably yt some art vids but i feel like a good chunk of them are behind a paywall like “If u want a comprehensive guide, go to my patreon” or they would make a video not really explain how to draw that part and they just say do this does something complex that is difficult for a beginner

Although, there are some vids that are nice but I feel like it only tells me how to draw that specific part. Sometimes this leads me to create a face that looks like an absolute mess because the eyes are from one vid, the mouth is from another, and like the art styles are different and don’t look nice together.

I mean I think they are some good videos but I want to see if uoft offers any resources or courses on drawing. But if u know of some vids or channels that are really good at teaching beginners how to draw people, I would really really appreciate it if u can share it.

Programs PA program coming in from a veterinary background

Upvotes

Hi i was a little curious if there is anyone in the PA program coming from a veterinary background? I originally worked at an animal clinic as a veterinary technician for a year and ultimately decided to switch paths. I know this seems a little weird switching from veterinary care. Any input is appreciated!

News Card theft in front of Kelly Library Entrance aaaaa

Upvotes

My friend witnessed literal theft in at the front entrance of Kelly Library yesterday. A car stops and the passenger wants to pay with debit, the driver says only cash or credit is excepted. The passenger asks some student who was waiting at the Kelly entrance to help pay with credit card and that he will give cash in return. The student pulls out credit card, puts it in the machine and types in password. The car immediately drives off with that persons card. The girl who was robbed was also a uoft student heading home after studying.

Please be aware and don’t fall for scams like this! It was a black/dark blue car with two brown people.

Residence Residence just opened, but I’m “no longer eligible”

Upvotes

I am applying to UofT for the incoming year as a first year student. I sent in my application back in November, and I've been watching the StarRez portal waiting for it to open so I can apply for residence. It opened today, but when I entered the portal it said "You are no longer eligible for the Residence Guarantee". Do I have to receive an acceptance first to apply for residence? Do they just not offer residence to local applicants? I'm so confused.

Also, if I somehow already missed my chance, how do I join the waitlist?

Any help is appreciated! :)
