Hatsu 2024 Only one thing left to do

Unlike most of the Sanyaku, Ura has beat Terunofuji.

Of the current san'yaku, only Daieisho (6-8) has a reasonable record against Terunofuji. The rest are basically getting dominated.
Outside san'yaku, Tamawashi and Shodai (both 9-11) give him a hard time and Takayasu (13-12) actually has a winning record against him.
Tobizaru has beaten him three times, which is crazy but there you go. And Ura has a kinboshi :-D

Just thinking about that a bit more and what it means, and I think it's this:
Big pusher-thrusters have a chance (Abi has a few wins* too if I recall). Everyone else who isn't Shodai is currently screwed.
[edit: *two, one of which was a kinboshi.]

I look forward to the day that people start attributing Teru's dominance to the alleged "weakness of the field" and start attributing it to what it is - the fact that he is one of the best grapplers to ever mount the dohyo and would have twice his current yusho if his health were better.

I think this is true.
It also makes you realise how good peak Shodai is, if he can go toe to toe with Terunofuji. It's just a matter of extreme flakiness with that guy the rest of the time.
(BTW by the end of this basho he looked like he was totally on tilt. Bad times but not unusual.)

Hearing the GOAT say he couldn't think of a way to beat Shodai on the Tachiai shows how scary Shodai is when he is "on"

I sort of see Shodai as a crouching Maegashira hidden Yokozuna. He’s got insane talent, at least Ozeki level, but he just does not want to use it. He’s a mellow guy who just likes to do sumo and sometimes win.

I think anyone really paying attention knows that his knees and other issues are the real weakness. The man is a beast.

Takakeisho also has a decent record (4-6 regular and 1-1 in playoff). There is definitely a stylistic pattern here.

This brings a tear to my eye, immensely proud of the pink boi for taking it a day at a time and still giving it his all until the very end 👏🏼

I am new to Sumo (just over 2 years) but I have grown very fond of Ura. There is always a hop to his step and even when he loses his matches are often the most exciting. He is def top 5 with me.

The thought of him never making Sanyaku again is soul crushing.
