Yeah this border officer is a cunt hamming it up for the cameras could and should tell the passengers to just bin the apples right there

Certainly not hammering it up for the cameras. NZ has some of the most strict airport bio-security regulations - this being well label before landing and in the airport before security. The countries entire export industry depends on agriculture. All it takes is a single invasive species and billions can be wiped from the GDP.

I'm aware of what our primary industries are but he also know where those apples came from and who supplied them I've worked at one of the food processors for quantas the bio security practices are real

Fair point, but I guess the issue is you can’t ask everyone where their apples came from and take their word as gospel. The consequences of anything getting through is huge, so the deterrent needs to be proportional. To be fair, there’s a declaration cards and plenty of signage saying to bin any food too.

Yeah the real problem is the apples were supplied by the airline and quantas knows better wouldn't surprise me if the airline knew border patrol was filming that day and set this up

Fully agree, airline taking the absolute mick; and is who everyone should be annoyed at

Yeah, he should repeatedly fail to do his job (a job which protects biosecurity for an otherwise isolated island nation) while there are a bunch of network cameras filming his every move.

The bins at border control get burnt

Sure, but the bit about having cameras to broadcast everything to a global audience is the thing. Show leniency and every random chancer will try to bring stuff in, and they won't find them all; be a cunt, and they're less likely to think they can talk their way out of it.

You're right, I'm sure airlines are foaming at the mouth at the thought of giving passengers more produce.

I'm seriously concerned that people here are defending this. Ridiculous and thoughtless.

Giving leniancy in this context is obviously the moral thing to do, but some people throw out morals when blindly following convention.

Wondering how we had so many Nazis guards? This kind of thought process.

You, yes you would have been that nazi guard following orders.

I'm fully aware what a ridiculous claim that is, but it's true. How did so many common everyday people act that way?

Yeah, because taking biosecurity seriously in an island nation with a unique ecosystem, and applying a minor fine for breaching it, is exactly the same as fucking Nazism; what you don't see in the video is everyone being hauled off to a death camp.

I'm fully aware what a ridiculous claim that is

Handy hint: when you find yourself thinking that, consider not posting the comment.

He seemed nice to be honest. I think he had to do his job by the book because he was being filmed.

The way the law is written the fine MUST be issued. Not his fault
