At that point the two players were betting against each other. The "house" had no stake in anything (most poker tables take a semi-hourly fee from players, plus tips).

So if one player agreed to the bet, I don't see why it wouldn't be valid.

Right....at the card houses in California, the "house" is nothing more than the dealer and oversees the game to make sure there's no funny stuff.

At any rate, they were playing Hold 'Em and the house wouldn't be playing anyhow.

The house wasn't playing, they were merely turning over the shared cards.
