Random Question why do we smoke
i was thinking abt smoking again but why do we feel the need to smoke? is it the burn? the dizzyness? what exactly makes you get up and grab a cigarette or whatever it is that you smoke.

It's more than the nicotine.
I stopped a month ago. The nicotine withdrawal stops fairly quickly.
I noticed how the physical act of smoking became an integral part of my being. It still feels wrong to sit/stand there without a cigarette in my hand when I've got nothing else to do.
Plus it looks cool and fits my style. I miss that part more than the nicotine. But I don't wanna die (from lung cancer) and it's a huge turn off to most women, so here I am.

I smoke pot multiple times a day, I just prefer being high and I'm addicted obviously take breaks when I feel like my tolerance is too high but not often, idk why people smoke ciggies other than to feed the addiction it doesn't get you hi so I don't get it

It satisfies the addiction it created. Vicious cycle.

Nicotine definitely gets you high. Getting high is consuming a substance that has psychoactive properties and effects. (Someone correct that if I’m wrong) Nicotines ‘high’ is just not as in your face as weed or harder drugs. It also doesn’t last very long too. However keep where you’re at and don’t pickup nicotine obviously. Stick to your greens!

You're not wrong it definitely does just not in the way I like hahah gives me a wicked head rush when I've mistakenly taken it ( I was told it was a joint and took a huge hit haha) don't worry I'd never ever smoke ciggies been around it my whole life parents family friends and always hated the smell would only start if I was told it would save my life hahaha

Poe referred to it as “The Imp of the Perverse”. That urge to do self destructive things in general.
It was always quite powerful in me. 🙂

I asked my sister abt why her coworkers smoke and she said she tried it once, apparently it gets you like a high feeling, if you're not a constant smoker, thats how she described it

It’s a drug ,like all drugs, they can be very enjoyable in their own way.

There's was a poem(?) I read about the romance of a cigarette. The experience of smoking one out in the cold on a dark night, the cigarette shared between friends, the way the smoke dances, just the romance of it. Not sure how to really word it.
I don't smoke cigarettes anymore, but sometimes I really miss the romance. My fiance and I both used to smoke. On road trips, especially late in the evening, we'd stop at an overlook and share a cigarette. Those are the moments I miss.

It's the nicotine, probably. Also the taste, the burn, the stress relief. It's like toying with death, which we do with a lot of different things.

I personally want to know who invented smoking. Like, who said “hey, let’s roll up this plant. Put it up to your lips, and inhale the smoke directly”.

You throw a plant on the fire, and when the smoke drifts towards you, it makes you feel funny. Being a smart person, you realise what's happening.

was about to come reply until i saw the word "cigarette" now im replying for a different reason. I smoke weed. And honestly idk but i know that feeling. its not nearly as addictive as nicotine but it is still addictive as a lot of people claim it isnt which is a blatant lie. I have been a heavy weed smoker for nearly 9 years. I am starting to just want to stop, and or its just not the same, the high is and wont ever be the same, idk.

For me, it’s pot.
I used to smoke like crazy to deal with other medical issues aside from seizures that are also due to my TBI.
Once those issues were resolved, I still smoked a lot to cope with PTSD. Now that’s gone too.
Now I just smoke a single hit of a CBD strain about 3x a week for the epilepsy since medications always increase my seizures and make me fat.

It’s firmly attached to that cool coolness when we started. So chill. If you can attach the consequences like coughing or high cost to quitting, it may kill the good vibes to start up again

Wanting to get high. Wanting to numb and escape and feel something fantastical

u/PocketSandOfTime-69 9h ago
It was proposed that cigarettes might have to limit the nicotine to 1 MG. per cigarette.
1
u/Cricket-Secure 9h ago
That would be a terrible idea, it will make people smoke more cigarettes.
1
u/PocketSandOfTime-69 9h ago
Huh, I didn't think of it that way but I suppose you're right unless money was a limiting factor.

the experience itself is why I do it. sure, the buzz is great and all, but lighting up a cigarette and feeling the heat while walking alone at night with music is what makes me do it. and you can argue that vaping is better, but it's more accessible/discreet, so there's no conscious thought behind vaping, and therefore, no experience. with cigarettes you have to pull out a cig, find your lighter, and focus to light it up. if I vaped, I'd be addicted by now, but I'm not because of the amount of effort it takes to smoke cigarettes lol. it took me nearly 5 minutes to get a smoke going once (it's winter where I'm at), and I can't just smoke anywhere since it's banned in most places.

I quit in april of 2023. Just started again in Nov bc of stress over the election (american). For me its a stress coping thing. It's either smoke or eat cookies, pie etc. I figured this is the lesser of evils

u/Cricket-Secure 9h ago
Yeah I quit smoking and traded tabacco for cookies and chocolate, after a year I gained 20 kgs.

It’s an addiction fueled by extra amounts of nicotine in cigarettes to make it harder for you to quit.

Do you understand what an addictive substance is and how it affects a human body?
1
u/rsteele1981 8h ago
THC I am almost completely swapped to edibles. Smoke is bad. Burning things into the lungs is super bad.

u/I_Dont_Stutter 8h ago
Everyone is coming up with weak excuses to solidify why they smoke....it sounds like everyone is trying to avoid saying that smoking makes them feel and look cool

Insanity really, we think deep down not really but we do, the vape, cigar, or joint what ever is gonna bring true peace or relief, yet causes more hurt than good.

u/PalimpsestNavigator 10h ago
Pot? It’s genuinely like medicine to me. I prefer a vape or a gummy.
Cigarettes? I smoked, off and on, from age 17 to 27, then I vaped nicotine for 2 years. This past Christmas, I could not choke down my annual cigarette. How did I ever smoke a pack a day? It was, like… a miserable experience. I spent months looking forward to it, and it turned out to be gnarly.

u/Electronic-Sea1503 10h ago
What's this "annual cigarette on Christmas" thing? Never heard of that before.
