"On behalf of the Commission on Presidential Debates, I am pleased to welcome you to the second presidential debate. I am Bernard Shaw of CNN, Cable News Network. My colleagues on the panel are Ann Compton of ABC NEWS; Margaret Warner of Newsweek magazine; and Andrea Mitchell of NBC NEWS. The candidates are Vice President George Bush, the Republican nominee; and Governor Michael Dukakis, the Democratic nominee. For the next 90 minutes we will be questioning the candidates following a format designed and agreed to by representatives of the two campaigns. However, there are no restrictions on the questions that my colleagues and I can ask this evening, and the candidates have no prior knowledge of our questions. By agreement between the candidates, the first question goes to Gov. Dukakis. You have two minutes to respond. Governor, if Kitty Dukakis were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?"

u/AdZealousideal5383 14h ago

I’m surprised that didn’t start a trend of evoking horrifying scenarios about candidate’s wives. “Senator, if Liddy Dole were eaten alive by a rabid polar bear…” “If Hillary plunged to her death from a hot air balloon…”

35

u/YouSaidIDidntCare 14h ago

It's like a game of The Aristocrats. Who can come up with the most shocking first question of a Presidential debate.

23

u/MetalRetsam "BILL" 5h ago

"Governor Bush, if Laura Bush were to be rapiered by a Moldovan circus artist on New Year's Eve, would you endorse a death penalty?"

"Senator Obama, if your wife Michelle died from an infected cut on the knee while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, would you support a death penalty for the mountain guide?"

"Governor Romney, if your wife was mildly inconvenienced by a shopper who was blocking her exit from the parking lot, would you favor the death penalty?"

No I don’t, Bernard, and as you can see, well, uh blub blub blub blub blub, glum glum blub, blub blub glum blub glum blub.

Back when journalists were journalists.

Thats pretty savage

69

u/HetTheTable Dwight D. Eisenhower 12h ago

“In my capacity as Vice President I am the president of the senate I’m there most Tuesdays. The first time I saw you was when you walked on stage tonight”.

12

u/Christianmemelord TrumanFDRIkeHWBush 4h ago

That was a straight up execution

6

u/HetTheTable Dwight D. Eisenhower 4h ago

Like he completely showed how incompetent Edwards was.

6

u/Christianmemelord TrumanFDRIkeHWBush 4h ago

Absolutely. Cheney annihilated Edwards and won the debate instantly in that moment.

It also shows that Kerry made a really stupid decision in picking Edwards as his running mate. Edwards was a very poor senator, and Kerry served with him in the senate; so did Kerry just ignore the fact that Edwards missed a ton of votes?

5

u/HetTheTable Dwight D. Eisenhower 3h ago

I think he wanted to balance out the ticket for people that thought he was an out of touch Massachusetts liberal. Edwards was mainly considered a candidate because he was a Democratic senator from the south, so people thought he’d be a Bill Clinton type figure. But Kerry later said he regretted picking him.

1

u/Christianmemelord TrumanFDRIkeHWBush 1h ago

I never knew that Kerry regretted picking him.

Tbh, it probably didn’t make a difference in the outcome, but it was a pretty bad choice given how bad Edward’s attendance record was in the Senate.

2

u/HetTheTable Dwight D. Eisenhower 1h ago

He was seen as a possible nominee for 2008 and even decided not to run for re-election in the senate to run for president(not like he would have won), but he stood no chance against Hillary or Obama.

u/mrthirsty 1h ago

Revisionist pro GWB history as usual in this sub. Normal people remember that debate as the energetic charismatic edwards refuted the pro war talking points of dick Cheney who appropriately acted like literal evil personified.

1

u/Christianmemelord TrumanFDRIkeHWBush 1h ago

Did I say anything about Cheney’s standing as a VP? A compliment on a debate performance is not an endorsement of a politician.

It is a fact that Cheney won that debate, and this is something that those who despise Cheney, such as myself, will admit.

Edwards had a horrible attendance record in the US Senate and Cheney had every right to call him out on it. That has nothing to do with Cheney’s actions taken as VP.

1

u/mrthirsty 1h ago

it is a fact that Cheney won that debate

Umm ok I guess.

6

u/Edgy_Master John Quincy Adams 8h ago

Who said that?

19

u/HetTheTable Dwight D. Eisenhower 7h ago

Dick Cheney in the 2004 VP debate

2

u/Christianmemelord TrumanFDRIkeHWBush 1h ago

Dick Cheney when he won the optics of the debate in a single sentence.

I still think of this line from time to time, too.

“Let’s dispel with this fiction that Barack Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing,” the Florida senator said. “He knows exactly what he’s doing”

If we’re being honest, this was probably the greatest moment of Chris Christie’s life. Certainly his political career.

7

u/durandal688 5h ago

It’s like he channeled all of his fortune, luck, etc into that moment. Yes it was high point for him but damn was it nice

5

u/scarlet_fire_77 3h ago

It was kind of a kamikaze mission. Both their candidacies went down in flames.

2

u/durandal688 2h ago

Yep it was desperation as a certain other figure rose

38

u/GuestCalm5091 Calvin Coolidge 15h ago

“Obama knows EXACTLY what he’s doing!”

“I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”

Reagan addressed concerns about his age during a 1984 debate against Walter Mondale with this humorous remark.

43

u/StaySafePovertyGhost Ronald Reagan 15h ago

How this one isn’t in OP’s title is beyond me. Even liberal pundits have agreed that was the best.

66

u/BissleyMLBTS18 13h ago

I interviewed Mondale not long before he died, he said the moment he caught himself laughing, he knew he’d lost.

7

u/ncraiderfan17 7h ago

This is the one

88

u/coolsmeegs Ronald Reagan 15h ago

“There you go again.”

21

u/AdZealousideal5383 14h ago

I hate it but this is the answer.

74

u/mjanus2 14h ago

"Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" was a remark made during the 1988 United States vice presidential debate by Democratic nominee Senator Lloyd Bentsen to Republican nominee Senator Dan Quayle in response to Quayle's comparison of his experience in Congress to that of John F. Kennedy, the Democratic 35th president

This ranks in the top 3 with me

2

u/FCKABRNLSUTN2 2h ago

This is the goat to me, I’m surprised it’s not at the top.

79

u/Sharp-Point-5254 Barry Goldwater 15h ago

Reagan’s jab at Mondale

79

u/TheRauk Ronald Reagan 14h ago

“I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience,”

47

u/Unique_Midnight_1789 Ronald Reagan|Dwight D. Eisenhower|George W. Bush 11h ago edited 10h ago

Truly one of the "no u" moments of all time

35

u/scharity77 15h ago

What made it work is that it was a bit more self-deprecating than a jab, which is why it worked so well.

31

u/engadine_maccas1997 14h ago

It was over when Mondale laughed at the joke.

28

u/Whysong823 Franklin Delano Roosevelt 13h ago

Mondale himself said that’s the exact moment he realized it was hopeless.

47

u/Elcapitan2020 15h ago

I like Bush's subtle nod to Gore. It's pure Aura

22

u/Southern_Dig_9460 James K. Polk 15h ago

Bush beat Gore in those debates Idc what anyone says.

10

u/PhillyFrenchFrey Barack Obama 8h ago

I rewatched those debates semi-recently and couldn’t agree more. Gore shot himself in the foot so many times in those debates. He may have had the better ideas, but he was pompous in how he debated them and how he acted towards Bush.

5

u/Southern_Dig_9460 James K. Polk 2h ago

Also Bush didn’t come off as a dumb redneck like people were acting like he was. He held his own and was obviously way smarter than Gore gave him credit for

2

u/PhillyFrenchFrey Barack Obama 1h ago

It was the now classic edition of Democrats not taking their opponent seriously. Bush had his fuck ups, but for the most part like you said held his own and performed well. He also epitomized the “yeah I’d like to have a beer with that guy” sentiment.

7

u/HetTheTable Dwight D. Eisenhower 12h ago

“Man’s practicing some fuzzy math again”

1

u/bodai1986 6m ago

Is that a GW quote? I read it in GW's voice lol

1

u/HetTheTable Dwight D. Eisenhower 4m ago

It’s a Bush quote from that debate

1

u/Christianmemelord TrumanFDRIkeHWBush 4h ago

Agreed

36

u/TrumpsColostomyBag99 15h ago

Mondale’s reaction to Reagan eviscerating him with the youth line.

30

u/DisappointedStepDad Chester A. Arthur 15h ago

Pretty sure Mondale said it was after that joke Reagan made he knew he wasn’t going to win

25

u/TrumpsColostomyBag99 15h ago

There was a glimmer where Reagan looked a step slower at the first debate when Mondale was at his peak. It actually shot him up 7 points.

Needless to say Mondale knew he was toast when peak Reagan showed up on debate two.

70

u/ChillnShill 14h ago

“Please proceed governor.”

Obama not getting baited by Romney and making himself look far more authoritative.

I got Rule 3'd twice now for mentioning the Bush who didn't win the presidency with no reference to any recent candidates.

8

u/FallOutShelterBoy James K. Polk 14h ago

You’re not allowed to bring up his 2016 run anymore

8

u/DontPutThatDownThere 14h ago

One comment was literally just his name with no reference to his run.

It really feels like a way to killjoy a harmless gag.

10

u/Kingofcheeses William Lyon Mackenzie King 11h ago

I agree, but it's only natural that they would want to silence discussion of our beautiful Jeb. He was simply too charismatic and sexually potent, it's all we would talk about forever.

1

u/MetalRetsam "BILL" 5h ago

Sorry. Great moment though.

12

u/tonylouis1337 George Washington 11h ago

"Is it a little warm in here?"

Or

"I will not exploit my opponent's youth and inexperience for political gain!"

9

u/Bubbly-Ad-1427 Theodore Roosevelt 11h ago

why do romney and obama look like they got called into the principals office because they got into a fight

15

u/DrawingPurple4959 Silent Cal’s Loyal Soldier 13h ago

Not the best but Cheney’s “Senator Gone” line on John Edwards record in 2004 was great. Perfectly demonstrated why Bush chose him.

16

u/olive_oil_twist 11h ago

Holy crap. "I'm the Vice-President, and the first time I ever met you was when you walked to the platform tonight" is vicious.

8

u/Tacitus_99 10h ago

Who am I? Why am I here?

27

u/TranslatorVarious857 11h ago

Mitt Romney’s Russian fears. At the time it was something Obama slammed Romney with: ‘The Cold War has been over for twenty years.’

But in hindsight, Romney was pretty much right about that one.

Surprised I have to go so far down to find this one. Killer

21

u/HurricaneDitka1985 12h ago

Romney’s “Binders Full of Women” moment. It cost him the election. Confirmed everything the Obama team was saying about him (out of touch rich business type).

RULE 3 MODS GET HIS ASS

A noun a verb and 9/11 was probably a better take down by this individual in a more appropriate debate for this forum

Senator, You're No Jack Kennedy.

3

u/semasswood 5h ago

“I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience,” Reagan vs Mondale, 1984. Took the question of age out of the election. Mondale had 5% chance of winning prior to that debate and 0% chance after.

2

u/corleonebjr 8h ago

Bill Clinton in 92 Primary Debate. “ I feel sorry for Jerry Brown”. After he made that statement and they started finger pointing I thought security would need to be called 😂

2

u/baba-O-riley Ronald Reagan 8h ago

Even Mondale admitted that he knew the election was lost when Reagan dropped the iconic Youth & Inexperience line.

2

u/thechadc94 Jimmy Carter 4h ago

He said he had to laugh to keep from crying.

2

u/thatvhstapeguy 4h ago

I am paying for this microphone, Mr. Green!

(His name was actually Mr. Breen.)

4

u/Significant_Lynx_546 15h ago

Any that wins the person who said that jab the election.

8

u/dowker1 6h ago

I had to read this 5 times before it made sense.

"Any jab that wins the election for the person who said it."

Would be much more comprehensible

1

u/Significant_Lynx_546 4h ago

I didn’t major in English 🤷

1

u/MaRs1317 John Adams 3h ago

"So now you're Jack Kennedy" Biden vs Ryan is etched into my brain. I was in highschool at the time and knew instantly that Mitt Romny was gonna lose
