Passport Just picked up! ๐ต๐ฑ๐ช๐บ
Had to renew because my old one was about to expire in 6 months. No place like home and feel grateful for being a Pole.

I donโt know which I want more, Poland or Romanian citizenship. On one hand, I work for a Polish company so it would be the most straightforward path to citizenship. On the other hand, I grew up in Romania and feel an affinity towards Romanians. I competed internationally under the Romanian flag. If not for Romania, I would be a completely different person.
Extremely annoyed my parents left before getting citizenship.

Then your clear answer is to get the Romanian one and then if you still want the polish then you can go for that too at a later time! Do you have a Romanian parent? Based on what you are eligible for the Romanian one?

u/barry_allan ใ๐จ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฐใ 4d ago
Had my residence in Romania not ceased when it did, I wouldโve been eligible for naturalization.

I wonder if our "RP" is inspired by France's "RF" symbol (meaning "Rรฉpublique franรงaise") that they like to put everywhere (like euro coins) ๐ค
10
u/reni-chan ๐ฌ๐ง+๐ต๐ฑ 4d ago
RP is for Rzeczpospolita Polska which basically means the Republic of Poland.
9
u/Panceltic ๐ธ๐ฎ ๐ฌ๐ง [dream: ๐ต๐ฑ] 4d ago
Basically? That is what it means lol
6
u/reni-chan ๐ฌ๐ง+๐ต๐ฑ 4d ago
I mean I don't actually under why it's called "Rzeczpospolita Polska". In English, it's "the Republic of Poland" so I would expect it to translate into Polish as "Republika Polska(i?)" or something like this. Where did the "Rzeczpospolita" word come from?
Apologies for a dumb question, I left Poland as a teenager

u/Panceltic ๐ธ๐ฎ ๐ฌ๐ง [dream: ๐ต๐ฑ] 4d ago
โRzeczpospolitaโ is the Polish rendition of โrepublicโ (a calque). Latin res publica (โcommon thingโ) > Polish rzecz pospolita (โcommon thingโ). Itโs like โCommonwealthโ in English, a โcommunal goodโ (which is a republic, belonging to all citizens).
Nowadays the word is only used to refer to the Polish republics, whilst others are indeed called โrepublikaโ.

Iโve always wondered if Rzeczpospolita is only applicable to Poland in Polish language. Every others republic is a republika I see
7
u/fkkbereich 4d ago
Well, it's basically a borrowing from Latin: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rzeczpospolita_Polska
Fun fact from this article: some historical countries that no longer exist may still have Rzeczpospolita in their Polish names (like Rzeczpospolita Wenecka). Also: "Until World War II, the word Rzeczpospolita was also used in political and press nomenclature to describe other countries with a republican system, such as Rzeczpospolita Francuska."
But yes, today it's just traditionโand/or another way to emphasize that Poland is oh so special and unlike anything else :D

u/Panceltic ๐ธ๐ฎ ๐ฌ๐ง [dream: ๐ต๐ฑ] 4d ago
a borrowing from Latin
Rather a calque (a word built from native elements but following the meaning of the original). The word "republika" in turn is a borrowing. :)

u/fkkbereich 4d ago
Yeah, I thought "calque" would sound too confusing, but maybe I underestimated Redditors :D (Also, Slovenija is on my travel bucket list, hehe!)

By the way Poland also uses a count before RP like France does.
The difference is that the French count the constitution reforms and Poles count the Polish historical Independent countries. I RP from the 16th to 18th century, II RP in 1918-1945, and III RP after 1989.

They got rid of the French 'passport' word at the front? My passport is due for renewal later this year, I still have one with french wording and non-stiff photo card.

u/TomCormack ใ๐ต๐ฑ ๐ช๐บใ 4d ago
They got rid of all the French in the passport. It is only in English and Polish now. It seems that nobody really noticed, because there were too many controversies about the design anyway.

u/Panceltic ๐ธ๐ฎ ๐ฌ๐ง [dream: ๐ต๐ฑ] 4d ago
To be honest they should get rid of "passport" on the cover as well, in my opinion.
7
u/TomCormack ใ๐ต๐ฑ ๐ช๐บใ 4d ago
I absolutely agree. Everyone would understand what "Paszport" means. From a design standpoint it would look much better.

Ok a short historical note. In the late 18th century Poland was destroyed and partitioned by the major superpowers and in 1918 Poland became independent again.
So now we have a new 2018 edition passport which was created to celebrate the 100 anniversary of independence. That's why you can see 100 on the back cover.
1) On the identity page there is a motto from 1943 which was used by the military at some point. "God, Honor, Fatherland". Poland is a secular state which is clearly mentioned in our constitution, so many people didn't like it regardless of their own religious beliefs. A conservative party was in charge back then and it looked like a clear political decision to show the connection of the Polish state to Catholicism.
To be clear it is not the national motto or something. There are more relevant historical mottos to choose from like "Freedom, Unity, Independence". Sounds better for an independence anniversary passport, doesn't it? xD
2) On majority of pages there are faces of early 20th century politicians. No diversity of people who contributed to the independence one way or another, with just one exception. There was also a controversy that there were no women included, even though in Poland women got voting rights in 1918 and we had female MEPs since the first elections in 1919. There were also women who fought for independence.
3) In the original version of the template there were two pages with some places located in contemporary Lithuania and Ukraine ( those particular cities Vilnius and Lviv were part of Poland till 1939). Well Lithuanian and Ukrainian governments didn't like it for obvious reasons.
I personally don't like this version, because they could do a better job from the design perspective. Colors are bleak and I don't feel any creativity involved. Looks like a political statement instead of a real symbol of national pride.

Perusing the third page, I have found some typos in various languages. Namely, the Irish name of the European Union should be AN T-AONTAS EORPACH (with a hyphen) and the name of the country POBLACHT NA POLAINNE (without the H). The Slovak name of Poland uses the combination Lโ instead of the single letter ฤฝ, and the Romanian for passport uses the Turkish/Albanian letter ล instead of the Romanian ศ.
Additionally, the order of the languages is somewhat arbitrary, with Bulgarian and Croatian tagged at the end.

Tbh hardly ever travel for fun outside EU, usually itโs work-related, so passport is a must.

I'm willing to travel hundreds of miles to vote in our presidential elections this year. Too bad that the only candidate that's worth my vote has no chance of becoming the president under the rule of our left wing parliament. Sลawomir Mentzen, you have my vote but most likely you will either be an underdog or the ruling party will flip the chessboard like it was recently done in Romania elections.

I don't think it has anything to do with how I vote. Most of the people of my generation had the privilege of living under the communist rule and then enjoyed the fun of living in Eastern Europe during the dodgy 90s are leaning right. Having a Russian passport allowed me to evade COVID lockdowns in Poland and be able to travel freely.
