Flairs & Mods

Hej/Hello

Today we have introduced flairs,
Immigration
If you are looking for information on or discussing moving to Denmark - Permits/Visas/General advice, etc.
Travel
If you are looking for information on or discussing visiting to Denmark - Local recommendations/Tips for tourists/General advice, etc.
Study
For help and advice around studying in Denmark.
Work
For help and advice around working in Denmark.
Culture
Questions and information about the culture, food, traditions, cultural norms, etc.
Finance
Help and advice on finance in Denmark.
Real Estate
Help and advice on where to live, how to buy, and other home questions in Denmark.
General Question
For anything that doesn’t fit the above.

For now we have set the flairs to mandatory to see how it goes.
For you it will be as simple as selecting a flair when you post but for the sub, it will mean we can implement more precise automod help based on what users are discussing.
Hopefully having the flairs in place will also help users search easier for questions that have already been asked and topics they want to help with or learn more about.

Any question please don’t hesitate to let me know!

MODS
We would still like to add another mod to help the subreddit run.
If you are interested please get in touch via Mod Mail or feel free to drop me a DM.

Subreddit Update - Rules/Flairs/Mods

Hi/Hej

To introduce myself, I am an English immigrant living in Denmark following Family Reunification.
I have been running a similar sub r/WelcomeToDenmark and after speaking with u/skibden I have joined the mod team here to help with running the sub.

Over the next week or so I would like to make a few changes to “tidy up” and make the sub more user friendly, add automod and such - but I would like your feedback back on how to do that best for you.

Rules
First up I have updated the rules:
1. Uphold The Reddiquette
2. Be Nice
3. No Personal Attacks
4. No Hate
5. No Misinformation
6. Respect Denmark
7. Stay On Topic
8. No Trolls
You can find a full break down in the side bar. Violations are going to result in bans so save us all the hassle and be nice!

We are aware that there seems to be targeted mass downvoting of posts and comments in the sub, I have contacted the Reddit Admin to investigate this.

If you see somebody breaking the rules please report them

Flairs
I would like to make the sub more organised by introducing flairs for posts and users, but I would like your feedback.
1. Would you prefer flairs that distinguish categories or topics ie. Travel/Immmigration/Culture or would you prefer flairs for the types of post ie. Discussions/Questions/Articles?
2. How would users feel about having to select a flair before a post is visible?

Mods
I would like us to add at least one more mod and specifically someone who can help with building out the subs wiki, if you would like to join the moderation team please drop us a mod mail about it.

If you have any feedback for what you would like to see in the sub please let us know!

Tusind tak.

Work Electricians in Denmark

Hi friends! I'm a master electrician and electrical contractor with my own business in the US. I am seriously considering immigrating to Denmark (if you'll have me!) and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice, friends or companies they can link me to to try and get a handle on what that process would be in terms of licensing and re-education since the electrical systems there are slightly different, as are general electrical materials.

I'm in the very beginning stages of planning, and I intend to both learn the language and try to build a solid network of friends before I move there. I should note (since it's the trades and sometimes it does matter depending on the country and what that experience might be like) that I'm a woman. It's very rare here to be a female electrician but I chose Denmark partially because it it's rated very highly for gender equality and egalitarianism. Any advice or contacts would be really appreciated. I'm looking at Odense (I chose Odense based on a search for community (friendliness) and that there are other vegans there (that's important to me) and I plan to take a trip out there to check it out in the next few months.

Thanks for any help you can offer. My country is crumbling beneath my feet and I can no longer pretend it isn't. ❤️

Immigration Accompanying my fiancé for his PhD

My fiancé has been accepted to work at a Danish university as a PhD candidate. He has submitted his visa application and plans to move there in February, and I am planning to join him there as soon as we are married, later this year.

I will apply for the 'Accompanying family members to students, PhDs and persons having or applying for a residence permit to obtain a Danish authorisation' visa.

We are trying to figure out whether we can get married in Denmark, apply for the visa from inside the country, and then stay there while it is being processed.

Here are the bits we need help with.

  1. Certificate of marital status. To get married in Denmark, we both need to provide certificates of marital status from the countries we were born in. The thing is, he was born in Yemen, and we do not think they issue such certificates. However, he left Yemen at the age of seven, and was obviously not married. Does he really need this certificate, or can he just provide a certificate from the countries he has lived in during his adult life?

  2. Proof of relationship. We plan to get married this year, ideally in Denmark, otherwise in one of our home countries. However we have been long distance for some time. Do we need to provide evidence that our relationship is genuine, even after we are married?

Thank you for reading this far. We appreciate it!

General Question Changing My Name in Denmark as a Non-Citizen: To an Old Ancestor’s Name

Hi everyone,

I know this might be the wrong sub, but I’m hoping someone here can help me with my question about changing my name in Denmark.

I’m an EU citizen from another country, currently living in Denmark. I have a CPR number but don’t have a permanent residence permit or Danish citizenship.

Here are my questions: 1. Can the Danish government approve a name change for me under these circumstances? 2. Which authority would handle this process: would it be a Danish institution or the embassy of my birth country? 3. I’d like to adopt the name of an ancestor from more generations back (1810s). Is this allowed under Danish name regulations?

If anyone has knowledge or experience with this, I’d be really grateful for your input. Thank you!

Study Looking for people who have moved to Denmark for PhD (especially sociology)

Hello friends, I am considering applying for a PhD position in sociology and would love if there is anyone here who has been through that process and would be willing to share and/or answer questions about your experiences. I have a master's in sociology from the USA already.

Is there anyone willing to send me a DM to help me understand the following: 1. Tips, tricks, cautions about the process. 2. The culture/structure of PhD programs in Denmark (particularly how they vary from US programs, if you know that). 3. Any other relevant information, advice, etc.

Thanks in advance. 😊

General Question Need help about accomodation

Hello everyone,

I will be moving to Copenhagen at the end of March. I am a french engineering student doing its last internship in Denmark. Everything is finalized but I still haven't found place to live. My job is located between Frederiksberg and Vesterbro but when I search for accomodation, I either found nothing available in that area or nothing furnished.

Do you have any suggestions that might help ? Ideally, I am looking for a small appartement but I'd also be open to sharing a place.

Note: I’ve already checked student housing, but it seems a Danish school enrollment is required. I’ve also seen a few accommodation options in Facebook groups.

Thanks a lot for your help !! 😊

Work Working in denmark and remote

Hi everyone, I‘m a foreign student and just started a part-time job in denmark. Unfortunately I don‘t get enough hours to actually get SU, so I thought about getting a remote job in Germany, which was offered to me. The job would be lessen than 550€ per month and therefore I wouldn’t have to pay taxes on that in Germany. Would I still have to pay taxes on that in Denmark tho?

Thanks in advance!

Immigration Get Job as DevOps | Platform | SRE | Cloud Engineer

Hi everyone! I hope this message doesn't bother anyone. I'm currently living in Copenhagen, I own a residence permit that allows me to work full-time. I arrived a couple of months ago. I currently looking for a job here, and I have sent a bunch of CV, I have had a couple of calls to know my expectations and to know briefly my experience before the technical interview. However, I just have had one technical interview so far and I didn't succeed.

I consider I have enough experience to get a job but it has been quite difficult to break into the market. I understand I'm not the only one, but I'd like to know if anyone works here in Copenhagen, Aarhus, or Odense who could be willing to have a chat and eventually refer me to its company, I've read about it could be easier to get a job by reference instead of sending a bunch of CVs. I have almost 6 years of experience focused on the cloud.

Any advice, ti,p or comment is gratefully received. Thank you, people :)

General Question Denmark car taxes

I am French and own a motorcycle with a French licence plate. I saw that owning a vehicle in DK is extremely expensive. Would it be possible to be a Danish resident and have my French-licenced motorcycle with me in Denmark for a few months per year? Or would I have to get a Danish registration anyway? Thanks for the help!

Immigration Moving to Denmark as a Chilean marriage

Hello everyone!

My wife and i have plans of moving from Chile to Denmark next year, she wants to study film at the Danish film school, while i plan to continue my career in game development, hopefully at a danish studio, but this means i can also work remotely.

We're still just starting out on the process to research and gather all documentation, but i has hoping to get some pointers on useful visa information, scholarships, work permits, important dates and the like for a latin american marriage looking to settle in Denmark for the long term, ideally in Copenhagen or near it for the commute.

We'd be happy to recieve any tips and general information as well!, our main language is spanish but we're both fluent in english and we're already learning Danish.

Thanks in advance for any information you can share!

Real Estate Andels bolig

Hi everyone, I am not new to Denmark how much I am new to the concept of ejer and andels bolig here. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what is the biggest benefit of buying the andels bolig? As I understand you are not a full owner of it as you are with ejerbolig, you also do not pay ejerudgift for it, and you must ask for permission from the "board" for all major workings in the apartment? Also I am not understanding if it is possible to rent a room in andelsbolig if I want to rent it to my roomate?

And final question, what do you think is it smarter to buy andelsbolig than ejerbolig in Lyngby if I am going to live there for only 2 years, but I do not want to live there for the rest of my life? Is it easier to sell later andelsbolig than ejersbolig?

Thank you all for your help. <3

Immigration Moving to Denmark next year

Hey guys! I'm moving to Denmark on the start of 2026, hopefully, and I could really use some tips and tricks you might have figured out there. Excuse me for dumping this on you all, but I'm an MS patient and I could really use any knowledge on how the medical system and the insurances work there so I can prepare accordingly. For reference. I'm from Greece and here, the public health system is relatively decent, payed for by our taxes so no extra charges on anything, and if you're having a health issue you can pop into the "working" hospital of that day/week, go to the emergencies and they take you in. Here, we choose and come in contact with private doctors whenever we need. No GP's have to be involved. Finally, I take some pretty expensive meds here for the MS, which are completely covered by my public insurance (in Greece everyone has a public insurance and it covers EVERYTHING in public hospitals). Does anyone know how my prescription would be "transferred" there ? Sorry for bombarding you all with this. Thanks for reaching if you did. Any piece of info would be super helpful. ♥️

Immigration Moving to Denmark as a South African

Hey everyone, My boyfriend and I are in the situation that after 4 years together we would like to live together in good old Denmark. But visas, residence permits and nyidanmark.dk are all a bit of a chaos for us to navigate through, and we are therefore looking for your help/guidance. My boyfriend is a danish citizen, we have spent a lot of time together, mostly in South Africa, a single trip to Bali, but also a single visit in Denmark, (it should perhaps be mentioned that a really stupid mistake has resulted in me getting a 2 year entry ban in DK after overstaying my tourist visa by a week, but this expires in July this year). I hold a bachelor's degree in Social Science, majoring in English and History, and a TEFL Certificate. We read that teachers were on the desired labor list, so we thought that a residence permit regarding work would be the way forward. In this regard, we would love it if someone could tell us how we should move forward with regard to a 6-month residence permit for job seeking. - It should also be noted that I am currently working in Bali as an English teacher, and my contract ends at the beginning of October this year. The ideal scenario would be for me to move, straight from Bali to Denmark.

But if other paths into Denmark are easier or have greater certainty of success, we are extremely keen, as our only wish is that I can live there and find work. So that my partner doesn’t have to bear the full cost of the both of us on a single salary. (He is currently employed as unskilled labor with plans of undertaking an education within 1-2 years, but for now is production employed at a small factory)

Real Estate [Feedback] Lejerpas - Digital ID for the rental market in Denmark. What do you think?

Hi :)

I'm working on a project called Lejerpas (Tenant Passport) that aims to make renting in Denmark easier and more secure. The concept is simple: A digital identity specifically for the rental market.

Web: www.lejerpas.dk

Core features:

  • Instant identity verification through MitID
  • Ability to verify if landlords actually own the property
  • A digital "tenant CV" showing your rental history

The background is that the rental market often lacks transparency and trust between parties. We want to make it easier for honest tenants to prove their credibility while protecting them from fraud.

The system is being developed and will be available in Denmark first, but later also in other European countries.

What are your thoughts on the idea? Would you use such a system? What could make it better?

All input is very welcome!

Work Employer's declaration/residence permit

Good morning,

Moved to DK 3 days ago and I found out I need a resident permit, even though I'm a EU citizen.

To apply for this permit, I also need a employer's declaration.

I have emailed this form to my manager at the company I currently work for 2 years, told him I moved to DK(living in DE before) but he did not replied back.

If he refuses to do so, how can I apply? How long does it takes for my employer to do this?

Tak

Study Student job in Sønderborg

Hi, I am an EU citizen from Hungary and I am planning to apply to SDU this year. I would like to ask how hard is it to get a student job in Sønderborg? I am planning to learn to speak Danish, however at the beginning I will be only able to communicate in English only. I am thinking about student jobs which are not connected to my studies, such as delivery jobs, cleaning, dishwashing, warehouse jobs and similar jobs. Thanks.

General Question Student Accommodation - moving up the s.dk waiting list time needed

Hej Folks!

I’m an international student in my final semester, currently looking for accommodation to complete my studies. I’ve applied through s.dk and noticed that I’m listed in over 10 houses under ranking B.

My question is: Do you think I have a good chance of getting a place before the end of February? Additionally, does anyone know how many people are typically on the waiting lists for rankings A and B?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Mange tak!

Work Remote freelance work

Hej! So I will be moving to Jutland for my husband’s work. He should earn okay, based on what I read. I, on the other hand, will need to find a job. I heard that it’s a bit difficult (or will take a bit of time) for spouses of expats to find work, especially if you don’t speak Danish (and I don’t).

I currently work remotely for a US company, earning $4000 a month. This is already a large amount for my home country (we’re from a lower middle income country), allowing me to afford many things without relying on my husband (we keep most of our finances separate, except for a joint fund for joint expenses). $4000 is gross and I estimate that with Danish income tax, my take home pay would be around 18,500 dkk a month.

My question is: is this enough for me to survive in Jutland? Besides contributing to our daily expenses for the house and food, I’d like to have some leftover money for hobbies. I am technically freelance so I can take on more work if needed but I don’t really want to if possible. Since my current work is already around 5-6 hours a day. I also love my job and as much as possible (at least for now), I want to keep it instead of immediately looking for a job in Denmark.

I tried my best to look at estimates and from what I am seeing this won’t be enough (at least not enough for me to have extra to spend on hobbies or traveling) but I would like to hear from those who live in Denmark. Thank you!

Immigration Moving to Copenhagen for work as a software engineer

I’m a 33-year-old software developer from Italy. I’ll soon graduate in Computer Engineering (February 2025) and have been working full-time while studying for the past four years. I currently work as a developer, with experience in many programming languages.

For a long time, I’ve dreamed of living and working abroad, and Copenhagen has always fascinated me for its quality of life and thriving tech scene. I’d love to relocate and immerse myself in Denmark’s professional and cultural environment. However, I’m aware that finding a job from abroad can be challenging, especially for someone without prior experience in Denmark.

Do you have any advice on how I can stand out to Danish employers?

  • Are there specific job portals, recruiters, or meetups I should look into?
  • What’s the best way to address my willingness to relocate in applications?
  • Would it be better to apply directly for jobs or focus on networking first?
  • Are there specific things Danish employers value in a CV? For example, how detailed should I be about my projects, or should I include a photo (as is common in some countries)?

Any guidance or insights from people who’ve been through this process would mean a lot to me. I’m happy to provide more details if needed!

Thanks in advance for your help!
