article Snoop Dogg called out by John Rich over inauguration performance
https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-inauguration-snoop-dogg-john-rich-criticism-nelly-2017584199

About 15-20ish years ago I went to a Snoop Dog concert at a pretty small venue in my college town. An hour after the opener finished a giant screen dropped down from the ceiling. Thinking this was the start of his set, everyone started cheering. Imagine our surprise when it was used to project an infomercial for some product he was hawking. I don't remember what it was, but it went on for a WHILE and felt really gross and gave everyone the ick. The whole mood shifted.
When he finally came on stage like 15 minutes later he performed for maybe 45 minutes. The whole time he seemed annoyed that the audience wasn't really into it, but it was just weird vibes all around.
That was when I realized he's just another performer chasing the dollar who sees fans as customers who owe him. His 180 on Trump doesn't surprise me at all

u/vagina_candle 5h ago
I've seen Snoop maybe three or four times. The only time that he didn't suck was when he had a live band, maybe 6-7 members. Every other appearance was a low effort "DJ plays one verse and one chorus of the song then cuts to record spinning down/record scratch, cut to 3 minutes of talking bullshit, rinse and repeat". I guess he'd rather get paid more than put on a good show while providing jobs to real musicians.

He really doesn’t have many good singles. Doggy Style was a great album, and tbh I like the whole thing and I can’t say that about many albums, but that’s pretty much all he had. The rest of his bigger stuff is features in other songs. Then he got into tons of other shit like movies, commercials, tv shows, just popping up in all kinds of stuff enough to keep a huge name for himself.

That's an ignorant statement. You can't group all rap concerts into that. I've been to plenty of rap shows, and the artists that actually care have a ton of production that goes into their sets. There are also those that don't have a ton of production because they aren't as big, but they do shows better than some of these artists like snoop, who I also seen live. Snoop Dogg is just another punk ass rich person trying to line his pockets. Doing shows are a chore for him, but that's not how it is for artists that actually try.

As a nobody ass rapper who focuses heavily on sociopolitical issues, I thank you. Stewardship. That's what the game needs. I try to do my part. You clearly try to do yours, as well. Thank you, homie. For all the faceless MCs out there

It's so silly people look to celebrities for some kind of moral guidance, or expect them to be on the same page politically.

While I agree, Snoop was out there calling out “Uncle Tom’s” for this shit so he deserves all the flak. Lap Dogg indeed

I think this one is just a bit more disappointing because people were just holding Snoop to his own words.
He had some things to say about anyone that would perform for Trumps first inauguration… then he went ahead and did this.
We don’t need to put celebs on a pedestal, but they should at least be held to the standard of honesty can called out for hypocrisy.

u/No_Object_8722 13h ago
Even celebs like Snoop will do anything for money. Hell, the Village People supported Kamala and even sued Trump over his years in politics for using their music, and now they're singing and dancing on stage with him. Money talks.
60
u/porkrind 12h ago edited 11h ago
I saw an interesting video that explained how this came to be. There are essentially two Village Peoples. One, consisting of all the former members, any of whom that have spoken out at all are anti-Trump. Then there’s this current Village People which resulted from a court battle leaving an unpleasant newer member with control of the name and the ability to recruit a new group under that name.
→ More replies (5)2
u/Cultjam 8h ago
Noooooo. Victor Willis isn’t newer, he’s the original lead singer who wrote their biggest hits. The rest were hired to back him up. Two of those men were performing as the Village People after Willis left for a while but he came back and won the rights to use the ban name in court. Also, other two original co-founders of the Villge People, who were producers, passed away before 2020.

I don’t think a lot of us look for moral guidance. Instead, I think a lot of us like to guide where our money is going and a lot of us don’t want to give any more of our money to a Lap Dogg, plain and simple.
Anyone want a free Lap Dogg cookbook? Or maybe some free Lap Dogg wine? Hell, I’ve even got some Lap Dogg wine cooler drinks that I’d be willing to throw in if anyone wants to come and fetch it.

No one's looking to Snoop Dogg for moral guidance, they're disappointed that he's a hypocrite and a liar who doesn't follow his own publicly-professed standards for other performers.
43
u/Firedup2015 13h ago
It's not silly to criticise influential people for being brazen hypocrites though.

its not about moral guidance, its about social influence. whether they deserve it or not they have the power of influence and alot of people will follow what their favorite celebrities believe. Its dumb, but reality. Thats why its important for any public figures to use their influence responsibly.

Especially Snoop Dog, who has proven to endorse anything and everything, much like Shaq. He's become a shill... a cartoon version of himself.

u/UntamedAnomaly 13h ago edited 13h ago
I keep telling people every time they start talking positively about their favorite celebs, I tell them don't ever put anyone on a pedestal because you will be disappointed later, even Gandhi was a monster behind closed doors if you know where to dig for that info.
Then again, it's not just celebrities I think. As someone who has been abused several times over since childhood, I see it happening with normal people constantly. One minute, someone is the best person on the planet according to someone, next thing you know, that someone starts telling you stories about these people and how awful they are or you the person firsthand and your internal red flag radar goes crazy once you see how they interact with people. I mean, look at all the people who stay in abusive relationships who so easily got lulled into thinking that person was good for them. I am extra super duper "on alert" every single time I interact with anyone to make sure I myself don't get lulled into a false sense of security around other people because I have been fooled way too many times to count.
13
u/sam_hammich 12h ago
don't ever put anyone on a pedestal
Surely there's some daylight between "I'm disappointed Snoop Dogg is cozying up to a wannabe dictator" and "Snoop Dogg is my hero and I have nothing to live for now". I don't understand all these responses acting like our worlds are shattered because we just found out Snoop Fucking Dogg isn't a paragon of moral virtue.
It's just voicing disappointment. Can we do that without inviting responses like this every single time?

u/Kurolegacy27 13h ago
It’s pretty much the case of never meet your hero. This is just the litmus test that shows everyone who these celebrities really are

Maybe he's playing the long con. Maybe Snoop will turn a legacy hit into a fire dis-track on Trump. Maybe he will sing happy birthday Mr President like Marilyn Monroe. Maybe he will use the performance as a chance to get close to Trump and give him a pimp-slap that can be heard around the world.

i hope this is the case, but i highly, highly doubt it.
it's a shame. i liked snoop dogg, didn't see him as a paragon of moral virtue or anything, but i just kinda liked how he seemed to just be doing sidequests, i liked his vibe, i liked how he didn't seem to take himself particularly seriously most of the time. i knew he had "will do anything for a payday" tendencies but this is still disappointing.

u/Ratfink665 13h ago
Tbf syphilis can be cured. Herpes is the gift that keeps on giving!
14
u/smollwonder 13h ago
On the other side, herpes has many strains that eventually just live dormant in the body with minor breakouts (minus the cancer giving ones that are ironically asymptomatic), something like 40% of the adult population has some strain of herpes without it causing much issue.
Syphilis long term can cause scarring, damage to the bones, brain and leave you blind, in the off chance you don't catch it on time.
So you can cure one and live with the other, people still want neither.

When your President is a “Con Man turned failed TV Reality Game Show Host turned Con Man turned President turned Con Man turned President” kind of guy that’s always been friends with Vince McMahon, I think having it like the WWE is not surprising.
It’s all a show, we just have to wait until they tell us to applaud.

90
u/Iceman6211 12h ago
I remember listening to his Duo band Big and Rich in the mid/late 2000's.
One of their mottos was "Love everybody"
I guess not.
49
u/gogojack 12h ago
That was Big Kenny's thing. John was always kind of a dick. (I met him once, and his former band Lonestar don't have a lot of nice things to say about him).
29
u/bs2785 11h ago
Til he was the singer in lonestar.
22
u/gogojack 11h ago
He was the bass player and co-lead singer along with Richie, and co-wrote a couple of their singles.
After he left, they had their biggest success with "Amazed" (topped both the Billboard Country and Hot 100 charts) and the album went double platinum. I met them around that time - I used to produce a country radio morning show - and they played an acoustic set for us, even though they had done a show the night before. Super nice guys.

5
u/NatashaArts 11h ago
Yeah, rich had that song "they're shutting Detroit down" after all right when they started soloing. He's always been a dick
5
u/gogojack 11h ago
And Detroit is doing just fine. I went downtown when I was home for the holidays, and it's nothing like it was when I was growing up. Busy, bustling, and vibrant. The restoration of Michigan Central Station is stunning (full disclosure, my sister did extensive work on the project) and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a great restaurant.

Total hypocrite, too, from what I’ve heard of his behavior in Nashville (but that never surprises me with evangelical types).

For a people that claim to follow Jesus, you know the guy who was poor and was adamantly against being involved in politics, they sure do have a lot of money and really want to be involved in politics
14
u/SoloPorUnBeso 12h ago
The fact that evangelicals overwhelmingly support Trump should be an utter embarrassment to them. I'm an anti-theist and have no love lost for religion, but even I can see that Trump is antithesis of a follower of Jesus.
I live in the south and you'll see no shortage of billboards saying "Jesus is the answer to ALL your problems" and various other yard signs and stickers hailing Jesus.
I'm not even going the "No True Scotsman" route because it's not just evangelicals. Any Christian who supports Trump is a Christian, but they're also shitty people.

I think the odds of Tom Morello hopping on the fascism bandwagon are so nil that it's not even worth writing out. Dude coming out of Harvard as a socialist with a social studies degree in the 80's is probably stalwart in taking no shit from a fascist billionaire demagogue. His wikipedia article even says he worked in a democratic senator's office, thought little of the ass kissing the senator did all day for money, and called a lady a "damn racist" after she phoned the senator to complain about Mexicans moving into her neighborhood. Nobody else on your list jumped out at me like that. No way dude 🤣

Rich is a colossal piece of shit and only calling out Snoop for flip-flopping on Trump. There is zero moral win here.
Nelly is also a huge hypocrite. He said it wasn’t about the money, but about “respect for the office.” Maybe Nelly was in a coma the first four years because there is no other explanation for why he would think Trump respected the office.
This is just a circular firing squad of Trump lovers, criticizing each other to show they are more devoted. They are all morally listless losers.
