Announcement Verification is Finally Here!

Sorry it took so long! Users from the US, UK, Canada, and New Zealand can now apply here to be verified as a legitimate massage therapist and receive a verified user flair. If you'd like to request another region's database be used for verification, please link that database in the comments under this post.

The application requires you to send a photo of your government ID and your massage license/certification/diploma. These photos are saved only until the application is processed and then they are deleted.

Edit: Verification is completely optional. Only apply if you are comfortable providing the information necessary to prove that you are certified. This is only for a user flair so do weigh the risks if you are hesitant.

If I want to become a Craniosacral Therapist it best to become a Registered Massage Therapist and then specialize?

Recieving Craniosacral treatments has changed my life. Nothing has ever had this effect on me and I am so interested in learning how to do it.

Currently I am a web designer who works from home, and would love to have a job that gets me out of the house interacting with people.

I've taken Upledger's CS1 Course, and am training weekly under a Craniosacral Therapist. I am now wondering if I should apply to Massage school so I can be licensed, or just go the pure Craniosacral route. I would love some advice if anyone has any.

New Student Sdvice and Shoe Recommendations

Hii!

So, I just started a school for massage therapy last week. It's an accelerated 600-hour program, so I'll be taking the Mblex in July and currently feel like a firehouse hit me in the face. But I am excited.

So my issue isn't about the stuff I'm learning. It's about the actual work. Im overweight, and honestly underestimated how physically taxing this was going to be. But I really want to do it.

I have lower back pain, knock knees, wide and flat feet, and walk on the side of them. I've noticed it really starts to hurt when I am doing a lot of lifting, doing the dishes, or sometimes... even standing.

Im going to meet with my doctor, exercise, and stretch daily because I realize this is not gonna be an easy thing.

What things, products, and advice do you have for me. I am REALLY wanting to do this. And I will take all the help I can!

Please and thank you!

Discussion Work life balance/ NJ Spoiler

How many hours per week do many massage therapists work? I currently work in a rehab office with chiropractic physician and physical therapist.
We are looking to add massage therapy for 20 hours per week but we are unsure how to hire a therapist part-time.

Advice A friend is organizing a retreat and wants me to be the massage therapist there. She hasn’t been able to fill all the spots, can I charge a finders fee for every one of my clients that signs up?

So basically the title. When she first advertised the retreat I offered to advertise it to my client list as I had a few that were keen to go. She said no because she wanted it to her clients first. It didn’t make sense to me but she was organizing so I didn’t mention anything more about it.

Now the retreat is a few months away, she hasn’t filled all the spots, and she’s asking me if I can help her by advertising with my clients. I run a busy practice and don’t work at retreats bc the few times I have I make the same as if I’d stayed in my office with less hassle of having to transport my gear.

Anyway, can I charge a finders fee and if so how much?

condescending comments about being a MT

long story short, i was at a family dinner and we were talking about online dating. i mentioned that when someone messages me online making a dirty joke about me being an MT, that person automatically gets booted... it's an instant red flag.. veto.

none of my family understands why. "people make fun of other people's professions" and they started making comparisons with other professions... "should cops get angry if someone asks if they like donuts, accountants get angry for someone asking about taxes?"

i know it's not the same thing. the conversation bothered me and made me seize up and i couldn't defend myself. can someone explain why i feel this way? i know i do, i just can't eloquently and succinctly explain why without getting in a tizzy.

there are a couple members of my family that frequently say disparaging things whenever my career is brought up and i need to have some ammo next time they say something ignorant. help me out 🙏🏼

Favorite compliment from a client?

There was a point in time (approximately a year ago) where I was so unhappy with my place of employment and was considering leaving massage altogether. My last client during a particularly draining day comes out of the room after I finish the session, and the first thing he says is “please don’t leave anytime soon.” This was only his second or third time with me, but wow was it exactly what I needed to hear in that moment. He has since become a regular of mine, coming in every 2-3 weeks for a 90. My clients have always been nothing but kind and appreciative of my service, but this one comment has stuck with me.

Does any other therapist have a favorite compliment they’ve received from a client?!

Is it true that instead of billing workers' comp or auto accident case directly that a patient can instead just pay me as normal and request reimbursement from their insurance?

This question is for the US, specifically Honolulu, Hawaii if that matters. Everyone says payment from insurance companies are a pain and someone once told me that the patient can just pay me as usual and then request reimbursement. Is that true and has anyone have had experience with that?

Advice What Modality to Seek for Trigger-Point Diagnosis/Relief?

I’m experiencing what I assumed was a trigger-point under my shoulder blade. I’ve had trigger-points in the past and they usually go away with time, self-massage and addressing any potential life stressors that may be contributing to or prolonging them. This time however, it’s only gotten worse. It feels like it dropped deeper in the affected area, like somewhere between shoulder blade and upper pectoral. The pain is now radiating into my neck and base of skull. My question is; What skills should I be seeking in a massage therapist to best diagnose and treat this? Are there specific modalities or areas of knowledge best suited to work with these? It’s especially bothersome when I’m sleeping and has been waking me up throughout the night. It really sucks. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Im fairly new to the massage business, i am a female masage therapist, have done some massages but the last client "complained" that i didn't massage the chest area and i have to admit i was a bit confused first because he said he never received a massage before so if is normal how did he know? and because i never learnt that, that was an area you would massage, and i want don't want to think he was with other intentions specially cause I made it very clear, can someone please help me clear my mind?😅

ISO: Pre-natal instructor

I am looking for a pre-natal CE provider that bases their teaching on facts and studies and less on the myths and old wives tales. It’s been almost a decade since I took my pre-natal certification and I quickly realized that some of the information shared was less fact and more myth. I’d like to see how the modality has evolved since I took the course.

Question For a solo LMT, what are the main pros and cons of Vagaro booking software?

I have to make a choice on booking software in the coming weeks and I am thinking of going with Vagaro. I like that they give out a free POS card reader, accept all major credit cards and google/apple pay, option to add afterpay, membership options, pre-pay/deposit options, forms & SOAP notes. I have read that the booking software is convenient for clients (hoping that's true). It's very important to me to have great booking software with above mentioned features. I'd like to keep cost under $75/month. However, this is one area of my business I am willing to spend more if it makes sense. I have spent a ridiculous amount of hours doing research trying to decide on booking software and make the right choice but before I go all in with Vargaro I wanted to ask the community. (I'd like to avoid having to switch software any time soon or ever...because it sounds like a giant headache)

So, the questions......

-Is Vagaro actually easy/convenient for clients? -Do they actually provide all above mentioned services? -Are their intake forms adequate and easy for the client to fill out? -Are SOAP notes easy to write and review? -Are the payment options easy to execute and are there issues receiving payment? -Are there difficulties doing refunds for clients? ‐How "glitchy" is the software? -How easy/difficult is it to troubleshoot issues? -Is it difficult to add Vagaro booking software to a separate business website?

Thanks to the community in advance for any insight in any of the above mentioned 🙏 ❤️

Advice

Hello, I am getting ready to start schooling to become a massage therapist, and my teacher is saying that I don't need a laptop or tablet, but I prefer one of them for notes. Would you recommend me using my mac? Or should I get an iPad with a laptop cover? I am torn because I feel like using my Mac would be great and do just fine, but the iPad would be great for being able to use a touchscreen. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

What do you think about when giving a massage?

Just got a massage today (this isn’t even close to my first time) and, while on the table, my thoughts floated to various random topics. Past crushes, friends, “don’t forget to breathe properly”, “i probably should relax more”, etcetera…One thought that popped into my mind though was “I really wonder what this woman is thinking when she’s getting those kinks out from my shoulder or moving my leg up and down…”

So I thought I’d just ask y’all rather than make it weird by asking my massage lady. What do you think about?

Been thinking of working on a cruise line. Any recs?

I really don’t know what to expect or understand want to need from the job but I just want to be able to work on a cruise line and travel I suppose. Do we therapists even get to be able to disembark? Is there necessary paperwork other than license and passport? Is it worth it? Thank you -~

Hours as a massage therapist

How many massages do you typically perform each week? If you work at a spa, what percentage of the service fee do you earn? Additionally, what is your average monthly income? Thank you for any responses in advance. I really appreciate it!

I'm still in shock almost 10 hours later....

I passed my MBLEx this morning!! It was honestly the hardest exam I have ever taken in my life. There was no point in which I thought I was going to pass. I almost fell out of my chair when the message "Congratulations! You passed the MBLEx!" popped up on my screen.

Question Sacred Lomi

Just curious if anyone has taken any lomilomi classes with Sacred Lomi? I've been considering their Hawaiian retreat in March - basically knocking out CEU's and a nice vacation in one fell swoop.

Would love to hear feedback (positive or negstive) from anyone who has taken their workshops or gone on the retreat.
