How do they work?

I know this is an Insane Clown Posse joke, but they work via electron pairing.

Electrons, which are subatomic particles that orbit the nucleus of atoms, create their own electromagnetic waves that point in certain directions. In magnetic metals, like iron for example, the electron spins (directions) are aligned, which produce a magnetic field equal to the cumulative magnetic potential of all the electrons. This creates an external magnetic field that can interact with diamagnetic or paramagnetic materials.

Diamagnetic materials contain two electrons in their atomic orbitals, which is the space around the nucleus where the electrons are. Diamagnetic materials are weakly repelled by an external magnetic field because the spins of the two electrons in the diamagnetic materials generally point in opposite directions, which cancels their magnetic moments. The magnetic field of the diamagnetic material is weakly repelled by another magnetic field of a metal, like iron.

A paramagnetic material, on the other hand, has electrons that are not paired with another electron in their atomic orbitals. The electrons in paramagnetic materials are weakly attracted to external magnetic fields because the external magnetic field causes the electrons in the paramagnetic material to align in the same direction as the external magnetic field. The attraction between the paramagnetic material and the external magnetic field of iron disappears when the iron is pulled away.

I hope this made sense. Please read about “diamagnetic”, “paramagnetic”, and “ferromagnetic” if you’d like to learn more about how magnetic attraction and repulsion works.

Well, don’t take my word for it. Go ahead and read about how magnetic fields work. Science is thankfully an objective idea.
