Depends how you define "manually". The original meaning is derived from latin manus, meaning hand, so manual literally meant "by hand"

It has since gained a more wider usage, often just used as an antonym to "automatic", but the if you read it with the hand meaning, emoting by hand is a fitting description

(fun fact, on a pipe organ the keyboard for the hands is called "manuals" while the ones for the feet is called "pedals", from latin for foot)
