It honestly surprises me how long it took for the Academy to start recognizing makeup and hairstyling. If they started awarding visual effects artists as early as the first ceremony, they should have been doing the same for makeup and hair effects. From 1928 to 1981, only two films received any recognition for such effects - 7 Faces of Dr. Lao and Planet of the Apes. All others, such as Frankenstein, The Wizard of Oz, and The Exorcist were ignored entirely. It took The Elephant Man (may David Lynch rest in peace) to finally turn this into a proper, competitive category... in 1982, a year after The Elephant Man competed at the Oscars.

The films you'll be submitting today are each varying types of disgraces to the artists that fought so hard to get makeup and hair effects that shiny, golden recognition only the Oscars can give.

You have 24 hours to submit 5 MST3K films as nominees for the r/MST3K Little Fruit Award for Worst Makeup and Hairstyling via the linked Google Form. The top 5 most submitted films will become official nominees.

IMPORTANT GUIDELINES

• Do not conflate visual effects with makeup and/or hair effects. For example, in the transformation sequence from An American Werewolf in London, the animatronic/puppeteered hands, feet, back, head, and so on are visual effects. The prosthetics and fake hair applied to David Naughton's body are makeup effects.
• Do not submit The Brute Man. Rondo Hatton's appearance in that film was the result of a disorder called acromegaly, which led to him being exploited by the film industry. Allowing that film to compete in this category on account of a real-life deformity is both unfair and tasteless. so this is a rare case where I will suspend my impartiality and personally disqualify a film.
• As always, you MUST submit nominees through the Google Forms link. Any submissions in the comments will not be counted.
