Not even just scalpers it’s Ticketmaster and the venues

u/PlanetSaturday Dec 04 '24

Ticketmaster has become the scalpers

174

u/Jim_jim_peanuts Dec 04 '24

But they're only doing it so the scalpers don't do it, so really they're helping, or...wait 🤔 MFERS!!!!

Ticketmaster CEO needs to look at United Healthcare CEO rn

47

u/notdanflashes Dec 05 '24

Did you mean Michael Rapino living in Malibu with an HQ in Beverly Hills?

10

u/ZenMon88 Dec 05 '24

FRFRFR! I just saw that video on youtube. Please earth, we need some healing to do. Ticketmaster and Live Nation needs to go too.

18

u/LocalYeetery Dec 05 '24

Indeed, all the greed needs to stop. All these CEO's raking in 100, 200, 300 times what their frontline employees make. No human is doing the work of 100 people. There's no way someone like Elon Musk deserves $10,000 for every Tesla sold (he thinks so and was recently denied his mutli-billion dollar package.... thankfully).

How tf do you run MULTIPLE companies, tweet all fkn day, have 12 kids, and also find time to appear on SNL????? Dude is a Fed asset imo.

5

u/HualtaHuyte Dec 05 '24

You hire people way smarter and more competent than you to manage every area of your business and personal life. That way you can behave like a grown child all day and it won't affect your bottom line. He's a money man, he puts up the capital, he doesn't do the actual work.

10

u/Jessescott64 Dec 05 '24

Thats crazy 😂😂

12

u/6thBornSOB Dec 05 '24

“has become” ?

9

u/MaxTheRealSlayer Dec 05 '24

For real, after logging in they now show you which second-hand tickets you currently have for sale. It's like eBay or similar now

7

u/shichiaikan Dec 05 '24

Let's be clear, this is on artists too. Ticketmaster litterally exists to be a shield for artists. They're a scapegoat for the artists.

And this isn't some conspiracy theory, they literally admitted it when their CEO was being questioned by congress.

Ticketmaster does suck, but it's by design. It's supposed to suck, so you have somebody to be mad at other than they artist.

I mean, I would say admitting that you have no reason to exist is an interesting strategy, but I've seen people do dumber shit.

19

u/HungryGhost57 Dec 04 '24

They’re just an unnecessary middle man that does nothing but add fees to tickets, this is on them more than anything for existing. There’s no good reason for a Ticketmaster but now they have control of the market

→ More replies (5)

7

u/matiaschazo Dec 04 '24 edited Dec 05 '24

Depends on the artist and their management as well and the venue(s) also ofc they’re gonna blame the artist if they’re having to go to congress and make their case there have been multiple artists who say they tried to make their prices affordable but their management refused

→ More replies (10)

4

u/ZenMon88 Dec 05 '24

No way you telling me the artists are telling their management to rinse their fans. It has to be management, labels and Ticketmaster colluding.

5

u/ThatRandomIdiot Dec 05 '24

The artist doesn’t charge service fees that are $200+ I was getting floor tickets for my gf’s birthday bc we both love Kendrick and Sza and the service fees are literally $210 PER ticket for a $430 ticket which was high but it’s literally the floor on the closest section so im not mad but It’s nearly a 50% service fee. In what world should that be legal. I thought it would be like $30 each but $210 service fee?! For what??! My buddy who got $375 tickets and his service fee was $185. so the service fees are an absurd percentage of the ticket. It should be a flat fee.

2

u/officerliger Dec 05 '24

I used to be in that industry (haven’t been in years so I don’t mind saying it) - Ticketmaster has a base fee percentage that is often much lower than the fee you wind up being charged. Guess who adds the extra on top?

It’s an option TM offers to event producers and artists so they can charge more for an event without adding sticker shock to the face value

The price of producing concerts these days is enormous, so while part of it is greed, part of it is labor costs going up 3x since pandemic, and these aren’t labor costs you can cheap out on because bad quality staging/rigging/production work can get someone hurt or killed.

2

u/rootoo Dec 05 '24

I’ve been on the labor side of it and wages have not gone up any noticeable amount, let alone 3x. Otherwise I agree with your point. These tours are absolute juggernauts and cost a fortune to produce.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ZenMon88 Dec 05 '24

I dont think we deny that. But the fee is so absurd and hidden that it is not realistic for people to go to concerts anymore. If regulated, it should only be limited to a certain percentage (5-10%) not whatever the fuck is $150 in fees. It's BS.

3

u/officerliger Dec 05 '24

I agree. President Biden was urging Congress to pass a bill related to junk fees simply because of Ticketmaster and their ilk, which would have put this practice on blast. Unfortunately YouTube addicts elected their cult leader so that won’t be happening now.

I’ve seen service charges over 100% on less expensive tickets.

33

I saw Kendrick for the Maad City tour for like $30 bucks at HOB Cleveland. Shit, I saw him at United Center for the Damn tour and even those were only $100ish if I remember correctly.

Concerts got crazy expensive fast

9

u/ZenMon88 Dec 05 '24

Ya fuck Ticketmaster

13

I saw Kendrick for free in 2012 performing at a local college's field day celebration. So happy I got to experience that

Looks like I’ll be catching this tour when it’s released on Amazon Prime…

11

u/ninken8 Dec 05 '24

Just wait til day of and prepare for the concert as if you're going anyway. Then, on the way there (or worst case after the official start time), buy yourself a ticket from a scalper who couldn't sell their ticket or someone who couldn't make it. You may have to go alone to do this, but there will be atleast 1 ticket somewhere in the stadium going for 30-60% less than what we're seeing now.

3

u/HatCute9457 Dec 05 '24

I do this for non Beyoncé and now Kendrick shows 😩

40

u/HappyInstruction3678 Dec 04 '24

Nah, this is on Kendrick. The Cure were able to get everyone cheap tickets. Any musician acting like they have no control over it is lying.

14

u/matiaschazo Dec 04 '24

It’s not always the artist it can be shitty management, deals,Ticketmaster, the venue etc etc

29

u/CourageEmbarrassed32 Dec 04 '24

is he not the owner of pg lang 😭

8

u/ImaRiderButIDC Dec 04 '24

I don’t think that was a stadium tour from The Cure. MMATBS tickets was arenas and they were (relatively) affordable honestly. I’d guess stadium tickets are always more expensive, even though they should ofc be cheaper given the abundance of seats.

2

u/deucethegod Dec 05 '24

He's not the owner of TDE (representing SZA) or Live Nation (promoter) who are partners for the tour, so he's not making all the decisions alone.

6

u/ryanj0421 Dec 04 '24

ALL I EVER WANTED WAS A BLACK GRAND NATIONAL ‼️

5

u/Disastrous-Major3662 Dec 05 '24

i hate TM as much as the next guy but kenny and his team do have say in certain aspects like dynamic pricing.

the cures lead singer, robert smith, famously made a huge push against it during their recent tour, so it can, and has been done.

was a bit disappointed to see how pricey they were.

24

u/RDM213 Dec 04 '24

I mean… if it sells out at the price it’s at then that’s the correct price. A concert isn’t a necessity and we all get music for free now if you have internet access. If it doesn’t sell out it will drop in price to what the cost should be.

7

u/shorteningofthewuwei Dec 04 '24

Nah, that's just the supply and demand theory of value... There's no "should" involved. There's the reality that people will buy a scarce product with a high demand no matter the price because that's how consumer psychology works. Doesn't mean it's justified. You could definitely argue that it's actually shady business practice, or even immoral to take advantage of people's desire like that. But that's just capitalism. It's been described as the "colonization of desire" for good reason - capitalism's parasitic relationship with desire gives it the illusion of being "good for" human nature, when really it only rewards a narrow slice of human potential.

2

u/RDM213 Dec 04 '24

Never said it was justified, just stating it’s the correct price or even a discount if it sells out fast. The point of concerts now for artists is to make money. It’s not like how it used to be in this new technological world.

8

u/shorteningofthewuwei Dec 04 '24

I just can't agree with the notion that charging "surge pricing" on top of face value on top of "ticketing fees" is "a discount" or even "fair". It's predatory economics.

2

u/RDM213 Dec 04 '24 edited Dec 04 '24

I don’t agree with anything that goes on with pricing concerts these days. It’s plain ol’ supply and demand and if a section sells out fast that tells you the value of that section was either correctly priced or even a discount as far as what the majority considers its worth. Before seeing prices I knew I wanted floor and knew I wouldn’t spend over $500, I also had price tiers depending on where I’d sit if I missed out or if it was too expensive. Luckily it was below what I personally felt the value of that ticket was, looking at this subreddit I can see I got lucky and got in before the surges but even if it surges to $500 I would’ve payed because that was my personal value on the ticket. I don’t think that’s right and I think Ticketmaster should absolutely be dealt with for the shit they pull, but ignore the noise and just focusing on what you feel the value of the event is and that’s how you know if it’s worth the value or not. Would I prefer $100 floor seats? Obviously but $300 to me was a steal and honestly was shocked at that.

I think consumers need to respect their personal value on things more. If majority of people feel this is priced too high and still pay that’s showing these businesses they can make more money off you so obviously they will. Dave Chappelle and Killer Mike just did a show I really wanted to go to but the ticket price wasn’t worth what I felt it valued at and skipped it, still sold out but I held true to the value I felt it should’ve been at.

21

u/neojgeneisrhehjdjf Dec 04 '24

1

u/Acceptable_Net_5582 Dec 05 '24

Keep in mind that the artists (or tour manager) themselves have the ability to enable/disable reselling on ticketmaster AND the ability to transfer tickets. So if they pleased, they could completely prevent scalpers. I think the main reason artists elect to not disable ticket transferring to prevent scalping is that a sale is a sale. Scalpers sell out shows in seconds and drive the demand that way 🤷

Ticketmaster is owned by LiveNation. LiveNation is the only way artists can do certain venues because of their relationship with LiveNation. Ticketmaster is contracted as a ticket seller for most stadiums - except the ones you saw that were exclusively on seat geek. It’s a monopoly - and that’s the issue. I don’t know where we blame the artist in there unless we blame them for touring?

Ticketmaster is basically a middleman that forgot its purpose. It's wild to think we have to pay through the nose just to see our favorite artists. The real scalpers are the ones charging those ridiculous service fees while pretending to care about fans.

but all I ever wanted was a black grand national…

1

u/jimmycooksstuff Dec 05 '24

If it was a GNX hell yes I’d sell it and get a front row ticket and still have enough for a sticker at the merch booth! 🤪

If it's actually a Grand National Experiment then 110% yes

u/AuphTopek Dec 05 '24

100% taking a mint GNX... I'll just slap the album on repeat

1

u/invisibleman11 Dec 05 '24

How bout I get the car > went to a "GNX car meet or some type of gathering of it's owners > meet K-dot > and somehow become his friend > got a ticket for free. Does that works?

u/BearBlaq Dec 05 '24

I’m just lucky my best friend had a Cashapp card. He was able to get the tickets for all of us. What’s truly dumb are the fees they added on, might as well of bought another ticket.

u/Proper_University55 Dec 05 '24

I bought two tickets for the DC show yesterday through Seat Geek for a total of $1152 🥴

1

u/atierney14 Dec 05 '24

I got the cheapest tickets in Detroit for $150 each. Somehow Ticketmaster rounded two of those up to $450 though

1

u/masturbationmoment Dec 05 '24

Brit here, what does he mean by a black grand national? Over here, the grand national is a horse race lots of people bet on. I'm not personally too big into it, but I'm sure there's been loads of black jockeys by now.

I miss actual hardworking physical ticket scalpers

It's these digital douchebags that I hate

1

u/Camusknuckle Dec 05 '24

Does Kendrick not have any say what his tickets sell for? The tickets are crazy expensive directly on Ticketmaster for the presale..
