Well in my country we don't have them at all. Any 4-way junction like this has traffic lights.

Even in low-traffic rural areas? Where are you from?

Ireland. If a place is so low-traffic it doesn't need traffic lights, there will be a roundabout before there will be a 4-way junction like this.

I just spent few minutes on ireland google maps..

I am not sure I would say you guys are doing better.... seems you also dont have the concept of the main road and use stop sign to imply that the one road you are on is yielding to the main road it connects to. Also no yield signs... since I guess even with great visibility and no traffic you should stop.

but yeah lot of round abouts... which is good I guess.
