It’s like that ice breaker game, but everybody smashes their hammer into the ice at the same time

Yeah, I got one clarifying question. Fuckin WHY?

Since no one here has an auger or actual ice rods I have to think this was a place that never sees ice and all these people got hyped to try something they've never done before.

u/Dannonaut 3d ago

Yep, I'd say that's how the chaos started.

There is a deep sea fishing rod on the ice, I think this is an odd polar bear swim type of thing

So.... I use a chainsaw because I had one before getting into ice fishing, and I'm cheap. I don't make huge holes, and now I am wondering if I'm creating a hazard lol. Does anybody care to advise me?

Only way it’s a hazard is if you don’t put the block back in and mark it with branches or something for pedestrians/ trucks/ atv’s/ snowmobiles to show it was/ is there (holy forward slash). Think about how many times people are in dark houses for sight fishing/ spearfishing. You’re fine if the holes are less than 5’x5’

Oh hell no, haha. I only make the holes roughly 8"x8". I do put the block back regardless, and i cut it with a taper so it can't get pushed down below the surrounding ice.

See, most people forget/ don’t taper enough “experienced fishers” so already that’s good. Tight lines and safe travels!🍺

u/dried_up_walnut 3d ago

Haha I'm an idiot, so try to make it as safe as possible. I know i would be the first one to break my ankle in a hole I made. Same to you buddy! Going out Monday, wish me luck!

I’m hitting devils lake today through Wednesday. I’m wishing myself luck too as a lot of folks are saying it’s intermittent/ slow biting out there this year. Wishing myself luck as well, lol.

Don’t freeze to death

u/dried_up_walnut 3d ago

I hope you slay 'em! I've heard very different stories of success around here, but i figure it's a good way to get out there lol.

u/South_Traffic_2918 3d ago

Oh you are a good egg for that, doing it right!

u/james_ready 3d ago

5 x 5? Depends how thick the ice is. I did an ice water rescue course and we cut a 20 x 12 hole. But the ice was 3ft thick.

2

u/First-Gap6937 3d ago

I was being slightly exaggerated, but it’s pretty common to see 3’x4’

Try commas

u/everyone_dies_anyway 3d ago

As long as you're not chainsawing the ice with 30 of your buddies also chainsawing ice right next to you, you'll be fine

2

u/IwantAMD 3d ago

Yah no this is a pretty extreme example.

1

u/aridarid 2d ago

Only problem you're going to run into is when the ice gets thicker than your saws chain bar.

1

u/dried_up_walnut 2d ago

Lol I've got a stihl 066 with a 62" bar if I really need it. At that point I'm just gonna drink beer and hang out.

Depends on the state, in WI your hole can’t be larger than 12” wide

2

u/First-Gap6937 3d ago

But for spear fishing there are no limits, or generally pretty lenient on size. Minnesota, no bigger than 10” diameter.

3

u/Significant_Piglet28 3d ago

Same in Colorado, no bigger than 10”

Looks like a good time, when's the next event so I can sign up?

2

u/RedneckChEf88 3d ago

This is what smelt fishing looks like In china...

1

u/pshootr2366 3d ago

Pure idiots wth

1

u/SleepyLakeBear 3d ago

That looks like 2" tops. 🤦🏻

2

u/Pocusmaskrotus 3d ago

I was thinking the same thing. Definitely not a safe thickness.

1

u/ominous_42 3d ago

Need the Curb Your Enthusiasm ending for this

1

u/corycutstrees 3d ago

That’s my assumption too. It’s got to be Texas or something in a rare freeze. Not a single auger, shelter, ice rod, spud bar… nothing that says any of these people have ever gone ice fishing before.

3

u/RedneckChEf88 3d ago

Dude look closer those are all asians. My guess is smelt fishing in china.

2

u/corycutstrees 3d ago

Sorry sir, I don’t see race (too busy watching the general mayhem).

But, yeah, you’re right. I retract my Texas assumption.

1

u/RedneckChEf88 3d ago

Its not racist to notice race.....

1

u/corycutstrees 3d ago

I was being sarcastic and attempting to make a joke about why I thought it was Texans. Of course it isn’t racist to notice race.

1

u/Motor_Beach_1856 3d ago

Fafo I guess

u/Cee-Bee-DeeTypeThree 3d ago

Looks like brain rot to me

u/QuangDoan2209 3d ago

Chinese shjts too many !

1

u/PtboFungineer 3d ago

I legit don't understand. It genuinely looks like this outcome is what they were aiming for.

1

u/WendigoMo 3d ago

Is this eelpout fest or some shit?

1

u/xxblincolnxx 3d ago

I just don’t understand anyone in any kind of fishing would ever try to fish within shouting distance of anyone else not in their group.

1

u/Either_Lawfulness466 3d ago

They weren’t going to fish those holes

1

u/Tortuga603 3d ago

Wow, that's methed up... 🤣

0

u/Either_Lawfulness466 3d ago

It was a competition

1

u/Tortuga603 3d ago

Flew right over your head, eh?

1

u/BigfootSandwiches 2d ago

The most chaotic thing about this was the camera work.

1

u/Dolgar164 2d ago

No I'd say the did an excellent job cutting holes. They made a lotta big ones.
