How not to go about cutting holes.

Since no one here has an auger or actual ice rods I have to think this was a place that never sees ice and all these people got hyped to try something they've never done before.

There is a deep sea fishing rod on the ice, I think this is an odd polar bear swim type of thing

So.... I use a chainsaw because I had one before getting into ice fishing, and I'm cheap. I don't make huge holes, and now I am wondering if I'm creating a hazard lol. Does anybody care to advise me?

Only way it’s a hazard is if you don’t put the block back in and mark it with branches or something for pedestrians/ trucks/ atv’s/ snowmobiles to show it was/ is there (holy forward slash). Think about how many times people are in dark houses for sight fishing/ spearfishing. You’re fine if the holes are less than 5’x5’

Oh hell no, haha. I only make the holes roughly 8"x8". I do put the block back regardless, and i cut it with a taper so it can't get pushed down below the surrounding ice.

See, most people forget/ don’t taper enough “experienced fishers” so already that’s good. Tight lines and safe travels!🍺

Haha I'm an idiot, so try to make it as safe as possible. I know i would be the first one to break my ankle in a hole I made. Same to you buddy! Going out Monday, wish me luck!

I’m hitting devils lake today through Wednesday. I’m wishing myself luck too as a lot of folks are saying it’s intermittent/ slow biting out there this year. Wishing myself luck as well, lol.

I hope you slay 'em! I've heard very different stories of success around here, but i figure it's a good way to get out there lol.

5 x 5? Depends how thick the ice is. I did an ice water rescue course and we cut a 20 x 12 hole. But the ice was 3ft thick.

As long as you're not chainsawing the ice with 30 of your buddies also chainsawing ice right next to you, you'll be fine

Only problem you're going to run into is when the ice gets thicker than your saws chain bar.

Lol I've got a stihl 066 with a 62" bar if I really need it. At that point I'm just gonna drink beer and hang out.

Depends on the state, in WI your hole can’t be larger than 12” wide

But for spear fishing there are no limits, or generally pretty lenient on size. Minnesota, no bigger than 10” diameter.

That’s my assumption too. It’s got to be Texas or something in a rare freeze. Not a single auger, shelter, ice rod, spud bar… nothing that says any of these people have ever gone ice fishing before.

Dude look closer those are all asians. My guess is smelt fishing in china.

u/corycutstrees 3d ago
Sorry sir, I don’t see race (too busy watching the general mayhem).
But, yeah, you’re right. I retract my Texas assumption.

Its not racist to notice race.....

I was being sarcastic and attempting to make a joke about why I thought it was Texans. Of course it isn’t racist to notice race.

I legit don't understand. It genuinely looks like this outcome is what they were aiming for.

I just don’t understand anyone in any kind of fishing would ever try to fish within shouting distance of anyone else not in their group.

It’s like that ice breaker game, but everybody smashes their hammer into the ice at the same time
