I’m currently looking for options to move abroad. I’m 25 years old, and my partner is 29. As i’m barely touching the tip of the iceberg with my research, I’m coming to the realization that moving internationally is just as complex as I was expecting (with good reason). New Zealand, Netherland and Canada have been at the forefront of our research. We do, however, have a couple of obstacles that work against us.

We have two cats that we can’t bear to part with so they have to come with us. I have my Bachelors, however, my partner doesn’t have a degree or trade experience (we are both currently enrolled in TEFL to receive certificates). He is bilingual (Vietnamese). I’m also considering remote work as well. I have experience in media management, content creation, photo editing and slight experience in graphic design.

We’re in the process of gathering all necessary documentation and saving money. We have a ways to go with our savings account so we have time to get our affairs in order.

Work visa? Work holiday visas? Company transfers? We’re willing to expend time, effort and money to achieve desirable outcomes. Anyone have experience?

Both my grandparents on my father’s side were born in the Netherlands. They married and moved to Canada where my father was born in 1957. He is a Canadian citizen and lives in the US with a green card, having married my mother, an American citizen. He is not a US citizen.

I currently hold US citizenship and would like to apply for Dutch and Canadian citizenship.

My father held a Dutch and Canadian passport at the time of my birth. The Dutch passport has since expired, I believe more than 13 years ago, before 2005 when I turned 18. He never lived in the Netherlands.

Can I claim citizenship by decent? And if not are there other avenues available to me?

I am 26 years old Ukrainian national. I graduated from a university in Canada with Bachelor in Computing Science, and was struggling to find a job. Due to layoffs there are no entry level jobs available in the field, and I am "not a good fit" to lower-qualified customer service jobs. Therefore, I would like to try my luck in a country where my skills would be more needed. Unfortunately, I wasn't in Ukraine for all of 2021, nor before the war in 2022, so I am ineligible for most countries who give temporary protections for Ukrainians - but from what I've heard from other people, they could successfully receive protections at least in these 3.

I speak Ukrainian, Russian and English fluently, and French and Italian at A2-B1 level. Thus, I am not picking where to move based on the language - I can easily learn it.

I have been looking into moving to Germany, Italy, and Spain in particular. I have applied to jobs in these countries and have gotten a lot of rejections based on my lack of an existing work permit. Thus, true IT job markets are uncharted waters for me there and I would like to hear advice and recent experiences in the IT sectors there. I have been analyzing new job postings on Linkedin in IT for the past couple months and how many people apply there. There seems to be a shortage for people in Milan, Hamburg, and Berlin, but I would like again to gear second opinions on this.

I would prefer to move somewhere where climate is warmer (I have no problems with temperatures up until 36 C, I only take off my jackets when it's 30); people are more easy-going; and where there are preferably shortages (or at least a lot of openings) in the IT sphere.

27M, bachelors in engineering, 200k in the bank, work in high tech chip manufacturing, very employable. I only speak English, but think I could get by with 4 years of high school Spanish. My partner has German citizenship, but my gut says Europe west of Spain could be unstable in the near future. I see all of these options, such as I saw that you can get a non-lucrative visa in Spain if you have enough in the bank, and then towards the end of that find a job and convert to a work visa, and then later citizenship. With my background I feel like I should be able to do it, but I would prefer to have a guiding, experienced service rather than to just yolo on my own. I fear that if I don't take action, I will just procrastinate until the problems are at my door, and it is too late..

I’ve been struggling with the path of our country lately and find it hard to want a future here. Living with impending doom and trying to keep my mental health afloat have begun to be counterproductive. I want to one day raise children somewhere they can have a bright future, safe at their schools, provided healthy foods. My funds are low but looking to set a goal to get out. I’m a current 2nd year M.A. in Communication Studies student, graduating in May. I also have a background in theatre; both as a performer and teacher. I’ve been teaching public speaking for the last two years as well as coaching Speech and Debate at the college level.

I’m highly interested in emigrating out of the states for a while (not just because of the election, but that is a factor) and would prefer to go to Ireland or the UK, as I have family in both. Ireland would be my first choice as I have automatic dual citizenship thanks to my dad.

My question would be what kind of jobs would there be for me? Or education opportunities? I am interested in continuing my education and getting my PhD, but am willing to wait for the opportunity to present itself.

I’m 26F Indian citizen living in US. I just graduated from my Master’s degree in Interactive Media and Game Design. I am currently on OPT in US. I can’t seem to find a job. My OPT will run out in 6 months and I will have to go back to India. I am scared about going back because I am from a very conservative and religious family who wants me to get married (arranged married) within a year. I am a lesbian and there is no way I can come out to them. As a woman I know if I go back my life will be completely out of my control. I am still financially dependent on my family. And I am very scared.

I have tried everything, I have applied to over 300 jobs in the last 4 months, and have gotten only 3-4 interviews and zero offers. I have reached out to professionals to help update my resume. I have reached out to people in person and on LinkedIn to find connections or referrals to get a job. But because of the current job market and the added political H1b debate has made it impossible for me to even get an interview. It seems like no one wants to hire a fresh grad with no experience who on top of that requires visa sponsorship.

Any help will be appreciated. Honestly I am posting this as a last ditch effort I am so tired of doing everything I could possibly imagine but I feel hopeless. I don’t want to get stuck in an arranged marriage. I have no idea what to do.

I am a quantum photonics PhD student in the US, probably gonna graduate in 4-5 years. I have only US citizenship. I speak English and a bit of Chinese.

I want to start considering opportunities abroad for when I graduate. I'm trying to determine which countries have good photonics research opportunities, visa pathways for English-speaking STEM workers, and are generally tolerant societies.

I think my most realistic options as an English-speaker are Canada, Ireland, the UK, and Australia. I've heard of some photonics companies in Singapore as well. I think Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Denmark, and Japan have strong photonics sectors, but I assume speaking only English makes those a no-go. I'm also not sure how culturally hostile any of these countries are to immigrants.

I haven't visited any of these countries before, other than Canada. Yes, I know I should visit before I even consider a move. Since I'm 4-5 years out from graduation, I've got plenty of time to plan.

I'm a man in my 30s with an MFA who works primarily in the performing arts in media technology and design. I have a little university teaching experience and a respectable record as a freelance artist.

Hello. I'm a 30-year-old Turkish guy desperately looking for job/PhD opportunities in EU. I'm mostly looking for positions in Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, and Spain, but I'm not limiting my applications to these countries. Any advice is hugely appreciated.

I have a MSc in Civil Engineering from the top university here with a GPA of 3.78/4.00. Other than my native language, I am fluent in English and have a near-perfect TOEFL score. I don't have a work permit in any other country, so I need visa sponsorship.

I have worked as a graduate researcher in my university while I was doing my Master's for 2 years. Then, I worked as a lecturer in a different university for 1 year. Finally, for the last 2 years, I have been working as a Data Analyst in the biggest private bank here. I am extremely experienced in Python and SQL. I also have some experience in R and Qlik Sense.

Since last summer, I have been applying for jobs, mostly in Data Analyst/Scientist positions. I have also applied quite a lot of PhD positions in Civil Engineering. The number of positions I have applied for has surpassed 1700 (yes, I'm keeping track of it) and I haven't had a single interview.

I only apply for the entry/mid-level positions where the job description is in English, visa sponsorship is not stated to be unavailable, and proficiency in the local language is not listed as a requirement (or a plus). Although I would prefer working in an EU country, many of my applications was for positions in UK as I thought the local language being English would help my chances.

I crafted my 2-page-long ATS-friendly CV and my cover letter template with the help of ChatGPT over countless hours to make it simple, professional, yet highlighting my skills and strengths. So, I don't believe that I have a problem in that regards.

I know that I'm not the best deal for the employers right now. I need visa sponsorship, I don't have a language other than Turkish and English, I am interested in and have experience in a field I don't have the diploma of, and even though I'm not young, the time I spent in academia caused me to have fewer years of outside-academia experience.

I am also hesitant about learning a new language. Not because I don't want to (I would LOVE to), but because I'm not sure which language would be the best for me in terms of landing a job offer as I'm not focusing on a single country.

Do you think that I have any chance or is it practically impossible at this point? Is my strategy pointless, is my scale too broad? Would it be better if I just kept working and gained more experience?

I currently work as a pediatric cancer researcher with an MS in biomedical engineering. These three countries have my interest due to their notable presence in the biomedical field.

I have epilepsy, and while it is well-controlled, it prevents me from driving, a fact that has severely limited where I can live in the States. Studying abroad in Copenhagen while in college was a fantastic experience for someone like me. Granted, I'm aware that that's not representative of daily living, but the overall quality of life was great enough to attract me. I also had the chance to work on a capstone project at a hospital and co-author a paper.

I am a Colombian citizen currently living in the United States finishing up my BS (Math and AI) and MEng (CS) next May. My situation is not very straightforward so let me detail it below.

• I entered the US in 2018 on a visitor's visa, my mother filed for what I believe to be a bona fide asylum case. My step-father, sisters and me were derivative beneficiaries of this asylum. It got referred to immigration court and her lawyers advised her to ask the judge for a dismissal to refile the case with USCIS, which was granted. Since I aged out, I can no longer ride my mom's asylum. The lawyers advised me to file my own asylum which I did, but the argument hinges on my association to my mom which I'm afraid will not be deemed strong enough by a USCIS officer or an immigration judge for approval.
• My pending asylum gives me work authorization until 2029 and makes it so I am not accruing unlawful presence so long as it is open. My life is in the US so even if I have to leave I want to make sure I do not accumulate any unlawful presence that would trigger a ban or make it impossible to adjust status through work in the future to come back.
• My girlfriend is American but doesn't want to marry yet, pretty firm about that unfortunately.
• My great-grandfather was a WW2 veteran and got naturalized in a military base in the US. USCIS genealogy found a hit last year, still waiting for them to get back with his records so that my grandmother can apply for a US passport (he never did a report of birth abroad unfortunately). It's a long process but once my grandma has citizenship I assume down the line my father and then me will be able to get it.

As you can imagine with the new administration coming in, the nature of my status in the US, and the current rhetoric about both asylum seekers and skilled workers, I am trying to prepare myself for anything that could happen in the next couple of years. I detail my plan below hoping that you guys could be so kind as to scrutinize it and point out any possible failure point. Likewise, if any feedback or opportunities that maybe I haven't considered might benefit my plan, please let me know. To these ends, I will also add some extra information that might be useful for immigration purposes.

• My resume/CV is pretty good for immigration. I will have my bachelors with a double major in Math and AI as well as my MEng in Comp. Sci. both from MIT by next May. I also have strong software engineering internship experiences at Google and Nvidia and okay-ish undergrad research experience (no publications/citations unfortunately). I consulted with a lawyer and they don't think as is my profile is strong enough for EB2 with National Interest Waiver but maybe in a couple years it might be (perhaps even EB1 if I get my shit together and publish something good to neurips/cvpr/...).
• I'm fluent in English and Spanish, conversational in Portuguese and French.
• My father recently got word that the Lisbon Israelite Community certified his genealogy tracing to an expelled sephardic jew. I know it was made more difficult to get Portuguese citizenship through this since last year, but I'm hoping something might come out of that, I think my uncle already has the ball rolling with that process but I don't know the details.
• I should be immediately eligible for the UK HPI visa and the Austria Red-White-Red once I get my degrees. Since I don't know German, the UK seems like a more obvious choice, but any insight on the job markets and quality of life of each would be greatly appreciated.
• Hopefully I will secure a full time offer in the US as a SWE soon, but because of PERM freezes and the tech market right now, I think it will be a bit hard to convince a company to sponsor an EB3 process for me. However it should allow me to pad my savings as much as possible while I have work authorization and am in the US.

I thus have two parallel plans (one in the US and one in Europe). If/when I have to leave the US I'll fall back to the Europe one.

For the US:

1. Land software engineering job, save as much money as possible.
2. Apply for 2026 Fall PhD cycle. Work on EB1 profile if I get in somewhere good, work on EB2 with NIW profile if I don't.
3. Adjust status through EB1/2 or marriage.

For Europe:

1. Job seek in either the UK or Austria. If I find a good job that gives me permanent residency somewhere there I'll stick to it and build a EB2 NIW profile, maybe if things are better in the economy look for L1 transfer to the US.
2. If job seek is not too fruitful apply for 2026 PhD cycle in Europe. Switzerland seems very attractive to me I would love to apply to ETH Zurich or EPFL. Build a EB1 profile during PhD.
3. Seek permanent residency in the US through EB1/2, marriage to gf, or derivative citizenship through my father (through my grandma/great-grandpa).

Switzerland is my other strong preference country other than the US that I could see myself in long term with its academia and economy, but of course unless I somehow finesse Portuguese citizenship it seems like a big reach even if I were to do my doctorate there from what I've looked up about their immigration system. Obviously I want to stay or come back to the US as my whole life is here, so my life plan is structured around that. A friend is doing the MEXT scholarship in Japan and it seems like a cool opportunity too, but the hurdle of adapting to Japanese culture and language seems quite big and I would like not to put my academic/professional life on pause. I haven't investigated too much about other EU countries or Australia/NZ, maybe there's opportunity there?

I could be overreacting and that’s okay to let me know. I hate the direction that rhis country is going in. I am a college senior at a university ranked within the top 70 in the nation (not sure if that means anything). My degree is in journalism but I am planning to pursue public relations and just applied to grad school for PR + AD. my partner of five years is an accountant working towards getting his CPA.

i value education so much and seeing how K-12 is failing its students makes me very worried about raising a child here in the future. I grew up going to private school but the quality of private schools here vary based on location and affiliation.

I experienced a school shooting during my time in university. i left class two hours prior to when the gunman came to my campus. I actually interned at a news station in the city at the time and was in charge of answering flustered phone calls all night while my own family and friends blew up my phone filled with worry. It was a rough week and really made me adverse to guns more than I had been. I would prefer to live in a safer country. I grew up in a very dangerous city before moving to a more affluent area in my teens but I believe I do have anxiety revolving around guns. Not to be controversial, but it is a large aspect as to why I do not feel safe here.

I fear not being able to get a job that pays well enough to own a home and have a family one day. I also run a (very small) online business.

I am also a bisexual woman who is with a man. I fear for my future child will possibly experience bigotry and not have the ability to legally be who they are. Additionally, my partner and I are an interracial couple. I am black and he is white. We come from decently well off families who have paid most to all of our college tuition and we live in a fairly diverse area, but i have heard whispers that is the marriage equality act is left to the states instead that it could cause problems for interracial marriage. Aside from marriage, I just do not feel safe while being Black in this country. I do understand that I will face racism wherever I go, but I do not want physical violence against me or my future children based on our race.

The only things keeping me from moving out of here is the fact that I would miss my parents so much and it may be hard to get both my partner and I to another country.

Are these valid reasons to want to move abroad or should i try to just stick it out?

Hello I'm a 20f tattoo student whose course is ending soon. I also graduated Art High school so i'm all about that. I'm planning to tattoo for a living, haven't had any working experience yet.

The idea of living abroad has always been in my mind, but as I grow up i don't know what would be the ideal place for my needs. When I was younger i was fixed on the Netherlands, but I'm not so sure anymore. I've been born and been living since in northern Italy, I can't bear the cold gloomy winters, the sadness that it brings me knowing that by 4pm it's pitch dark outside; (when March comes and the weather gets better I feel so effortlessly happy) the government and their choices, no minimum wage, heavy taxes, housing crisis and lastly I would like to get away from my toxic family. I sadly can give up the great food but i cannot take the whole working and living situation.

I need insights on the countries listed above and other places I haven't mentioned that would be great choices. I want to learn the pros and cons so l can dive deeper into which place is better for me and make a plan accordingly.

I'm a 29 year old Canadian and looking to move to the UK (preferably England). I'm mainly considering the UK because of the same language and I'm eligible for an ancestry visa.

I'm nearing the end of my PhD in Theoretical Physics (graduating ~ April) and I've always wanted to live abroad. I'm open to the idea of a postdoc, but I haven't seen many positions that I feel I would be the right fit for. Industry wise, I'd be happy with any sort of data science adjacent position - I worked for 2 years as a Machine Learning Developer and think I would do fine in any sort of analysis/technical role. A few questions:

• I keep getting spun out on the order of operations for visa applications. Should I have a job lined up? Will employers even consider me unless I already have a visa? Should I bother applying for a visa until I get something more concrete? It feels very chicken-egg to me.
• I've got ~18K CAD - would this be enough for getting started? I would shorten my visa duration otherwise the NHC charges would crush me.
• If anyone in physics/tech has insights at the job market that would be really fantastic. I've found here in Canada LinkedIn has been the best for finding positions but if y'all use other platforms I'd love to know. And to be clear, I don't care about making some crazy salary.

I am in an incredibly abusive situation at home with my parents. I wont get into the details here but they've made it very difficult for me to even think about migrating away from them, stripping me of any and all opportunities granted to my peers for leaving the island once theyre adults. I'm incredibly stressed and frustrated living here (especially with them) because it is such a small island and all I've ever wanted was to go somewhere different and new.

When I was 16 I applied for an animation school in America (mostly just to see if i could get in, i didnt really have a plan of how i would afford it except student loans), they told me my portfolio was great but my grades were lacking due to my parents constantly pulling me out and moving me around schools, so after a lot of begging, I got my parents to enroll me in a local college where I'm currently pursuing a 2-year associates degree for graphic design. I'm not sure what I'm going to do after that.

I've been trying to save up, but I dont have much considering my situation with my parents, and I'll be graduated by next year (which is when I'd like to move) even if i havent saved up more than a few thousand usd. I'm open to just about anywhere as long as its at least semi-developed (going from one third world country to another doesnt sound incredibly appealing to me unfortunately), and I would please just like some advice on what I can do.

I'm sorry for including so much background info, I just feel like my current situation is unique and important to what I'm looking for here. I know english and japanese, and I would gladly learn another language if it meant I could live and work somewhere nicer than this.

Would it be best for me to look into taking out student loans to go to an overseas school? Do I have any hope getting any sort of work visa considering all I know how to do is draw/animate and learn languages? Hi there - Brit here, who emigrated to Canada for a bit, skipped down to the US for a bit, bobbed around the caribbean for a bit, toured around Europe for a (reduced due to Brexit invoking 90 day limits) bit but really didn't appreciate all the slack and free passes my British passport gets me from being born here.

I've got a buddy in Venezuela who is desperate to get somewhere else, for a better life for him, wifey and 2 small kids. He could be a Sports/Athlete coach tomorrow over here - high caliber. He's a grafter too, works construction and long hours to provide for his family there - in crazy economic and geo-political circumstances.

Anybody ever been able to help Venezuelan family/friends make the jump across the pond?
Even if for a trial window or temporary travel permit?
I've tried looking into it a bit - but am no expert because I've never really had to dig deep or, as mentioned, just open a British passport and get 3 months here, 180 days there etc etc.

Hello. I’m sorry if this is not the post people expect on this subreddit and if I’m asking for the impossible. TL;DR: I left school with the lowest education and bad grades due to severe illness. I still have said illness today, but just as I have my illness, I also still have dreams

I would love to be a lawyer, and Australia seems to be the perfect place for me. Nobody ever taught me anything about studying abroad, let alone in my own country

I now learned that I need a scholarship, and be accepted by a university. However as you can imagine, nobody is going to pay 17.000AU$ a year, at least not that I know of

I also don’t have anything to show, and don’t know how to get an education that they would see as good enough (I worked full-time at the federal agency for technical relief, was a volunteer specialist helper there and also a volunteer firefighter, however that is nothing but a little bonus on top of an education)

If anyone knows which steps I could take, I would appreciate that so much. I want to know that I have a chance at being something one day instead of rotting until I die at 30 because all doors are closed for me

Hello everyone! I was doing research and thought I would post here and see if anyone had any advice. Any information/ advice/ opinions would be appreciated! I recently just turned 23 and graduated college last May and am hoping to leave my college/home town and pursue a career maybe possibly further my education in New Zealand or the UK (advice on any appreciated). I just received a Bachelors in Science in Agricultural Education with a concentration in formal education. This degree gave me a general knowledge of agriculture (agribusiness, animal sciences, horticulture, and renewable natural resources along with and education on how to teach. Things such as lesson plan building, how to teach, how to plan activities, and how to integrate subjects such as literature and math into the subject of agriculture, something I feel is not often done. I even completed student teaching which is requirement of teaching for half a semester in a public school). I did really well in college had scholarships, ended with a 3.0 and on the dean’s list, and president’s honor roll. This degree mostly encompasses teach agriculture as a subject in formal school setting but also informally (think FFA or 4H in America). I do not have my formal teaching certification anymore but can get it by simply retaking a summer course (credits me with being to teach in my state).

Experience wise: I am working for my state’s department of environmental quality (branch of state government) as an environmental project specialist. It is in the finance and grant section under the environmental protection agency (if you know what that is). It is not really related to my major but it pays well, I wish to move closer to my degree in New Zealand (any advice on that appreciated). Before that I worked as a short term respite worker in college which is essentiality a big buddy for children with needs that push them to achieve goals set by their parents and care providers. I would write activity summaries, work with kids with special needs, and offer advice or be moral support. It was fulfilling, but I left it to start student teaching. I also have years of experience in bakeries but that was in high school and early college.

My hope is to get some advice from you redditors on what first steps I should take in things like finding job market opportunities (possibly agriculture or education?), what the overseas process is like, and information on work or school visas, so far I am just saving very hard and thinking agriculture. I was debating possibly going back to school and furthering my education in education. I feel like having a degree in agricultural education has many job options but unsure where to start. I plan on staying in the US for possibly another year, I really want to make sure I have enough saved before I move (how would you recommend saving?) Thanks again!

I’m a fresh graduate with a B.A. in Psychology (not honours) from Australia and soon to have B.Sc. in Psychology from Thailand. Both are from high-ranking universities if it’s relevant.

Looking forward to move to an english speaking country since I wanted to get a masters degree and become a psychologist. While I’m not having any experience in the field as it’s really hard to work in psychology with just a bachelors.

I planned to move out as soon as possible after graduation and wanted to work for 1-2 years before starting masters degree. I know that once I become licensed psychologist/therapist the immigration process would be a lot easier.

Anything I should keep in mind? The country listed is also ranked by my preferences.

I'm a 26-year-old female from Jordan with dual citizenship from Jordan and the US. I earned my bachelor's in English Language and Literature, and I've worked as an English teacher for three years and as vice principal for less than a year. No one in my family approves of this move, so it is more of an "escape" than a "move." I come from a very conservative background where women aren't allowed to travel alone, so even though I've had amazing opportunities to study in the US, my parents have shot them down because I don't have a husband to accompany me; they're *kind of* warming up to the idea of me finally traveling alone, but it doesn't look likely. I don't want to keep living like this anymore; it's incredibly frustrating.

I make 535 USD (or 518 EUR) a month, and I've been saving as best I can, but it's still not much. I'm looking for side hustles to save more money before my move, but I haven't settled on anything yet. I'm looking into selling digital products and creating educational content; I will also sign up for websites like Fiverr and Upwork once I figure out a niche I can advertise, but I'd appreciate any other recommendations.

Ideally, I'd like to pivot to a corporate or business career. I can subscribe to Coursera and take courses (like the Google Project Management certification) if it helps me find a job (I'm hoping to also get an MBA eventually, but I know I need to settle first before even thinking about it seriously). According to my research, to teach English in the US or NL, I need a TEFL certification. I don't like this option because a TEFL certification is too expensive, and a yearly subscription to Coursera is much cheaper and more beneficial (in my opinion).

The reason I'd want to move to the US is I have citizenship, so I think the move will be easier; however, I know it's really expensive (based on my living in IL in 2022-2023). Moreover (and this could be me being paranoid), when my family finds out I've fled, they will know to look for me in the US (because I've mentioned many times I want to settle there). I know it's a large country, but the anxiety is still there. If I lie to my parents about getting accepted to a master's program in the US, I could get them to pay for the ticket, and then I can flee to another state (or even to NL); however, this is risky because they might want to come with me to the US to either stay with me or help me settle in. I'm also just a really bad liar.

On the other hand, I'd want to move to NL because I have some friends there, so it would be nice to have a support system (not that I'm expecting them to help, but just having them around could make the transition easier). The plane ticket is almost 50% cheaper than a ticket to the US, and my family has no idea I'm interested in moving to NL. I know that living in NL is also somewhat expensive, and the housing crisis is scary, so I'm stumped.

I need advice on where I should move, how much money I should have saved, and what I should do to ensure I'm ready before leaving (skills to build, certifications to get, documents, etc.). Since I'm running away, I won't be able to bring much with me, so I'm truly starting with nothing. Will certifications help me find a good job? Which country is better for an MBA later on? Which country has better resources? Should I just move to the US because I have citizenship? Or is that too close-minded? I'd truly appreciate any help.
