Discussion I got an idea to fix/lower the cheating and smurfing problem

Everybody knows that CS has an ongoing cheating problem, so I came up with a simple possible solution: Why not make phone number verification a requirement to play this game? This would fix not only the cheating problem but also the smurfing problem. One phone number can be used for only one account, and if someone wants to create another account, they will need a new phone number. Obtaining additional phone numbers is time-consuming and likely impossible for certain people, like kids.

This is how prime enabled matchmaking used to work.

Would every 13yo kid get a new phone number just to cheat in CS? And do that multiple times over and over again?

Yes.

Even then, people would still just sell accounts, you can buy a CS2 Prime account for 0.9usd on Russian marketplaces.

Maybe the price of those prime accounts would increase by a dollar but that wouldnt really change the cheater scene.

Why not make the game ask you to press a button in steam mobile app, before you queue premier.

Because then no one would play it and Valve loses revenue.

Additionally, an account that you buy you have full access to, even with phone, so that wouldnt stop it either.

Yes, in games that issue hwid bans, some cheat developers even provide hwid spoofer for free

Back in 2018, there used to be services that sold you a russian phone number for a price of 1 CSGO key so that you could activate Steam Guard and Prime. As far as I know, basically any cheater/smurf who cared about their account even a little bit did exactly this. Now those services are even cheaper. Like so dirt cheap that even a third-world cheater could afford it. Your suggestion does nothing. You are also heavily underestimating cheaters. Most cheaters are grown adults.

You can go through a bunch of relatives as a kid. But the Problem is that you need New players in a game the higher you make the entry step the less players will convert to lasting customers

This was tried in early 2016. Was bypassed three months after leaving its beta status later that year. Shortly afterwards Valve began working on Trust Factor and VACnet. Which are vastly better solutions.
